Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was not aware you could get a 3.8L in the 911. I have found a 2005 with asking price of $42,991. It has 46,000 miles. My question is does anyone know if this engine has the same IMS, RMS issues, or anything else I should know about. I really like the car and its close by in Houston. I cant believe how hard it is to find the right 911 but I will keep looking if you guys think these engines are no better designed than the 3.4 and 3.6. Thanks again. http://www.porschewest.com/used/Pors...8f07808e9c.htm

POST 2Original post

You can get a 3.8L in a 911, but not in a 2005 model to my knowledge. I could be wrong. It's possible that the engine has been changed. It does still have the same potential for IMSB and RMS issues as previous engines.

POST 3Original post

Nice car. ALL the 996 and 997.1 NA engines are derivatives of the M96 engine and all have an intermediate shaft. SO, the possibility - even if it's VERY SMALL, does exist for IMSB and RMS issues but these are easily solved with aftermarket replacement bearings and updated RMS from Porsche respectively.

POST 4Original post

According to edmunds.com or kbb.com, the 2005 S came with a 3.8L engine. At 45000 miles the RMS has probably been sorted but IMS risk (whatever you place that at) remains. Assuming the car is on its original clutch, you'd be looking at a clutch replacement "soon" (10K-20K miles based on when others report doing clutch jobs), and you can retrofit aftermarket IMS at that time for not much more than the cost of the part, since you've done most of the labor to get to the clutch. Car looks nice but appears 10%-15% overpriced per the above sites' pricing calculators. Good luck and happy hunting

POST 5Original post

Got it. I didn't think the 3.8 was available until the 997.2 was launched.

POST 6Original post

I could be mistaken, but I don't believe the car qualifies for the IMSB retrofit becasue of a larger bearing and case redesign. Jake would know best. It is a 2005 997.1. My dealer did install a crate motor in a 2005 because of IMSB failure. it was one of the 3 failure they have had in the past 5 years. If the IMSB issue causes undue stress, hold out for a bit and pick up a 2009.

POST 7Original post

2005-2008 Carrera S Model 997 were all 3.8 L with 355 HP. 2009 saw the introduction of the 997.2 or Gen 2 models where the 3.8 L went to 385 HP. The M96 water cooled engine from 1999 996 model to 2008 997 has the same possible IMS issues. The 997.2 engine is a new design which supposedly addressed the issues. I am not a mechanic but I have had it explained and read about the differences. Also, in the past five years, I have owned a 2002 Carrera X51, 2003 Turbo, 2005 Carrera S, 2007 Carrera 4S, 2006 Carrera S Cab, and a 2009 Carrera S 997.2. My 2001 Carrera Stock H has a new 3.4 L reman motor that is 4 years old and was purchased when they went for $8200. Now I am told they go for $18000. If you can afford the 997.2 that is where I would go if looking for a 997. BUT having just purchased my recent 1997 Carrera 993 I must say I love this car more than any of the water cooled newer cars I have owned. A pure joy to drive. Still keeping the water cooled track car. They are all a joy! Have fun

POST 8Original post

We have found very good success with the 997.1 MY05 through MY08 M97 engines (3.8 liter). They put out 355 HP in normal configuration--381HP with the X51 option. The bearing is larger than that found in the M96 engine (3.6 liter) which is essentially that found in the 996 models through MY05 (like the AWD cars then). Recall that the 997 version of the "911" was introduced in Model Year 2005, even though there were still a few models of the 996 made for MY05.

Misinformation. 3.6L and 3.8L use the same IMSB. Early MY05 cars, 3.6 and 3.8, use small single-row IMSB carried over from 996. Some time in MY05 Porsche went to a much larger single-row IMSB. The dates are different for 3.6 and 3.8 and not definitively established. There are threads on the 997 forum discussing it. The earlier IMSB can be retrofitted with LN ceramic by separating the transmission from the engine, the later IMSB requires teardown of the engine itself.

That is correct. The reman I purchased in 2009 has the internal IMS bearing which, according to my mechanic, can not be replaced without breaking apart the case. He says this is a good thing.
