Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report a fix
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported fix
They always cleaned the battery terminals but not the inside of the battery leads. When we did that, problem gone.
Leading evidence: 'Clean battery terminals' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery cable connection' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). Reported cause
Tried all sorts of things.......cut a long story short.....it turned out to be a bad battery cable connection.

It responded to a jump so took it over to Franz Balm, they tested alternator which was fine and put in a new interstate battery.

Suspected cause
If it was the battery, it wouldn't have died at an intersection unless not properly charged.

Suggestion
Also, you might want to check the fuse panel and see what circuit has a draw, when the keys are out of the ignition.

Suggestion
The alternator just keeps the battery topped up so if it was a bad alternator you should have been able to run for some time as the battery ran down, and then the battery would have tested as pretty much totally discharged.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have read alot of post before posting.
Just bought a 996tt, a week ago, it started having a weak start, then would not start. Lights come I hear the pump then just click, click, click. Best guess battery. It responded to a jump so took it over to Franz Balm, they tested alternator which was fine and put in a new interstate battery.
Next day same problem as above, so as I Was Taking it in, the car just died in the middle of the intersection.
My guess would be the alternator. If it was the battery, it wouldn't have died at an intersection unless not properly charged. Keep us posted on what they come up with,
All the following assumes that the replacement battery they fitted is good!!
Many years ago I had the exact same problem with a Ford van. Tried all sorts of things.......cut a long story short.....it turned out to be a bad battery cable connection. They always cleaned the battery terminals but not the inside of the battery leads. When we did that, problem gone. If it's not that then my next place to look would be the battery ground location.
BTW, alternators don't provide the energy for the car, the battery does. The alternator just keeps the battery topped up so if it was a bad alternator you should have been able to run for some time as the battery ran down, and then the battery would have tested as pretty much totally discharged.
Thanks for all the deedback. will have them check up mentioned issues. Waited 2 hours for a tow, franz thinks it is the alternator because just before dying volt inst read 8-9v
yeh it should be reading somewhere around 14 or slightly below. Certainly not 8 or 9. I managed to get a rebuilt alternator for a Deville I had last year for half the price of a new one so you might want to look in that direction before splashing out on a new one. However make sure it is the exact same alermator as you have to hand your old one in to the firm.
Shop order a porsche rebuilt alternator for about 550. Should be here Wednesday. Keep u guys posted.
On another note this is my first ttx50. Much much faster than than the two 996's I have had. Can't wait to enjoy driving it!!!!
Just picked my car this morning, down around $900, but at least I can spool those turbos. Issue resolved with the new alternator. Thanks for all the help. Now I will search why why "oil pressure failure" keeps coming on. It this this on my previous 02 996c2, as well.
