I know the levels are read from the dash but not having owned the
boxster
a week yet I was wondering..... is the sensor/sender in the middle of the sump, forward or rear. Cos this will determine if the reading is low or high depending if parked facing up or down hill!
Park the car on a flat surface after running the engine enough (it may take up to 10 minutes) before shutting it off to take the sensor reading. It should read one bar low if it is completely full. (If you try to add some oil to make the top bar fill-in you may get a warning that the engine is too full of oil to run so accept the one bar low as optimum level).
Cool understand that. Maybe that's why it said reading in 55 minutes cos I didn't let the engine run long enough, but curious, where is the sensor?
The key to getting a consistent oil reading is check the oil consistently in the same level spot. The car has to be up to temperature, turn the car off, wait 1 minute and check the level.
If you open the trunk you won’t be able to get a reading as the car thinks you just added oil.
I have never had a problem checking my oil and in fact it usually reads once I’m driving assuming the car is up to temp.
I check my oil after every ride.
987 is not as sophisticated a system as on the
981
. Doesn't read when in motion, not connected to the hatch being opened or not, and generally requires longer to get a reading after shutting the engine off.
But sorry I can't shed any light on the question by the OP, as to where in the sump the oil sensor reading is taken.
Well I changed the oil and Filter and added the correct amount but I cannot get the reading to be one bar.
It shows 1 bar flashing on level ground and only 2 bars when on an incline.
How accurate are these electronic level sensors?
How much oil did you add?
The specified amount with filter change of 7.75 Litre
You're likely close to it showing on the meter. Add a few ounces, wait a couple of minutes and check the level. Repeat as necessary. I just went through this with my '07 and it doesn't take much to go from a flashing lower bar to halfway on the gauge.
That much oil in my car will show full (all but the top bar above the triangle) or one bar below full on level ground. If one bar below full it would typically take only a few ounces to bring it to full. To add the complete amount of oil and have it show low, bottom bar flashing, seems unusual.
It's been a while but I recall that it's about a liter of oil from the bottom bar lit to all but the top bar lit. Should be in the FAQ. I'd be hesitant to add this much more oil over what you've already put in without verifying the amount.
The electronic gauge on my car seems accurate and consistent. At least as much as can be verified without a dipstick. It sounds like you may have a bad sensor.
I did not see a deep sump listed on your modification list. When you changed the oil and filter, was there a spacer between the engine block and the bottom of the sump? You might have a deep sump oil pan. I check my oil on every startup in the morning, usually takes 6 seconds to read before engine turn over.
No deep pan sump.
Today I fuelled up at a different petrol station and it must have been spot on level cos I got a reading of 1 bar!
I'll give it a splash more. It must have had about 8+ Litres in when I changed it out as it was reading half way up on my drive which has a slight gradient.
