It had apparently recently been serviced and been given a clean bill of heath (I suspect a clean health check, rather than a 111 point check though).

The debate about ex press and thrashed, could put you off, but I am reliably informed that the press fleet are fastidiously maintained between each test/loan and before they go out of the door to be sold.

Does anyone know of this car?

Looks like a pretty amazing spec and don’t see many in Carmine, really suits it considering its not a colour I would have gone for. Been listed for a while now though and I thought it would have been snapped up
I don't follow 981 GTS prices but surely the 718 GTS 4.0 has hurt them.
You can order one for just north of £70k with buckets as long as you don't crazy with other options. That's pretty compelling given that engine is essentially a GT4 unit... warranty etc. compared to a 6yo 981 GTS which at the end of the day has the 3.4 and not the end of the NA era 4.0.
£50k starts to look pretty expensive for a 6yo car and must be giving lads food for thought...they find the extra cash or sign up to extra finance. Also, I've heard of 3.5% discount being offered on GTS 4.0...that pays for the GTS pack on the configurator..
981 GTS doesn't have the captive audience it did a year ago.
I know it’s the not the final swan song of the N/A Cayman so it’s lost a little bit in that regard, but I’d still say the 981 GTS is a desirable thing.
It’s £26k cheaper than the GTS 4.0 that I have specced. That is not an insignificant amount.
A 981 gts is extremely well sort after and still comands big money on the secondhand market .
As with all Porsches keeping the mileage very low is the key for retaining value? Around 4k miles or less i believe?
Yes the 718 4.0 is a better all round car apart from 1 thing . The 981 gts is considered one of the best cars have ever produced.
Buckets, PCCB, Carbon, manual, nice colour, great interior, pretty much perfect spec, lowish miles....
If you could get a couple of £k off, it would be a good buy IMO
I doubt you’ll find another like that for a while...
David W. said:

Yep i totally agree with you, but thats what market dictates.

A manual car is a very spec , only around 70 built

I would agree it wouldn’t be lowish miles once I’ve had it

That really is a Unicorn spec car....I remember the Sales Manager at my OPC telling me a car they had thus equipped was a better car than a GT4 (which he owned personally). Whether that’s true or not I have no idea but that’s a great spec car which will always fetch strong money relative to other cars. Carmine may not be everyone’s cup of tea but was launch colour for 991.1 GTS when it was first released....so is a “GTS colour”
I suspect the PCCBs, manual and buckets put off as many people as they attract.
I could easier justify the premium over my 981S which is higher spec than many GTSs, cosmetics aside. But the cost to change would buy a Caterham on top of my current car, which is in a different league for driving dynamics and engagement compared with the marginal improvement this would offer.
Yidwann said:
The issue is there are currently 2 manual 981S for sale.... 2!
Yes, to be honest, the manual box is the biggest improvement this car would offer me compared with my PDK 981S. I'm truly staggered by how popular PDK has become, in what is supposed to be a sports car.

It's a pity the owner didn't go the full distance and order climate control and heated seats.

It just shows what happens when the marginal buyer's attention is drawn elsewhere.
Stuff suddenly stops fetching the big premiums and buyers/sellers can't understand why.
£50k buys alot of 6yo Porsche let alone when you start looking at other brands. This nearly buys you an AMG GTS or at least will next year I suspect.

Nope. It was a car they had previously had and didn’t have at the time. and I’ve never expressed an interesting in buying a Caymen...my wife has a Boxster and I have a 991.2 GT3 so have no need for one. It was just a general conversation and that was his observation. I would say it was an honest opinion not skewed because he thought I wanted to buy one/had one to sell !

This is true, I’ve even looked at the Merc myself, it’s a lot of car at 50k but I fear it’s a bit too big and auto only for the B Road driving I most enjoy!
I was actually surprised at the spec when I opened the OP's link.
He should make his best offer and sit on it. They will scoff at it but I just tell them I won't feel offended if they sell it to the queue of lads lined up at their door ready to buy it.
Also, that dealer needs to learn how to take photos...
I’m in the fortunate position that it’s an option for me, not the “I must have that one” car. The Spec does it make it super appealing, I mean shock horror that I’d be happy with something without heated seats mind!
So, Andy, what you’re saying makes sense

It's a car I'd love to have alongside a Cayman to use... not as my only car. £130k new and beautifully engineerd by a accounts.
Porsche is on real purple patch now and don't for a minute think has to go on forever.
I think it's because over Covid alot of middle aged lads decided they only live once and want a sports car. Porsche is their natural first stop. It definitely wouldn't be an AMG GTS...
I think it's important to step outside the Porsche bubble and look around a bit every so often

Those buckets definitely keep your buns warm.
I like the carmine. It's what I would have if I couldn't get something a bit crazy like Python Green or Riviera Blue.
I have it in my head that a GTS 4.0 in a few years is my natural upgrade path but you can't ignore the fact that the 3.4 is a great engine for a road car.
It comes down to whether you like it in 987 or 981 flavour.
I think this is the only other GTS on AutoTrader with buckets.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2020122072...
I can see why the OP is keeping an eye on the red one. Hit them over Xmas with an offer as I bet they're surprised they still have the car. They'll either want to turn over stock or wait for the Spring bounce (assuming that happens as 2021 will be a year like no other IMO)

I love the 981 GTS in general - I've owned 2 of them.
I called up about this car origianlly when the ad appeared. I love Carmine and PCCB, Buckets, spanish 'box and sports chassis make it pretty much unique (in that colour).
I got the strong impression that the dealer was in no hurry to sell at all. It had apparently recently been serviced and been given a clean bill of heath (I suspect a clean health check, rather than a 111 point check though).
An offer would definitely be approrpaite.
If the car checks out, it would be a great buy for somebody. The 981 has just the right amount of usable power, sweet balance and - heresy I know - enjoyable steering feel. Buy it, wait for the vaccine to be rolled out, jump in and head to Scotland.

Just a quick question, what in the spec denotes the sports Chassis over normal?

£65k-ish.

76% residual after 6 years and 4 owners.
Makes you wonder how long Porsches can keep this up ???

I could be wrong, but I took this - "Sports Suspension (20mm Lower)" to refer to X73.

It does, confirmed by the lack of PASM button mentioned earlier.

From the 2015 price list that I have it's more like £70K.
Make that £71,066 from the spec listed which is not completely correct as it states Sport Techno wheels instead of Satin Platinum Carrera S. Which now makes me think it's had the original wheels replaced and it was actually a press car as mentioned by Twinfan;

I agree but dealers don't seem to have realized that yet. Summer bounce caught them by surprise and they have quickly adopted that as the new normal. Dangerous play IMO

Excellent find!
Leather steering wheel, X73, PCCB and buckets in combination made it very likely to be a press car. Might be cool for someone but equally could put people off.

Not a selling point for me anyway

Yes press car specs tend to be slightly strange as even with all that they omitted essentials (IMHO) such as heated seats and two-zone climate control as mentioned before. Just noticed a few more items on the specification which makes the 2015 list price at least £72,063 and even the Autocar review mentions a build price starting with a 7 back in 2014.

Just another volume car, not a GT or anything special. Unusual market this year as well, Brexit 10% fears and last of the line arguments no longer hold, could the bubble burst?
Personally I’d be hesitant about paying over the odds for a six year old motor. Out of interest what’s the trade value? Dealer Spreads always seem particularly chunky on these, although you’d want a warranty in place if it has been thrashed to buggery by journalists.
For reference, this similar high spec, manual, low miles Boxster went for £48k a few months ago. Missing PCCB and buckets but also ex press
https://www.cameronsportscars.com/vehicle-details/...
Don’t think the price their asking is silly. Not for the amount of fun I’m having anyway
Edited by Devilspoke on Monday 28th December 12:56
I thought based on the spec it could have been a press car! I think the more eagle eyed have probably hit the nail on the head with that one, not sure whether that puts me off or not.
I agree with the price however, it’s toppy its whether dealers realise they’re still riding this wave, I’m ready to move on something, but happy to wait also if it’s not right!

think their cars are worth inflated amounts. What a total shocker...
Things have moved on from a few months ago, that's for sure.
I'd still consider it.
The argument about ex-press cars is familiar to us all; it's been thrashed, or pampered and over-serviced by the Porsche Press team.
I think insisting upon a 111 point check and OPC warranty is perfectly reasonable and the history just adds to that argument.
As for value, I'd pay high forties if it checked out and I wanted a 981 again.
They are more than the sum of their parts, of course they lose out in top trumps comparison but as an overall package they work. Usable power, lots of feel (really), great balance, fun, more speed than you can ever exploit on the road.
If you get them, you get them. If you want to find fault, of course you can.
But I'm a paid up memeber of team "981 and 991 have plenty of steering feel" which probably marks me down.
But when it comes to comparing them to a Golf R, 981 every time. Flat six over turbocharged 4 every day of the week.

Define 'volume car' - there are fewer 981 GTS than there are 981 GT4 and only a quarter of them are manual? Like most people who have owned one, I do think they are special.
I do think 50k is OTT for this example, even though its spec is unique.
There is a 2016 manual in Carmine for sale locally at £55k, but without the buckets/X73/PCCB combo. I'd rather have it.
There's only c.13 981 GTS with PCCB in the UK. I think only max 5 of them had buckets as well as they were not possible to spec after the initial cars in 2014/2015 - I tried to order a new one in late 2015 with PCCBs and buckets and was told it wasn't possible. I managed to find a nice used one instead.
A couple of these came up for sale last year at the same dealer group I dealt with. They hung around for a while - I think PCCBs on non GT cars seems to have a small following.

At closer to £45k be a good buy. Don't think it will get that low. Buckets make the Cayman feel so much more special.
If a buyers gut instinct says go for it then do it.
I think there are some sensible suggestions here in amongst the usual noise, so thanks.
Asking for it to be put through a 111 check is a reasonable ask and then gives the option if you wanted to add a Porsche Warranty on it, but I am sure that the 981 is a pretty reliable old thing.
The debate about ex press and thrashed, could put you off, but I am reliably informed that the press fleet are fastidiously maintained between each test/loan and before they go out of the door to be sold. I think at £47k it would be a good buy, personally, some will agree some will disagree, but I doubt however long it sat there a dealer is going to let it go for £44-45k.

That's no miles for that engine. Put your own buckets in.. customise it...drive it...enjoy it.
As I said, there are other options attracting the marginal buyers agention.
As for the predicted car price falls, they were falling in March/April until government support rolled in around the world. Support like the western world has never seen before. There are more stages of this to play out yet. I nearly bought a 40k mile manual 997.2 for £27k privately in late March. That's what happens when economic sentiment turns. Granted, rarer stuff will hold up though.

What is the age limit for an insurance based warranty of a Cayman, my 20yo son is looking to buy one at around £18k but I'm concerned he could end up with some big bills which he would struggle to pay?
From the same statement of demands and needs;
"1c. My Porsche is less than; 14 years old if applying for a 12 month policy, or 13 years old if applying for a 24 month policy, and the mileage does not exceed 125,000."
So it looks like it's all bets off once the car reaches its 15th birthday or 125,000 miles. However whilst also looking at the warranty wording there is a slight difference which I was surprised at;
"1d. Your vehicle is under 15 years old or a 993 model (excluding 993 model types 911 GT2 and 993 RS)."
Which implies that certain 993's can be warranted regardless of age at least.

1 year’s official Porsche warranty was £660 last time I renewed.
Definitely worth it on a six year old motor imo.
It's only £595 per year if you buy two years at once but you are then tied into OPC servicing.
If its had FPSH you can renew the warranty after a 111 check. After that you are free to service where ever you like without voiding the warranty as long as Porsche parts are used (Did this with the Macan). However if you want to renew the warranty after having non Porsche servicing they require you to have a Porsche Major Service done. When buying used I think its worth getting a warranty, I brought my last 981 GTS pretty much new ish and once the warranty expired I did not renew it. The Macan was 3 years old when purchased from Porsche, after 2 years I decided not to renew the warranty and thats being serviced at Indi at under half the cost with parts from my local OPC.
Not sure if things have changed due to CV19 but when I renewed the extended insurance backed warranty for my 981CGTS in October the requirement for the 111 point had been dropped provided the car was still within its warranty period. Furthermore I had to sign a statement of demands and needs, which is also referenced in the warranty wording itself, which has the following clause;
"1e. I understand that I am committing to having my Porsche maintained and repaired at a Porsche Centre or Authorised Service/Repair centre for the duration of the Warranty Policy."
I would not want to risk a declined warranty claim due to servicing outside the OPC network. I also think that OPC servicing is a bit of a rip-off but £595 for a year's warranty on a Porsche Cayman/Boxster that could be up to 14 years old and mileage not exceeding 125,000 to be very good value for money. I take the view that they give with one hand and take with the other but that the overall cost of OPC servicing and warranty is not not too bad all things considered. Others will no doubt see it differently.
Maybe things have changed, but this year our Macan was still under warranty but serviced by and Indi, parts ordered from our local OPC. PCM was swapped out under warranty.

What is the age limit for an insurance based warranty of a Cayman, my 20yo son is looking to buy one at around £18k but I'm concerned he could end up with some big bills which he would struggle to pay?
If he's not going into Porsche ownership with a bit of a war chest maybe there's better cars to be buying at 20. Just being realistic.
I’d say well done to whoever bought the car, looks like a cracking Cayman for late £40k’s to me.
Hope it’s someone on here so we get more pics and a write up!
It wasn't me no, it was up for about 2 months in total, I'm too indecisive right now that's for sure! Think i've turned to looking for a 997 C2S I can fettle with and make my own!
^^^ Gen 1 or 2.
I've noticed s few Hartech rebuilt gen 1's come and go on AT the last month. A recent black looked particularly good but looks like it sold. I still think a good gen 1 would make a good mod platform. The non DFI engines have their issues but sound/character isn't one of them!
Hi Andy, yeah you're right, been looking at Gen1's and probably some of the ones you have mentioned that have had rebuilds. There was also a Blue one with Portiacraft that at 65,000 had come back clean and generally looked very tidy, plus they would guarantee a fund a large portion of the rebuild it were to happen. Went back to look again and that had sold too. people are obviously a little less hesitant than me and good stuff is still selling that's for sure.
Pretty sure my mind is made up now though for me 997 C2S Gen1, BBS CH-R's, Ohlin's R&T and probably some cats and a nice exhaust, just waiting for the right one. I don't think Gen2's in manual are worth the roughly 20k premium they command right now.
I found this photo online though and I think it looks awesome.
^^^ Yes, earlier when I was toying with the idea of jumping from Cayman to 911 I came to the conclusion Hartech rebuilt 997.1S was for me. That was when they were floating about for sub £20k too...
Did you see the black private one on AT that looked like it had EVERYTHING done but they were asking nearly £30k. I'd assumed it would sit and someone would snap up at £25k but it's gone...
I didn't no, I can't do black cars so they don't appear in my searches, but I have seen similar. Expect to see a thread on that subject by me soon though I think!
Nice 981 Boxster GTS approaching the 40k barrier, low mileage too.

Good to see these coming down in price.

been watching these - this one is low mileage I agree but lacks spec and has a near 4 year gap in services

I think that one has absolutely no paid for options whatsoever!

In the 3.5 years between services it's done 3,500 miles. I wouldn't worry about it as I assume it's just been sat in a garage, kept mint and waiting for the next owner to enjoy it.

Exactly, who needs options on a GTS - it's a high spec regardless with PASM, PTV/LSD and Chrono as standard.
PTV is not standard on the GTS - it was an £890 option when new. Interestingly this one doesn't look like it even has PSE as there's no button for it.
Agree you could argue it's got all you need but it may be hard to shift if the need arose in the future

Well spotted to see the lack of PSE button. Makes me wonder whether it was an import from a Far East RHD market, seen them before, as it's technically not UK spec.

I was torn between spending the extra on a GTS over a well specced S
In the end I went for a well specced S - deposit put on one yesterday at OPC Hatfield
It's a 2012 1 owner PDK car with 20k miles in GT silver with black leather (full OPC history with supplying dealer)
Spec includes:
Extended leather
Sport chrono
Sport design wheel
PASM
PSE
PTV
PCM
Mobile phone prep
BOSE
Sports seats plus
Heated seats
Park assist front/ rear
Folding mirrors
Rain sensor
2 zone climate
20" Sport Techno alloys
I think the only thing missing is cruise which I will likely get added
It was £35k with major service just done, new discs/pads and front end respray for stone chips
Hopefully I got a reasonable deal?
Perhaps it didn't sell after all;

Just seems to have gone to another dealer. Although its regained its Sport Techno alloy wheels along the way.

Likely the one The Stig ragged around the Top Gear track?

Wonder if he signed the dash
Thanks for that - I wonder which way that effects the value
1:21 lap time - wow. I've never watched a lap entirely from the cockpit. Makes you realise what a great driver he is and how fast some of those corners approach - now understand why it's called the 'follow through'
Must have been a standard press car spec, there's an Evo review hooning it around the track at Bedford. 65 plate though

That's quite playful! Lovely bit of lift-off oversteer.
