Had a PPI done before I bought the car about a month ago and was told I should replace the coils as they are starting to crack. Car has 43,000 miles now. I am going to do the coils
next
week. Should I change the plugs also? Any other suggestions? Thanks.
Yes, you are already there and the service interval is about every two years.
Spark plug
intervals for the
987.1
are 36K or 4 years (or 40K and 4 years for the
987.2
) No plugs require replacement at 2 years, and even four years is honestly on the short side if you're not doing a lot of miles.
At 43K if you don't have any documentation of them being replaced, I'd just replace them. It's not much extra work once you've gotten the coils out anyway, and the proper
Bosch
plugs are not especially expensive if you buy from someplace besides
Porsche
. If they were documented done at 36K or 40K I would call them good.
Double ditto on not buying plugs from
Porsche
. The parts counter at my local dealer wants $36 EACH for plugs. I laughed and told the guy I was impressed he kept a straight face.
Also, have your assortment of socket extensions and universals ready for the
plug
nearest the passenger/right side. Very tight spot but doable.
FWIW you can also use a cheap endoscope to peek inside while you have the plugs out to see how the pistons and walls look. A few pics from my $30 scope at around 70,000 miles.

good info from all. what model scope did you get and where? very useful tool I do not have
thanks
Adding a pointer for anyone coming across this thread: an assortment of
locking
extensions really helps with this job.

I did this job when I bought mine last year as well. Found that 3 of my coils were cracked. Make sure to get the new thicker coils. I bought the deep socket and used a swivel socket attachment and it was not a difficult job. I would definitely recommend doing the plugs at the same time as coils.
Where did they crack? Any pics?

It was a $18 Fantronics scope from
Amazon
. I have used it many times to look at things on the car. Hard to argue with the price.
