Turn the key on my
987.2 Cayman
(160k miles) and engine won’t start but get a click click click click sound. What could that be?
Please forgive me if I'm stating what may seem obvious, but I've been there and asked this forum the same question. In my case, the answer was a dead battery. Eliminate that as a possible cause would be my first suggestion.
+1. How old is the battery? Alternatively, how long had the car been sitting? Do you use a battery maintainer?
Battery is about 4-6 years old. It is an aftermarket, not sure brand. Replaced the OEM battery that came with the car. Car had been sitting for less than a day. I do not use a battery maintainer.
My son, who is the primary driver now, said it had done this before recently, but he was able to start it. Should I try to jump it, and if that works, I’ll know it’s the battery?
If you don't have one, get a multitester. Easy way to check batteries (an lots of other electrical devices) and less risk than jumping. Four to six years is getting towards the end of a battery's life.
Keep us posted on what battery you buy. Also, has anyone installed the lightweight Braille battery in their daily driver?
Luckily YoungTurk has a 987-2 which doesn't require any magic mojo from a dealer to reset/recalibrate. There's many threads discussing common sized replacements. Last time ( 2 yrs ago) I went with this
AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery, Group Size H8, 900A CCA
. The extra power also solved a problem I had with OEM. My Pioneer NAV would reboot (due to voltage drop) if I restarted the engine while it was playing.
AFA Braille in a daily driver - not much call for that. You'll never notice the weight difference except in competition. There's a couple threads discussing that too.
Many thanks to all who responded, especially RSchwerer.
Yes, it was the battery. Replaced at Advanced Auto Parts.
All is good.
P.S. I told my son to take better care of his (my?) car.
Singletrack - you were right on the money, thanks.
