POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After some time away having sold my boxster Spyder a couple of years back, I had been yearning for another Porsche. Having had a deposit on a 991.2 GTS which was cancelled after an extended test drive in both manual and PDK versions (reminded me of driving a fast armchair) and having tried a 997.2 3.6 manual, I stumbled upon a rather nice 2.9 manual Boxster. I know by some it will be considered full on girl spec, but for my 12 mile B road commute to work, from what I have read will probably be the most fun from the modern Porsche range. Something with just the right amount of power so you can keep your toe in. Swapping out my RS4 which is an excellent mile muncher, but not dynamic enough for the B roads. My previous F56 mini was epic as it was a JCW with quaife, 17”, Michelin PSS, KW coils corner weighted etc. That engine however had zero character and was concerned about longevity. The only prob with the Spyder I found was as a daily it was a bit jiggly ride wise and only came alive above 50 mph which is where most of the speed limits are locally. Having carbon buckets also after a meeting etc meant you couldn’t chill out. As that was “purist spec” no parking sensors, crap stereo, inability to mod it as would detract from the value. The 3.4 also meant you wouldn’t really hear much engine noise on day to day driving. The car however was epic on the ring! This new car only has 7100 miles on the clock, major service just completed and a brand new set of N2 Michelin’s. It will need a few choice mods which will take course over time, but sincerely hoping this will be the perfect B road daily driver with just the right combo of speed and creature comforts. Quite surprised to learn the brakes are the same as on the S model as they were superb on the ring. Picking up at the weekend so will report back after the initial 150 mile drive! So happy to be back in Porsche, even if it is at the poverty end of the spectrum! Any other owners views on the 2.9 are most welcome :-)

POST 2Original post

I think the 2.9 987.2 is a cracking little car and often overlooked in favour of the 3.4.Test drove a boxster 2.9 about 2011 at PEC and was pleasantly surprised, it would have to be manual though which I would have over a pdk 3.4.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah just literally going to be a daily driver for fun to work and back. I think mods performance wise will be limited to a filter, remap and a set of manifolds. Then think about those Ohlins R&T plus some subtle interior upgrades, Alcantara trimming etc.

POST 4Original post

Looks amazing and I think you made a good choice! Spyder looks insane on the ring too!

Then think about those Ohlins R&T plus some subtle interior upgrades, Alcantara trimming etc. Not see that good a report on the Ohlins for this model. Most after market stuff is way too hard. Just drive it :-) As for modes better off with a short shift, engine mount , and monoball toe links. Give you a bit more extra feel, but it has that in spades over new stuff as is.

POST 6Original post

Nice, much under rated. I really enjoyed my 987.2 2.9. Cmoose is there really a marked difference between 17s and 18s on these? On passive suspension you’d think it must be marginal. Brakes wise the 2.9 got the same brakes as the 987.1 3.2S if I remember correctly, which are plenty.

POST 7Original post

Perfect choice, Jay. My 987.2 Cayman 2.9 was a joy yo drive and I never once regretted not getting the 3.4S....2.9 has plenty of power for legal fun and sounds better too. Look forward to reading how you get on. Cheers!

POST 8Original post

Great looking car OP. I've been keeping an eye on a 987.2 2.9 for a long time, I think it would also suit my 10 mile b road commute perfectly. The only sticking point is finding one with ISOFIX and airbag deactivation which seems like an option nobody ticked. I only need to collect my 2.5year old from nursery once a week... and happy to have a belt seat... but not happy with inability to deactivate airbag.

I like my cars to feel darty and that profile on a Porker you loose that while you wait for the rubber/slip angle to catch up with your input. great for winter , lacking in the Dry once pushing on and loading up the tyres imo of course

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some really interesting comments guys. Cheers. I think yes, I will get used to it again and the decide what I want to tweak. Short shift kit was one of the ideas as it was superb on the Spyder. Might get a set of 17” just to try it out but have to confess a bit of lowering and some 18” spaced out would make it look a bit more beefy. Let’s see. The dealers is near the Peak District so may as well detour via there on the way home. The previous only only did roughly 1k miles per year in it in the first 5 years and there were mot comments about pitting to the brake discs on the first MOT. Time to wake that baby up and dust of the cobwebs!

POST 11Original post

anonymous said: [redacted] It's personal preference. he drives 911 and was impressed at the Cayman better turn in, no surprise that , but that's not down to the 17" wheels lol I don't like the lag in the dry on higher profile tyres, it's that simple., you seem to, it is what it is. Have you fitted a GT3 MC to your new car yet lol if you knew more about slip angles, you would realise when you turn the wheel you have to wait for the tyre to catch up. nice in the wet as you can feel the lack of grip in the rain and it's safter as you get more warning , in the dry ,it just feels s t imo. Harris is talking about drift angles, not slip angles so his report is wrong ! stating slip.angles but than again not many people understand what a slip angle is. At the end of the day a lower profile tyre turns in sharper and more direct, that's just basic physics. Edited by Porsche911R on Wednesday 6th February 11:11

POST 12Original post

anonymous said: [redacted] to quote his line "It isn.t necessary to drive at speed to generate noticeable slip angles" he is talking about drifting as that's all he does lol If you like the lag and feeling of 45 series rubber that's great, but understand what a slip angle is before posting. Slip Angle: In vehicle dynamics, slip angle or sideslip angle is the angle between a rolling wheel's actual direction of travel and the direction towards which it is pointing. In his line he really means Drift/slide-angle ! ie which way his car is pointing lol And while the net effect of talking about slip angles front to rear has to do with understanding what a car is doing to get into a drift or understeer, the Harris post is really talking about his drift/slide angle as normal. Slip angles can be complex subject. One it seems you know nothing about ! Harris is talking about how far he can get the back end out.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Feel privileged to have your legendary banter on this thread. I can see the love has grown over the years!! One benefit of such low mileage is that you get to feel it relatively fresh. My spider had 11k when I purchased. However when I chopped it in, the left track rod felt shagged at only 19k. I guess the 8 laps of the ring didn’t help.

POST 16Original post

anonymous said: [redacted] again the 1st phase has to do with the mid engine nature of the car vs the 911 nothing to do with 17" wheels as I stated, and no shock he felt that way, hence I loved hooning about in my R's for 5 years. to go back to 2011 if you like reviews :-) on Autocars best drivers car 2011. Steve Sutcliffe described the winning Cayman R’s steering as “about as sweet as it gets,” Go do a vehicle dynamics course or some thing ;-) I think you need to under stand "slip-Angles"

The Boxster 987.2 manual is a delight apart, that is, from the underwhelming standard halogen lights.

POST 18Original post

Happy motoring in your new car ...If you remember I meet you at the dealership in Edinburgh when you took delivery off your Spyder ..I still have mine but sold the 981 Spyder a few weeks ago and bought a nice 3.2s 986 to use and keep the Spyder for special trips . Brian

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Brian Yes feels like only yesterday that I was up there. Thanks for coming down! Glad to hear you are still enjoying yours :-) Re the post about halogen lights. I actually thought they were quite good for halogens. Had a 2014 e class at the time which had led lights and on high beam the Porsche was actually quite nice. I have seen some Phillips led bulbs which are about £130-150 which replace stock headlight bulbs. Could be a good shout. Can’t wait for the weekend!

I have done something similar and sold my 981 spyder now replaced with 987.2 s. Its no spyder but I enjoy it just as much and in some ways more as im less precious about it. The only area its significantly behind a 981 is torsional stiffness, noticeable with the roof down. I actually prefer the quiet exhaust because Im old and want to make progress without attracting unwanted attention. No regrets at the bargain price.

Cheaper so less bothered about it. If turns out to be something I fall In love with, already know some choice interior and style mods which will really set it off individually. Nothing like a lovely cosseting interior! Do you get more over run sound with it being non dfi? I remember my spider popped once after a hard drive and actually scared me. Hate these new contrived pops and bangs mapped in. In the old days a proper bang meant you have had a solid drive. Not ponying around trying to attract attention.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Right, after 400 miles seat time there is lots to report back. Firstly the car doesn’t remotely feel run in. Engine feels tight and the brakes feel totally awesome. More to look forward to when it loosens up. The brake pedal feels far better than my old Spyder which had around half a cm of travel before you got into the brakes. These work straight away but don’t have the new car grabbyness, just progressive feel as you press harder. This car is on Conti SC3 N1 which are brand new and not the Michelin’s I mistakenly thought were on there. Still they don’t seem to bad but building my confidence in them as never had Conti before. Things I love. The damping is awesome. Very stiff and controlled, but doesn’t crash. Just a notch down from the Spyder making it that bit more ideal for day to day. Around 40 mph it’s gliding over the surface but totally keyed in. Love the stock leather seats. You can sit far lower than the sport buckets and being able to recline means you don’t need to be sitting upright in traffic which is far better for daily use. As much as I love buckets, for a daily it’s pointless imo. I did daily my mini works for 5 years with recaro pole positions so perhaps those seats are an exception. You can pull the steering wheel right out and all the way down to get butted up next to the engine. Coming back to a nice stiff clutch, connected gear shift, steering you actually have to put some effort into and a brake pedal that is so feelsome is a total joy. I feel like I’m driving again. The engine on the motorway was pretty good. Cruising in 6th and overtaking was adequate enough. Probably less usable than a Porsche should be in most people’s eyes power wise, but on my daily commute, it’s actually perfect. You are rarely above the speed limit but you can still thrash and enjoy the engine sound, the connectivity through the bends and quick reaction of the car. Going hard through first second and third shows the car is clearly quick enough and when going through bends need to up your heel and toe game to be able to drop down to second. No leaving in 3rd and riding the torque. Fun factor is massively increased and skills are improving as the miles go on. This car makes you a better driver! The creature comforts are nice, climate, heated seats, cup holders. All stuff the Spyder didn’t have which would have made it more usable daily. Still I guess not in character with that car. Just feels cozy driving around in it. In conclusion, I think my mods will be fairly limited as the car is amazing out of the box. 9 excellence said with a decent tune and manifolds 20whp is possible. I guess if it gives it another 20lb ft which most research suggests the car will pretty much be perfect for B roads. Just needs that flat sport around 3k mapped out. A fast road geo from the same people made the Spyder epic so will replicate here. Not enough exhaust noise, but induction noise is far louder than I remember on my Spyder. Lastly, an alcantara steering wheel, gear knob and boot and handbrake to enhance the contact points. Heard good things about the GT3 shifter as well. Headlight upgrade also already ordered as candles are not cutting it on the unlit country roads. I can see why the cayman r is probably the perfect road car with comfort seats, xenons, MT, ac and cup holders. The response of the 3.4 in any gear is far better but still gets you to crazy speeds quite quickly. The torque feels solid in all gears but still encourages you to use all the Rev range. Love the Porsche way of looking at power and torque to weight to devise their cars. I reckon when the 2.9 is “unlocked” it will have just that extra edge it needs to make it what it should be. Hopefully when this thing is run in I get more top end zing. It still feels tight going over 5k. Found out the car had a clutch after 4 year old and 4K miles as due to lack of use it had seized on the flywheel so both were change. Will prob give it till 10k miles and then do the remap so it’s had a chance to stretch itself. Last bit, fuel economy is epic. 450 miles out of a tank on m way and around 400 on my journey means with tax, insurance & fuel will be saving around 4K a year against my RS4. Winning all around and I don’t see any of these 987.2 so quite unique on the road! So glad I went for this model. The newer ones whilst probably easier for day to day are a bit softer around the edges for my liking. This feels like a sports car through and throughout and isn’t so perfect that you are filtered out from the actual joy of driving. Looking forward to the next 100k plus miles. This is Defo a daily that will be staying :-)

POST 24Original post

Great write up...sounds like the start of a great love affair. I’ve had my 987.2 for seven years and wouldn’t swap it for anything.

POST 25Original post

I think the 2.9 is probably ideal power wise for our B roads, fast enough to have a ton of fun but not so fast you can’t stretch it out. With manifold (& exhaust?) should sound excellent too. Is your previous Spyder GT Silver? Stunning looking car

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah previous Spyder was platinum silver. This new one is basalt similar to panther black. It’s so mint not one chip. Tempted to get ppf on the bonnet and bumper to keep it protected for the years to come. Will be ceramic coating soon. My pal at minutia detailing is nothing short of epic and a proper perfectionist. Roll on the summer!!

Hate these new contrived pops and bangs mapped in. In the old days a proper bang meant you have had a solid drive. Not ponying around trying to attract attention. Mine is a 3.4 so the dfi engine. Drivetrain wise the gear ratios are better due to the smaller wheels so effectively just the final drive is shifted. The 3.4 revs sweeter than the 3.8 but some of this is down to the quieter exhaust which always gives that perception. The 981 3.8 made great noises for 10 minutes but its mainly exhaust noise not induction with the blaring as the valves open in the upper rev range both annoying and infantile in equal measure. Certainly cant get under the radar ! The stock 987.2 is very muted and really more about induction noise which I prefer as I realised its really the flat six signature as it was in the aircooled motor. I fitted noisy pipes to my 993 and hated it so back to stock I went. For instance in my 997 GTS I enjoyed the induction sound and smoothness so used to drive mostly with the sports exhaust off , in the 981 spyder it was lost. Having said all this I have opened up the internals of the stock 987.2 box to increase the voice slightly but its very slight and just about enough, most would say its not enough.

After some more miles and a commute into London. Feels great. Managed to get some hard stops in just before abs kicks in and boy are they solid! Even had the tyres smoking! Adapted driving style now a bit so not really finding the lack of torque an issue. How ever can tell it needs some negative camber urgently on the front end. Man driving this thing is so much fun!!!

good on ya - sometimes less is more - you have to try harder :-)

Sounds great. I do sometimes miss the slightly shorter (due to wheel size!) gearing of my 987.1 3.2 compared to my 981. It makes the long gearing just about acceptable.... Might have to add another 987 in future to the collection. Never owned a 987.2, so that could be a good idea. Would have to have 200 cell headers installed though, as when I test drove the 987.2 years ago the sound was a bit poor compared to 987.1 with Carnewal. Probably due to cats muffling the sound, and maybe DFI change. Has anyone mapped a 987.2 3.4 to take away the power roll-off at the top end of the Rev range (would make it more like the 2.9 character maybe?)? To me that’s the joy of NA - the build to red line, though most people just want low down torque these days.

Looking at the power curve of the 2.9 and 3.4 it’s pretty much the same. Peak power at 6500 and then it holds to just over 7k from what I can see. The Spyder made peak power at 7200 and the cut out was 7400/7500 I think. I saw the carnewal oem manifolds with HJS for 1k which looks decent and they say it gives you the 10hp increase. 9 excellence say with headers and tune 20whp is possible which is enough really. Don’t know whether the extra cash is worth it for the proper longtube ones as it’s around 2k more for no extra power but I’m sure The drivability will feel better with a proper equal length manifold rather than the crushed stock ones. Just want the 3k dip mapped out and power to be made further up like the Spyder. Racing through the gears on that car was great fun as the feeling just before the redline was amazing. Just felt like it would pull forever. First mod this weekend is to upgrade the headlights. Stock aren’t bad but you need to keep using high beam. Rather have decent dipped lights.

Thought I would update this thread as it’s been a few months. After collecting the car I got mike a minutia derailing to give the car a full correction and ceramic coat. The car literally looked like new. Hard to believe it was 8.5 years old at the time. After this I thought I would just run it in a bit more as the engine was still pretty tight. Fast forward to today and a chance over 7 k miles to evaluate what I did and didn’t like about the car. Firstly my thoughts are the 2.9 is genuinely 80 of what my 987 3.4 Spyder was for 50 pc of the price. The ride was equally poor imo. At low speeds 35 and under, they both rode like pogo sticks. Above this on the right B road they do come together amazingly well, but the 2.9 suspension gets flustered at higher speeds. Damping too stiff but springs feel like they aren’t doing much. Picked up a few choice upgrades to lift the interior comprising of oem boxster carbon dash trims, gear surround, handbrake and gear knob. Looks far nicer now. Also have the Spyder front corner splitters and a sport design rear ducktail spoiler. Not chav but oem. All of this has made it feel and look a little more distinctive but after an oil change it was time to get stuck in. I had done a lot of research on the Ohlins RT kit and seen a lot had said it was too stiff. After further googling I saw CG had had good results by lowering front rates to 50nm and rear to 70nm. I spoke with BG Motorsport in Silverstone and as they work quite closely with CG concurred it would be a good solution with our rougher roads. They did a cracking supply, corner weight and fit on the car. Also opted for whatever max camber the front is able to run as stock. Kept the drop to -20 mm as per Porsche on the Spyder and Ohlins recommendations. What can I say. It feels like a totally different car. The brittleness of the stock dampers and ride is totally gone. No more pogo and car being thrown off line by mid Corner bumps. No creaks. Throw in at any speed and it’s locked down. On the motorway you don’t need to press the accelerator hardly at all to maintain 70-75 mph. Fuel economy is up. Brakes, just touch them and you feel the car stopping faster with no diving. Car takes off better as less squat. Currently running 13 from full stiff on front and 15 from full stiff at rear. The car glides over the surface and on high speed crests, large compressions etc is totally unfazed. The car only has 15k miles on it so the oem hardware is still in good order but this suspension is on another level to Kw I have had in the past. You can get the back out now even though it has minimal torque. For wet driving you could consider softening but had a nice wet run out on Saturday and it was still locked down despite bumping roads etc. no sliding just pure control. Was a bit scared it may twitch but nothing of the sort. Front is so Darty. I can whole heartedly recommend this set up and BG Motorsport to any enthusiast. Amazing service from them and massive attention to detail. They also are the UK Ohlins service centre and rebuild these most other things. was great to see a lmp1 and wrc set of shocks being refurbished. Lovely people and unmatched price. They said 6kg light than stock units as well to boot. Next mods will be the Apex SM 10 in 18” which should save a couple KG and give it a tougher stance. 9e recommends bmc, plenum, oem mani with 200 cell and remap to add around 30hp and 20lb ft. Will be perfect as even now with the stock power, as you can stay on it even more, it stays in its zone more often. If your on the fence, don’t be. Will be the best single mod you can do!!

Worst pic of the lowering but once it stops raining will give a proper clean and pic on level ground. Needs more aggressive offset wheels to bring it together. Still shocked at how much of an animal the suspension has made the car into. Below pic shows stock Spyder spring rates in comparison. |

Had the common gear cable snap a couple of weeks ago. Was a good excuse for an oem shifter kit. Had the SSK on my old Spyder but it feels way better in this. Perhaps due to new shifter cables. As the gear change is so much quicker, rev matching on downshifts is more pleasurable, and changing up means less delay before getting on power. Makes the file feel totally like one solid piece. Tight brakes, tight gear shift, tight suspension and good throttle response (better when higher up in the rev range). Next mods are new wheels and unlocking the hidden 30hp in the engine!

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh an also forgot, nine excellence do some excellent zunsport style front bumper grills. They aren’t ugly and over the front but recessed behind the bumper slats. Much easier to get leaves out but doesn’t allow the mulch to form at the bottom of the bumper. Cheaper than zunsport to boot as well!

Lepsons certainly know what they are doing! Will go well with the satin black sprayed Spyder side vents.

Haven’t updated this for a while but car is currently in the garage having a full m&m manifold back exhaust system with 200 cell cats. Picked this up for an amazing price from a German ebay site. Last October had a tyre failure so ended up with PS4s all around. Transformed the car over the old PS2. So much more comfortable. Also did goodridge stainless lines. The brake pedal is so much firmer now and way more progressive. I think some PF pads will go on next. Fast road gel was also done at nine excellence. Didn’t have much time to drive it properly due to all these lockdowns but really looking forward to the summer this year. Hopefully the old hairdryer sound is replaced by some quality flat 6 sounds. Thinking to finish it off with a remap but prices vary so much. Chip wizards seem to have a great rep and reasonable price at 400 plus vat. Did the same on my Subaru with a know tuner and the live map was around 500-550 I think doing it on the road. Few pics but need to get the SLR out still!

What spring rates would you recommend for the Ohlins - road use only.

POST 45 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There was an article CG did where they recommended reducing rates to 50nm front and 70 nm rear. Ohlins recommend 70nm front and 80 nm rear but these are generally regarded as better smoother european roads. https://www.pressreader.com/uk/911-porsche-world/2...

That's my car in the article and now having lived with it a few years for road use only I would say 40nm front and 60 nm rear, which is what I will be changing to soon. Edited by Rocket. on Wednesday 10th March 16:50 What do you feel about the body roll? I still think mine could do with some stiffer arb, only marginally mind. If you stiffen up the dampers, i.e when using on smooth roads or the track its perfect as the roll is dialled out, just for the road I find the spring rates perfect but just needs a touch less pitch on turn in. Are you going to re-valve the dampers to suit the lower spring rate?

Are you going to re-valve the dampers to suit the lower spring rate? Body roll with current set up is ok for me but you make a good point, Centre Gravity have suggested maybe going stiffer and I asked about Cayman R roll bars but they seemed to think the difference wouldn't really be that noticeable and said if I wanted stiffer aftermarket was the way. I will probably stick with standard ARB for now and see as my car is 90 pct road but when on track stiffen more on the rebound, they have said no need to re-valve so I go with them as they are the experts.

As another 987.2 2.9 owner I’ve enjoyed reading this thread - thanks! Am also due new tyres later this year - a cursory glance suggests that PS4 tyres not available for the rears (265 on 18 inch wheels). Where did you manage to find ones that fit? Are they PS4 or PS4S as I hear they are v different. I will be interested to hear your thoughts on your latest upgrades particularly to responsiveness and torque. Thanks for keeping the thread going!

Thanks for keeping the thread going! thanks buddy. yes the PS4S are in 19". i did get a set of PS4S in 18" for my Subaru which comes with 235/40/18 all around but i guess these would only work on the front of the 2.9. I picked up the car today from Parr in Crawley. Nothing short of amazing service by them and their wealth of knowledge really shines through when things get tricky. having had a brief run back home, i am thinking this is the TUV version of the exhaust as it is really quiet, a lot quieter than i was expecting considering 200cell cats. last time i did such a mod, it made the car an animal sound wise (supercharged JCW with factory JCW exhaust) however what it has done is just increased the creamyness of the engine 10 fold. the torque dip at 3 -4 is really reduced heavily now and you can see the numbers on the speedo increasing far faster than before. when going through bends you can really get rid of the front end roll by applying more throttle and it now has much more mid range torque to play with the balance of the car. not so fast and torquey however that you cant really get into the upper reaches which is exactly what i wanted to avoid. around to the redline it just pulls so cleanly and static throttle blips see the engine responding far far quicker. almost like a lightweight flywheel has been fitted. the car is fantastic on the b roads, proper little missile and so much fun. As I use the car a fair bit i am happy it isn't silly loud, I quickly dropped the roof for 2 mins and the sound was much better. Coming into my village it reverberates a lot more of walls, houses etc so just generally beefier. I have to say I am super happy and its a worthy mod. I was going to drop full price on the exhaust at some point in the next year but someone was shining on me to pick up exactly what i wanted at the price i did. will get some quality pictures and videos up of the sound very soon. all in, I highly recommend this M&M system. i think a remap will just finish it off nicely and get that TB opening the way it was designed to rather than held back by the manufacturers agenda.

Glad to hear you’re pleased with the outcome jayxx83! Sounds like a real transformation. I look forward to seeing (and hearing!) the videos soon.

We need details / photos / thread please!!! haha yes the s204 is mine. got a bit of a lockdown bargain last year on that. the car is as new bar small marking to drivers bolster which can easily be repaired by a pro. amazing considering it has 60k miles on it. took it to surrey subaru specalists last year and just said "do everything" and they changed all fluids belts, new tyres, alignment blah blah. had it mapped for uk v power but its kept in professional storage as i know the price on that is only going one way. will be getting the full underbody protection and self heal ceramic coat this year but its sporadic dry use only. it literally is as new. Approx 335hp and 355 lb ft as stock when it was mapped. will upload a few more pics from purchase day in a mo. a real animal
