on my 2011 Base Cayman. 50,000 miles or so. I check the coolant level cold every 2500-3000 miles. Inevitably I have to add about 6 ounces or so to bring it up to minimal level . I see no leaks , I have had both covers off and looked for telltale drip marks - nothing. I occasionally smell the radiator fluid smell after she is hot at the drivers side rear outside intake. Again no leaks, no warnings , never overheats . Just wondering if anyone might have insight to this ? Could I be venting it somehow ? Should I be concerned ?
I'd start by replacing the coolant reservoir cap that's inside the engine compartment. Mine went bad at 50K miles. Relatively cheap.
Heh. My 2010 has the *exact* same behavior, and I've pressure tested both the cap and the overall coolant system.
The cap vents vapor in normal operation by design, and my assumption at this point is that it's just coolant slowly escaping as vapor over time.
that has been my gut feeling , just venting, Ill go with that for now , I may try a new cap as well, and you do mean the fill cap correct ?? thanks !
There are two caps. The fill cap (in the trunk) is just a seal with an o-ring. That's likely fine if you're not seeing any white residue or liquid around the base of the cap.
The actual pressure cap is in the engine bay on top of the coolant tank. That is designed to vent at ~20PSI as the coolant expands and heats up, and then it lets air back into the system as it cools down. Caps can go bad over time and open too soon or not open at all.
I've got a pressure tester so I was able to test mine. If there's no coolant residue on top of the reservoir it's *probably* good. They're not very expensive to just replace, though.
Gubi, thanks
interesting , do you happen to have a part number, when I search for the cap on my Cayman the only one that shows is the blue fill cap ( mine is fine) . I assume you get to it by removing the top engine cover ?
Yes, you remove the engine cover. The coolant expansion tank is right on top.
This is what ECS Tuning gives me for the Porsche part. They also have aftermarket ones that are cheaper. Set your car model and look under Engine->Cooling

Thought I’d follow up Both caps replaced and issues gone. Thanks all
