I was following an interesting thread over at bobistheoilguy.com where a 996 M96 owner was switching to a HDEO for its anti foaming properties.
Howerver after more research this type of oil, used in heavy duty trucking, with LONG drain intervals and HIGH mileage it has other important properties such as high moly and ZDDP. I thought, where have I heard that, of course its in the Joe Gibbs DT40 engine oil I've been using for my last 3 oil changes! I change oil every 5-6000 miles and only use synthetic (Group 3 or 4)

This new oil is for a new API spec but meets everything Porsche specified in their Mobil 1 0W-40 minus the Porsche certification (don't use it under warranty!) I ran M1 0W-40 for two disappointing 10k oil changes and sent the oil to Blackstone for testing. Both times they came back with much higher than normal wear metals. So then I switched to JG DT40 and immedietely the next 2 UOA's came back with much lower wear metals. I'll post up my UOAs from 60k to 110k where I am at now. The M1 OW-40 also made the engine sound rougher than the DT40.
While I like the DT40, I didn't like the $120 it cost to mail order it. I want to do an oil change using a local store so I can do it *right now*, don't have to store it, and don't feel bad bringing the used oil back to a store I didn't purchase oil from.
I planned on going with DT40 yet again but read some negative UOAs people who know a lot more about oil commented on, mostly that it was acting as a 30W oil after shearing at 5000 miles, I was going to switch to 5W-40 Liquimoly from NAPA Auto Parts, but then found they don't sell the true synthetic available in Germany here in the US. No need to pay for "MADE IN GERMANY" if its not really the same thing.
After reading this thread on Delo 400 5W-40 and finding out its only $19 a gallon at Walmart, I figured tomorrow's oil change will be that. I picked up 2 gallons of the stuff and after running it for 5000 miles I'll drain it and compare it to DT40 in my 2007 M97 Cayman's previous oil changes. I suspect Lubrizol, who makes Joe Gibbs DT40 blend, just uses their HDEO diesel engine oil formula and repackages and marks it up twice what it should cost.
Enough speculation, lets see how the results come out 6 months from now. I still have the current DT40 oil in the car and will send that out tomorrow for testing.

shop. Not as cheap as the delo you are looking at but another option.
I rather expected more responses to this. As I enter retirement, I will have time and energy to do work myself and to think about options such as this. On the face of it, for a 10-year-old car far out of warranty, I see no negatives to this option. After all, these fleet vehicles are expected to travel hundreds of thousands of miles. The Delo 400 LE seems to check all the boxes - and much cheaper than DR40 or Motul.

Following this thread. I track my
Cayman
and do an oil change after 3 DE weekends. I've been using Motul oil and wouldn't mind switching to a lower cost oil provided it offered appropriate protection.
One note on my change, I used Delo 400
XSP
but you are even better off using their previous formula Delo 400
LE
.
The difference between those is the XSP is more enviromentally friendly as it has less Zinc, which hurts catalytic convertors, but protects your engine better, DT40 has lots of this, the older LE has higher levels and they are trying to phase out. The old standard was API CJ-4 and the new is API CK-4. These are still both going to be better than M1 0W-40 though. Let's see how the tests come out in another 5 months when I test the XSP and if someone else runs LE run it for 5,000 miles and lets compare.
Either way I think this oil or any heavy duty truck oil, CJ-4 or CK-4 is going to be great for the M97 engines.
Interestingly, LE seems easier to find, at least for now.

results from Blackstone Labs is in, I shortened the interval just a bit, which they noted lowered the iron, but I would say its a 1 for 1 for Joe Gibbs 5W-40. I think this Heavy Duty Engine Oil is prefect for flat six engines. I would like to get some LE version while its still available over the XSP just to stockpile which has more moly than the new XSP I used.
