So got a bit crafty and made up a template off the old dash, cut the holes close to size and then eased them out with a dremel (the best tool for a shit tradesman) and test fitted until they were a snug fit. So it has solved the problem of the shabby cracked dash in the car and the redundant heater controls (heated screen, and shed some weight.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So some guys on a multi denominational forum pointed me in this direction. Thought I might share a bit of my entry onto the world of Porsche. Have had a varied history of performance road, track and tarmac rally cars but thought given i had sketched 911 silhouettes on my school books, it was time I found out what 911's were all about. I really wasn't interested in anything collectible (original Australian delivered, low mileage, matching no's etc) as I wanted to feel free to modify it and put plenty of kms on it. So I popped a post on scumtree looking for  a hotrod style 911 coupe. Among a few responses something popped up that fitted the bill. Australian delivered RHD 74 911S that had been turned into a bit of a 964 RSR clone. Wide bodied, 964 3.6 engine with full rebuild, big red brakes, konis, torsion bars, sway bars. roll cage etc etc. Was a solid starting point with much of the work done. Was a comprehensive build completed by T and D in Brisbane in 2010. Current pic of the car below. Plans are to shed some weight from it via fibreglass panels and a few other strategies and add a little HP via some independent throttle bodies with a MoTeC ECU for the tune which should complement the RS cams and fabspeed exhaust already in it. Have got the Jenveys and have a local CNC company working on some adaptors similar to the Rothsport Kit to adapt the 964 intake plenum. Might try to set up the air filter as per a recent singer image (sans the hollywood bling finish ) I spotted and fit an oval filter between the plenums. Might be a bit of a challenge with the resonance flap on the 964 plenum. Also some wheels to fill the guards a bit with better rubber selecction than the 17's on it. Don't like the full Rauh Welt stuff in its entirety, I reckon its a bit over the top, but I do like the JDM wheels. So I have some 18 x 9 and 18 x 11 SSR Professor SP1 on the way. And will finish off by making the cockpit a little more ergonimic. Just installed a momo wheel with 70mm offset to bring it closer and have a WEVO shifter in the race length coming. Also keen to tidy up the dash. Dash pad is suffering the usual cracking. Probably go for something in fibreglass to shed some weight and cover it in alcantara. The rest of the interior is quite good with race seats, lightweight carpet and colour coded full CAMS roll cage with bolt out side intrusion. Would be happy with this kind of look, sans the OTT rear wing and canards and splitter, and maybe not quite so "hella flush" as it will be a track car so needs to have workable clearance.

POST 6Original post

Welcome. im looking forward to seeing the car with new wheels

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the positive feedback fellas. JV don't think I haven't looked long and hard at those images. It's a thing of beauty. If we can get it remotely as tidy as that I will be very happy. Oz, nice to see another pic. Has been through one other hand since it was built. Original builder did some time in the big house and sold it prior to going inside. I think he acquired his funds via questionable means. the second owner was a really nice fella in Brisbane who did the odd Lakeside track day in it and that was about it. Is great being back playing with a car that is supported by such a wealth of online information and aftermarket parts vendors. Seems there are generally several aftermarket options for any perceived shortfall. Pretty easy to lighten the wallet

POST 20Original post

You need to see the exhaust pics to know just how cool it was..

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A little bit happening. It's been on the rollers for an indicative "before" number and kicked out 234 HP at the wheels. Thought it would be good to get some objective idea on what was actually gained by doing the itb's and tune. Am just waiting for the CNC guys to have a few spares hours on their mill to punch out the adaptors and the ITB install can begin.

POST 23Original post

Solid starting point They ITBs will give incredible throttle response and the Motec will allow some really fine tuning and make the most of the package.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So had a bit on my plate of late so the car has been in the background. But some parts have arrived so time to get back into it. So far we have carbon door bodies (2.9kg) carbon bonnet (4.2kg) and some fibreglass turbo front guards to replace the current steel guards with fibreglass extensions. (3.1kg) Really happy with the quality of the carbon. Is a shame to have to paint it. So on the weight saving thus far we have shaved out 20kg with the lithium battery and 11kg with the bonnet. Will get cracking on the doors and guards next week. Internet tells me a stock door weighs 15kg. so a 12kg per door saving there. So thats 55kg thus far. Maybe 5kg in each front guard?   Was hoping for something close to 100kg total weight loss but seems I will fall well short. Might go a bit further with lexan to the rear window and quarters. Still want winding glass for drivers doors. The ITB adaptors are due early next week so that will be the next job. Have also been offered a trial run of the newish MoTeC M1 so will probably give that a run as recent experience says they give better driveability. Wheels should be here in a couple of weeks. R comps are ordered (295 rear 235 front.) So its all starting to come together. Stock Bonnet Carbon Bonnet Carbon Door Quick test fit of bonnet Carbon door bodies

POST 25Original post

those doors look amazing. would love to do that! for reference, the IROC car being built at DHM will be around 1050kg's with full cage, CF doors/wing/fenders, lexan rear window etc,

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^^^ Wow. I am dreaming thinking of getting under 1000kg. Those things are only a single seat etc and would be going further than I plan to with the strip out. (no carpet, stripped loom, lexan windows etc. ) Got a little bit done today. RH guard off and glass guard dropped into place. Glass guard is 6kg lighter than the steel/fibreglass composite. Fit of the glass piece looks really good. Removed the drivers door as well and stripped it back to a bare shell. Weighed in at 16kg so will be a 13kg saving on each door at least. Not looking forward to dressing the carbon shell back up. No holes for anything to bolt back up. Need to make sure I am feeling patient when I tackle that one. So looks like lightweight parts alone will strip 70kg out of it. Will also be using lightweight fixings on non structural stuff. Have also pulled out things like the gas struts on the front bonnet hinges. Completely redundant with the carbon bonnet. Will just sort a little locking device for one hinge to prop it open. Hopefully keep chipping away at it this week.

POST 27Original post

yeah i've seen longhoods down to 940kg, but later cars are heavier and once you add in the cage etc..

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So had a bit of time and was feeling patient so attacked dressing one of the doors. I have always hated messing around with window winders and door mechanisms. But actually it all went better than expected. A dremel is your best friend in these situations. I was a bit concerned about how robust the door carcass would be given its so light, but once everything is nipped up its remarkably solid and the fit is spot on. Was a bit concerned about the weight and fitment of the aero mirrors. The way they mount is fine in steel, but I think with any sort of knock, they would pull clean out of the carbon. Have sourced some 935 spec aero mirrors that fit up to the front quarter window so that should sort that. Stan at Performance 9 in QLD is a pretty helpful guy for this era porka and is doing an excellent job of trying to lighten my wallet. S from here its a bit more work to fit the front guard up, panel gap between door and guard is a bit off currently but am hoping some tweaking will sort it. Then rinse and repeat on the passenger side and off for paint.

POST 29Original post

Aaaah door to panel gaps. Gotta love 'em.....NOT! An issue I have to address eventually. Looking good anyway mate

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I think we will have to fill the edge of the guard that butts up to the door. The rest of the gaps on the door are fine, as are the other gaps on the guard. I think their template must be a bit off for the trim line on that edge. So seems it is starting to gain momentum. Put some more time into it yesterday and finished the passenger side so its ready to roll out of the shed. Still waiting on a duck tail and 935 mirrors to arrive from QLD so rather than waste time will get cracking with the mech side of things. Will run it up to Racing Dynamics Monday and get started on the ITB install and the MoTeC. Picked up the ITB adapters today. The fellas have done a great job and they are a thing of beauty IMHO Am really happy with them. Glen at Autosport Electromics has offered a trial of a MoTeC M1 so might give that a run. Apparently much better driveability than the previous generation.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dropped the car off to Racing Dynamics today to allow the pro's to sort the ITB install. When we were discussing the intake and how I would like it to work, he just happened to have a 996 cup car intake lying around not being used. "You mean something like this??"  I really hope we can find a way to make it work in with the install.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So as i have a habit of doing....the project is escalating... Was looking at the dash and going gees those old heater controls are look rough and are largely redundant. It just runs a heater blower to the screen and thats it. Hmmm.... Can you get a heated screen for these? Turns out you can. So one of them is on the way, and all the blower motor and snot in front of the firewall under the bonnet is headed for the bin. I figure given its not a daily, if its too hot, roll down a window or stop and have a cold beer. If its too cold, wear warmer clothes . Really just need to be able to clear the screen when cold and wet. So from there the next obvious step was to pull the dash out and get all the pads covered in black alcantara (ordered some online) with red stitching. Then just get a custom ali (anodised black) or carbon plate made up for where the heater controls are and put custom switches in for the remaining controls. These guys have some pretty trick stuff. http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/u...inium-switches Got stuck in to pulling out all the heater box and associated snot today. Is actually pretty light so not much weight saved. About 5kg in all. Just a few block off plates to knock up now to seal off all the redundant holes. The ITB assembly is coming along however we discovered Jenvey failed to send some very important rose jointed linkages for the ends of the main bar that joins the two banks of three together. To their credit they didnt question the omission and have some on their way. Heated screen hasnt arrived yet, and the trimmer I want to do the dash is fingered until after Christmas so will hold off on all the dash/screen work and just get the ITBs and ECU sorted and get it all painted and back on the road. The screen swap and dash refurb can be its own separate project. Keen to get this car driveable again. part way into heater demo All Out Shit pile ITB and plenum

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 138249

What specs are those babies?

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So , I took a punt and had the rubber fitted. I was a bit concerned I got greedy on the offset and might have created a rubbing issue on the outer. Was sweating on it last night a bit. Fitted them up and once it was on the ground and its camber came into effect they are spot on. Jumped up and down on both ends and no clearance issues. Work to be done on the ride height as the front has come up due to weight loss measures and the rear is up a little due to gear being out of the engine bay and maybe being in the air for a couple of weeks. But overall I couldn't be happier. Specs are 18 X 11 rear with -32 offset  18 X 9 front -7.  The wheel is an SSR Professor SP1. Custom build ordered via Import Monster. Very happy with their service.

POST 40Original post

Bloody awesome mate!! Looks the biz. Where did you get youre carbon panels from? Is painting this an issue? love this thread!! cheers

POST 41Original post

Looking good! If it's not too late, and you haven't done it already, I would highly recommend that you do some seam welding. I know you are fitting a full cage, but based on other similar cars I know in Europe, it will still make a significant difference. The original 964 RS's and RSR's were all seam welded, as were the Cup and SuperCup cars. Although I cannot remember exactly where, there are online sources that you should be able to get the details of what was done. I would also be fitting the solid top mounts for the suspension, front and back. It might seem like a bit of work and expense, but with the type of tyres you are running, I suspect they will get chewed to pieces in no time if you don't and the car will behave far better.

POST 42Original post

coming along very nicely... great choice of wheel too, really suits the red

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 138839

Cheers. Carbon came from noosacat Aka Hennig Motorsport in QLD. It's a bit of a shame to paint it but won't be a problem. Cheers re the wheels. Was pleasantly surprised at how well they went with the red. Better than expected. And cheers re body prep. Car is already caged. But will need to add one bar to get full cams certification as the goal posts have moved slightly from when it was installed and sadly they didn't certify it at the time. Will also look to do some bracing around the front towers as I have sourced some coilovers so will look to go down that path for suspension. Will definitely looking to add solid mounts. Thanks for the tip It won't be short on rubber and corner grip so will need to make sure things aren't flexing too much.

POST 44Original post

Nice one! Was looking at ordering those same wheels ! Did you measure up for maximum dish? I assume those are turbo fender widths front and rear?

I am interested in ITB set up that could look like this. Clean and almost looks like  old school carb's. There seems to be a few alternatives, PMO ect ( big bucks ) who is doing air cooled set ups here in Aus, apart from Autohouse ?

POST 48Original post

Quotes source post: 140237

jenvey.. any decent workshop can fit them the OBX stuff is apparently junk really any ITB setup can look like that if you put the trumpets/mesh on it! i'll be going down the same route as the OP as soon as funds allow

POST 49 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^^^^ As above. Jenvey do a complete bolt on kit with trumpets exactly as per your pic. Would be very plug and play and you can't beat Jenvey quality. (Would be some ECU challenges) I was keen for the torque drivability benefits of the full plenum setup. The trumpet setup is very top end focussed.

Thanks for the interest fellas. Has been steadily moving forward. Had one minor curve ball with the ITB's. Had overlooked the very obvious fact the brakes needed vacuum. Are far less vacuum pipe opportunities with this setup than the factory manifold/intake. Decided to do away with the booster and go with one of the twin master cylinder kits with brake bias adjuster. (PR Tech) Should be a better solution in the long term. Also had a bit of an impulse buy on these "Singer Style" headlights. Full headlight kit with HID a guy in Canada is making from scratch. Plan to be driving at night and doing night time rally sprint. Factory lights are woeful, so hoping these improve things. And dont think they look too bad either. All of the MoTeC and ITB work is complete and it is finished on the dyno. I dropped it off for paint yesterday. So hopefully in 2-3 weeks it should be all the same colour and just need some final trim and tweaks and its good to go. Added a few HP with new exhaust tips. The original ones looked a bit naff IMHO. Old pipes. New pipes. Engine bay all together with cup filter. Still needs a proper detail to clean it up. And the results of the dyno??? Picked up 20odd HP atw so 250 odd now. NA is hard work. That would normally be 1 or 2 psi of boost Only took it for a quick squirt from the workshop to the paint shop, but driveability is transformed. Starts perfectly, idles perfectly. No stalling issues. It has light weight flywheel and RS cams so did do the odd stall or hunt at idle when you lifted off abruptly on the stock ECU. Throttle response is epic. Stabs of the throttle from idle are so crisp. Blips on downshifts now are spot on. Were very vague before. Sometimes get a little throttle, other times a big blip. Pulls off the line much more cleanly and transient throttle is much crisper. So a combination of benefits of a custom tune and the ITB's. But very happy with the end result as you feel much more connected to the engine via the accelerator pedal.....oh, and it sounds tits!!!!!! So with any luck, 2-3 weeks of paint and then get stuck into final assembly and arsing around with trims etc and it is good to go.

POST 54Original post

good result all the same, yeah not the same as dialling in more boost haha. keen to follow suit

POST 56Original post

Agree that the original lights are woeful and I've tried various solutions - none that I could recommend.  So I am interested in the Singer style lights you've found and would very much appreciate the contact details if you don't mind.

^^^^^ No probs. Here is a discussion on Rennlist. http://rennlist.com/forums/parts-marketplace/881235-singer-style-headlights.html And here is his email addy. [email removed] Francois Ouzilleau Was very easy to deal with. Will be a few weeks until I can personally report on their performance. Although Hepkat63 (Stephen) had them fitted to his car.

POST 58Original post

I have read up a bit on these headlights on Pelican etc. They are reasonably cheap to do. You can get the HID units from eBay for about $100, and the clear lenses are a VW item which I found is cheapest from a local VW parts supplier. Then you just replace your current H4 bulb with the HID unit and your done for under $200 (as long as you already have H4 headlights). For me with sugar scoops it is a bit more of a pain.

POST 59 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^ Sounds like a very well priced option. How do they go trimming off the beam (low beam) so you don't dazzle all oncoming traffic? These have a projector insert in them so they trim the top beam off and focus the light. Its a pet hate of mine (4wd brigade seem to be the biggest culprits) who do HID upgrades to regular reflector headlights which end up throwing out  a big ball of light in all directions. Pretty off putting coming the opposite direction at night. I must be getting old

The HID unit fits into the standard reflector housing, so you have the same adjustment as you had before. Very simple really. I decided I preferred the look of the regular fluted headlights, so I have ordered them new. But I have seem guys have put the same HID units behind the fluted lenses as well. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2X-MINI-2-5-HID-BI-XENON-PROJECTOR-LENS-KIT-HID-HEADLIGHT-SHROUD-H1-H4-H7-RHD-/171976059219?hash=item280a926953:g:HC8AAOSwl9BWKGE6

POST 62 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^ got it. That's a perfect solution. Have seen the kits that are just a bulb replacement and not a full projector which IMHO aren't such a good idea.

POST 63 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, paint is taking way longer than expected as these things do. But as my  motto is "if its worth doing its worth overdoing" we are sorting out any of the short comings of a 1974 body while we are there. It' the final assembly stage now. Have been putting in some afternoons where I can to do all the fiddly stuff like dressing the doors and getting them swinging and latching right and all the trims on. Hopefully it rolls out of there tomorrow or early next week. Then fit the MCA coilovers sourced from Sven, bolt on the new wheels, get some setup in it, and hit the track. Pic below is paint straight off the gun. Buffing still to come.

POST 64Original post

With the coilovers, apparently you will need to reinforce the strut tops especially at the rear (if you haven't already!)

Luv the wheels and enjoying following your build - very impressive. Thinking about something similar for my 993 C2S. 2 questions -  How much do they weight and ball park how much are they?

POST 67 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 151981

Cheers. Re the weight, the rear wheel (18 X 11 with brand new 295 A050 R Comp) weighs approx 23.1kg on a baggage scale. So not uber light but far from heavy for rim and rubber of that size. Not sure what exotic super light weight wheels there are in that figment ?  Didn't get a chance to weigh without rubber and can't find any spec on what the tyre alone weighs. I am sure the rim would be similar to any SSR in an 18 X 11 size. Cost is circa 4K for the set. Import Monster were very helpful with procuring them as they were a special order from Japan.

POST 68 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, it's finally out of paint and into what I hoped was a week of straight forward bolt ons with the hope of driving it last weekend. Managed to get some time away from work to give it a push. Got the front legs in. Discovered they came with later model spindles with a bigger thread. So new bolt and washer to hold the hub on. No probs. Hub on. Preload set. Rotor on. Go to fit caliper.... No go. Seems the hole centres and offset are also different. Was a Bilstein not  Boge leg for caliper bolt spacing. New dog bones for the big red 4 pots required. Unlikely to get them sorted before the weekend. Regardless got the rest of the coilovers in, wheels on, headlights in and running. Just no front brakes but it's very close. Some other minor tweaks. Too much ball ache to get the steel fuel filler lid to integrate with the fibreglass guard and get the remote release working so smoothed the guard and put it under the bonnet. External canisters are hose clamped to the strut brace for now but hopefully sort billet brackets later. Still got some RSR winglets to go on the front bar as well. And front will get some more lows. Sitting a touch too high. Maybe get it on the scales tomorrow. Some pics below. Also had a bit too much time on my hands on the weekend. Spent way too much time browsing suspension options for old 911's. One thing struck me when I lifted the front lower control arms and cross member into place. Man they are heavy and gees there is some stiction on the lower control arms. So, in line with my motto of "if it's worth doing its worth overdoing", up front I have ordered the 935 style lower control arm kit. Is all heim jointed and alows camber and caster adjustment and wheel track along with longer control arms for better dynamic camber. At the rear have ordered the 935 spring plates and some monoball cartridges for the trailing arms. Also threw in some wevo engine and trans mounts. Also had a win. The guy who I bought the coilovers off actually has the dogbones that came off them as they were running big reds so is sending them over at no cost. Very grateful. So will mean another week off the road but should hopefully improve the overall package.

POST 69Original post

Looking great. I am very jealous, I wish mine was that close to finishing...

POST 71 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, super impressed with Elephant Racing. Got the suspension parts here in record time. Seems a zero was left off the shipped value so slipped through customs which was a bonus. All the gear bolted up beautifully. Really impressed with fit and quality. Got the car on he scales this morning.  Weighed in at 1040kg which I am happy with given the cage and full interior. Corner weights are good but typically rear biased as expected. The dogbone issue continued to haunt me. The dog bones Sven sent over had the right bolt centres for the legs as expected but unfortunately different bolt centres for the caliper so we're no good. But at least we had both sides of the puzzle now. Called in a favour with a machinist I had used and he knocked a new set up over night. Off for an alignment now (getting squeezed in between other jobs last minute) and then hopefully a cruise to the pub for Friday arvo beers later. If that all goes well, Porsche club Motorsport round at Barbagallo Monday. Baptism of fire

POST 72 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Onto the final phase. Dropped off for an alignment. Should be done by beer o'clock.

POST 73Original post

Such a low kerb weight! Must be a fun car to drive... looks great too - really has it's own sense of style with the wheels, subtle front splitter and headlights. You're based in QLD?

POST 74 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Chris, appreciate the compliments. Its really growing on me. Definitely the lack of mass, and ample tyre help make up for the relatively modest power. Really shifts your focus to flowing the car as you cant make easy time in a straight line. I bought the car in QLD but am based in Perth. Have managed to keep the QLD reg on it so I can avoid hassle in this state from the Rozzers given it is caged on full road reg. Had its first outing at Barbagallo with the Porsche club today. Was a real experience given it was my first time on a circuit in a 911. Got the baptism of fire with an arse first spin off the track on cold tyres in the first session. Then I started to get a feel for it and build some pace. By the end of the day I had improved my times by a couple of seconds a lap and the only thing in front of me was a GT3 on slicks......there were a few behind me as well. Really impressive how deceptively quick these old cars can be and can really hold their own against the new metal. Definitely plenty more to learn about the car to get the best out of it.

POST 76 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^* Thanks Mike a quick snap snap someone took at the track.

POST 77 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So what has been going on.....well quite a bit actually. :) Car was going well at the track but there is always room for improvement. Had heard reports that a shorter final drive really wakes these things up. So pulled the box out and sent it to Neat Gearboxes in SA for a full rebuild. Spent a bit of time punching final drive ratios into a calculator and decided on an Albins ring and pinion going from the factory 3.8 to 4.3 gears. And its true what they say. It definitely seems to accelerate harder and you have a nicer spread of gears on track. Also while it was in bits I added the bearing support plate, billet side cover and a WEVO gateshift kit. Also had all the gears micro polished which I hope will enhance reliability and longevity.  It is now a very sweet shifting box. Has come along way from the custard stirring experience when I first got it. While the engine was out I thought i would see what we could do to squeeze some more out of it. Trying to optimise everything short of pulling it apart and rebuilding it. On the intake side, I took off the factory plenum that I had gone to so much trouble to fit and fitted the trumpets and filters to the ITB's. On the exhaust side, I went for a fully split exhaust system off each bank as opposed to the fabspeed muffler that had a shared main muffler fed into from both banks. There is some debate around what works in this area but figured it was worth a crack. Got some custom Ti mufflers made up so shed 10kg off the rear while I was at it. The new intake.... The new exhaust Had found at the track the steering was a little slower than I would like. Took a little bit too much steering input to catch slides etc. Quick bit of googling and hey presto there is a quaife quick rack and pinion for the standard rack. Was actually pretty straight forward to fit.  Only slight glitch was having to get the rack milled out a touch to allow the pinion to be installed as its slightly larger diameter than stock. Other than that its a pretty straight forward solution to quicken the rack. Threw some new bearings in while I was down there. Its now 2.5 turns lock to lock. After having done a couple of track days with it, its a excellent mod. Even more direct steering control and feel and much quicker input to control the car on the ragged edge.

POST 78 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

With one eye on getting it towards being a tarmac rally car, and even for club track days, I am a fan of seats with side head restrain and combine them with a HANS. Tested my arse in some Velo apex and really liked them. The wings are also quite compact so good for the limited space in the 911. Had previously used Sparco but the wings are quite large and can cause packaging issues. Got them with red decals and porsche logos while I was at it. And the last piece of the puzzle of the engine power was to try some E85 in it. To kick it off we just tipped some in and ran it up on the dyno (with tuning to suit of course) and netted a bit more power and a nice jump in midrange. So encouraged by that I fitted a flex fuel sensor and had the MoTeC setup accordingly so it can now run either 98 or E85 or any combination of the two. Have found it runs noticeable cooler at the track with the E85 which cant be a bad thing and thaat fuel is essentially detonation proof. Then when not at the track, can still have the convenience of pulling into any service station and pumping 98 into it. And the final frontier in the search of lap times was to look at some aero improvements. After beign inspired by piloting a friends time attack car around Phillip Island with highly developed aero, I figured there was some room for improvement here. So on the front I sourced a GT2 style lip for the front. Was a very easy bolt on solution. ALso spotted to carbon bolt on canard/.dive planes in japan that replace the side reflectors. Both are a very easy bolt on bolt off option for non track duties. And the final piece of the puzzle was rear aero. True to my motto of "if its worth doing its worth over doing" I had the guys at Topstage Composites make a custom rear wing based on their V3 design. Essentially its the same blank, but I had it at 1600mm wide rather than their usual 1800 and alsso had the mounts set at a specified spacing to match the RSR wing base. The it was just some custom water cut ali uprights. It is undoubtedly over the top, but boy does it work. And again its  10 minute bolt on bolt off proposition. Useful ergonomic work desk when attending a trackday on a work day And the results of all this work....Over 2 seconds a lap (66 to 64 flat...definitely has a 63 in it) gained at Barbagallo, and an amazing feeling of grip and being on rails through the high speed corners. Overall its a significantly better package than it was and a far more exciting and engaging car to drive on the track. And making light work of a Cayman GT4

POST 84 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Gents. Am very happy with the way it's come along. Was already very impressed with it straight out of the box, but the extra mods have really sharpened it up and enhanced the driving experience. One more track day with the Porsche club here (combined with HSV club) so should be fun having a mix of cars, and the sending it to Vic for the PIARC double header in early November and then Challenge Bathurst at the end of November. Can't wait to pedal it around those two tracks.

POST 85 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, hadn't realised how much time had passed since I updated. Where do I start. Got the car across to Vic. Had a great couple of days down at PI. Managed to get the car down to a 1.44 which I was really happy with. Such an epic track. Despite the cars lack of power, it seemed to carry good corner speed which helped the lap times. From there it was off to Challenge Bathurst. A fantastic event. It was my first time to Bathurst to see the track let alone drive it. And it most certainly lived up to the hype. The first trip over the top which pretty overwhelming seeming to be concrete everywhere. But after a few laps you saw less of that and more of the racing line. Finished up the weekend with a 1.30. Was chasing a 1.29 but an over rev broke a rocker and put an end to my last 2 session. Some vid below. Was giving a 991 GT3 a decent run over the top but he had my measure down the straight. From there the car came back to Perth for a little bit of love as it had a tough road trip. Thankfully the broken rocker was nothing more sinister. Time to get back to the track. Was thinking of getting back to some tarmac rally so gave it a run at the local rally sprint. Was a heap of fun on the tight course and built speed during the night. From that point things have escalated. While the car was caged to CAMS specs, all the documentation was filled in by previous owner but never submitted. Unfortunately the regs had moved on and to meet current regs it was going to need another roof cross and a Carlos (A Pillar) bar. Thankfully I know a pretty exceptional welder here who was able to get the other rook cross bar in with the hood lining in place using a dentists mirror to see over the top of the bar to weld around it. It then needed some touching up of the paint. I decided to keep the rear half red, but paint the front half satin black to make it sink into the back ground and look half caged ala GT3 clubsport. Am happy with the way it came up.

POST 87 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Continuing on with my obsession with carbon and shedding weight from the car, I finally received my carbon dash. Its based on a 993 dash which I discovered has a slightly narrower binnacle to the dash in my car. I had already made a decision to delete the clock and replace it with a BTI Guage that would display MoTeC data, Thankfully this is slightly smaller in diameter, so solved the fitment problem. From there is was into the car. As it is top only, I had to sort something out to trim off the face. I came up with an aluminium substrate for support and a carbon skin over the top for bling. I think it should look quite tidy once the soon to be alcantara covered knee pads (with red stitch) are returned. Also fitted some billet buttons for battery isolation, hazards anf heated screen. I went 19mm but when they arrived I felt they were a bit small and now they are in I am even more convinced. I spaced them with this possibility in mind so will look to change up to 22mm. Also added a double USB socket and will alo look to mount MoTeC comms socket as well.

POST 88Original post

Nice save at 5.15 ? GT3 pilot chickened out on ya! Nice work mate

POST 89 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And then the point of highest escalation....the engine.... So I managed to break another rocker. I decided I had a fundamental problem of mismatched components. While the ITB's love to make it sing, the factory valve train does't enjoy it so much.....And I always had the idea in the back of my mind that keeping it heading in the direction of a 3.8RSR was a good thing. So I decided it was time for the 3.8. The engine was pulled down. Most of it was good news. Cases, crank all the main things we were going to use were in good shape. The only problem was the heads, The factory ceramic liners in the exhaust ports were cracked in a couple of them. No way to repair them. Finding second hand heads is a challenge and then you are faced with the risk of the same thing happening. New porsche heads are drug money, so that leaves after market. So after some research I saw 3 main options. CMW billet...never read anything good about them. Xtreme cast...read lots of good things (as used in the singer builds) and ninemeister billet. Also hear good things. After weighing up my options I went with the Xtreme cast heads. I corresponded and spoke with Bill at length and he was really helpful in putting together something to suit the needs of the build. So heads have come completely built, ready to bolt on with a full flow sheet. Some impressive numbers. Flow sheet was sent off to Elgin cams who they work with a bit, and some custom cams were supplied to match the flow data, other build specs and the intended use. The heads are a thing of beauty. So from there its most of the usual components. The hope is for a strong, reliable motor that will make good area under the curve. So I have gone Mahle machine fit cylinders, Pauter Rods, 993 RSR  pistons, standard 964 crank prepped, GT3 oil pump, lightweight flywheel. To make it look the part I found a carbon top shroud and also added the rennline billet rocker covers and have gone the single pulley conversion. Hopefully now most of the parts are here it should be together in about 3 weeks.

POST 91Original post

Awesome build. Looking forward to seeing how the engine comes together.

POST 94 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So things are getting very close to the getting this thing back on the road. Have been putting in time in the shed whenever I can but it has been a  bit hard to come by. My main focus has been getting the interior of the car in shape and electrically having it ready to go so when the engine is done I'm not holding things up at my end. I am finally pretty much there. Dash is all complete and in. All redundant wiring has been stripped out and the new switch gear wired up. . Have gone a cup car style isolating solenoid with a push switch on the dash and a pull cable that can be added to a toggle kill switch under the bonnet for actual rally/race use. My auto spark can take the credit for nutting that out. All the alcantara trim is done. I think old mate had sipped a few frothies by the time he did the knee pads. They didnt look too bad when I picked them up, but once lined up in the car they arent quite right. OCD says they will have to come off and get redone. The arm rests are decent. Was dreading roping in the front heated windscreen for some reason as I had never done it before. Turns out its as easy as it looks on the you tube videos although definitely a 2 man job for ease. (Thanks MFX ) Some pics below. Light is a bit shit in the shed as are the pics. Will get something proper when it is out in natural light. Also needs a thorough detail. And the most exciting bit being the engine. Its ready to drop in the hole. Just waiting for the builder to get a car off the hoist and will drop the car back and in it goes. Can't.....effin.....wait!!!!!!! Really keen to see what it kicks out on the dyno. The high comp should make good use of the E85.

So been indulging in a bit of motorpsort here in QLD. Managed to get up to Noosa for the winter hill climb. Cracking little section of tarmac. Had mixed conditions over the weekend with the track being wet to drying damp most of the weekend making it extra treacherous. Great bunch of people up there and a great mix of cars. Came away with a class win and 6th outright and drove it to and from the event. Made for a great weekend away. Bit of incar on a drying track. Have also been trying to improve the 915. Found the shifting got a bit notchy after a hard session at the track. Sourced an external cooler kit out of Germany and fitted it up last week.  Had a solid session at Lakeside yesterday. Shift quality doesn't seem to have deteriorated afterwards. On that note, my new mufflers were a success in dropping the dB levels. To be sure we got there I also added some v banded interchangeable tips so I could do some "Lakeside Specials". 5 minute job to put them on at the track. Cooler Kit New exhaust with interchangeable tips And some incar of some lakeside laps. Got down to a 56.7 which I am pretty happy with. You sure know you are alive coming through that back section into Hungry. Am still fluffling some changes with the old 1970's VW spec 915. Just need to be more patient with it. Hard to shake the habits of years driving sweet shifting proper synchro boxes.

Just driving it and enjoying it. I had it all set for the Noosa Hillclimb but it was cancelled due to fires. So car has fresh 050 tyres on it ready for a year of Motorsport. Just haven’t quite decided what the calendar looks like. The gearbox is performing really well with the cooler.  No degradation of the oil after several track days. Although am still keeping tabs on the development of the dog gearset. I am thinking custom ratios and setting up shift cut for flat shifts would be a good thing I replaced the oil cooler circuit thermostat on the engine circuit as it was running hotter than I would like. Now I don’t see temps above the 80degree bracket at the track after plenty of laps on a hot day. Huge relief to have that sorted. The only thing I reckon that will stop it lapping now is running out of fuel. 😁 . Currently race seat is out and sensible street seat is in and enjoying some drives to the shops and back and over some of the local twisty hills roads. Really enjoy how versatile this car is on track and on the road.  Can drive to the track and give a cup car a run for its money and then drive home via your favourite watering hole for a cleansing ale. Managed a trip out to Queensland Raceway before I hung up the gloves for the year. Had a great session with a 993 GT2 replica. It was well driven and had a bit more power (3.6 twin turbo) and slick tyres on. I only started to catch him due to an engine issue and him losing power.  Had the best view in the house.  Came away with a 1.18. Have toyed with the idea of fitting slicks and chasing faster times but I do like being able to drive to and from the track.
