The main issue is finding a convenient local place that can cope with the GT3s centre-lock wheels and which can be trusted not to damage the PCCBs when they remove and replace the wheels.

Overall it wasn't their finest hour - when I picked it up from service the first time having paid a bill including tyres they hadn't fitted new ones.

MP4Ss are totally superior to Cup 2s for all aspects of road driving when cold and/or wet..I have fitted a new set to my Ferrari and they are magic in the wet/cold..They supposedly overheat too easily during hard track driving so need to do shorter stints as already mentioned..I intend to fit MP4Ss on my 991.2GT3 RS next Autumn to avoid another mishap like i had in the snow in February.

I have a set of a Cup2s on my 991.2 GT3 that need changing in the next few weeks, and I'm considering putting PS4S on it. Probably 90% road use and 10% track so far, although obviously 100% road right now.
Does anyone have any experience of PS4S on a GT3? (Chris Harris seems to rate them...)
Thanks!
Not had much first hand experience, but I have a trusted friend who’s run SuperSports and then more recently 4S on his for years. He think they’re great. They warm up more easily, ride a touch softer and cope with colder conditions better. The only downside is that they’d overheat on track. But keep sessions under 15mins and you’d probably be fine.

Thanks both. Best case scenario would be two sets of wheels with Cup2s for track, but my wife is insisting that two new bathrooms is a higher priority...
Interesting discussion - have been wondering about doing the same on my 991.1 GT3 when the time comes.
No question that Cup2's are far superior in the dry on track but with a trip to Spa and the RIng (really any time of the year!) I'd far rather hedge by bets on MPS4S and compromise on ultimate dry weather pace as a trade for the confidence of running whatever the weather.
I have recently put a set of 4S's on my Cayman GTS and they are very impressive - have Supersports on other cars and they're just a good.
Not sure whether Porsche would have an issue with 4S's on the GT3 given it wasn't OE spec?

My “winter wheels” for my 991.2 GT3 arrive next month and this is precisely what I’ll be doing. They’re not a frippery is a necessity for safe use of the public highway....

A pissing contest, where function (safety when it's pissing down) wins over form (prettier pissing rooms).
I have them on my 997.1 4s but I believe they will be good for about 3 laps of a track before going greasy (from reading only) and that you need Cups for the track.
Im looking to get another set of wheels and put Nanking AR1 or Toyo r888r s on them for the track. These are cheaper than the Michellins and will do 4-6 track days.

In terms of lifespan PS4S are good for at least 100 laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife according to the guy that runs Apex (they run them on their M3 taxi). That would be a lot of single laps (rather than sustained use) but it is a long lap.

Taffy. What sort of road mileage only would you expect to get from MP4Ss? Thinking of a set for my 981 GTS.

Seems like a compromise is needed. One new bathroom, one set of wheels.

My MPS4S lasted less than 3 track day’s on my 991.2gt3, by the afternoon of the 3rd Track day the cords were showing on the fronts and rears were well battered, the fronts were also switched after the 1st day to even wear.
Short sessions and tyre pressures were adhered to over them 3 day’s too.
I can’t drive for toffee either so its not an result in me pushing car and tyres to the limit.
if you cannot drive very well to a high level with all PSM off, it's maybe that which kills your tyres, understeering into bends on a road bias geo and letting electrics sort the car out kills fronts.
many use PS4S on the ring due to bad weather and they can do >100 laps no issue.
goto any track day and most noobs have bent and over heated front tyres and very hot rear brakes., its easy to see the cars driven bad on track and then visit them In the pits and look at the sorry state of the tyres and brakes !!!. more so as it happends in PDK cars.

You may find 991.2 GT3 is not yet on the approved list for N0 PS4S. This could affect warranty issues. Worth checking first.

MPS4S was on road bias / stock geo and total novice.
Now on Cup2s with set up via JCR, still a novice..
Have been doing Short sessions no more than 5/6 laps then min of 2 cool down laps without touching brakes, even went into car park at Donny on Monday and drove around cooling car without using brakes.
Was around 2.0bar hot all around all afternoon after first out lap each session , started day at 1.7bar cold in the morning....not sure where that is to the track gurus but felt ok and pressures consistent all day..
Ta.

Anyone who saw Chris Hoy at Oulton in March will verify how quick PS4S are..
You will enjoy your car more of the time with them on. Warm dry days aside.
Lowndes is indeed correct, well worth checking with your Porsche Centre first if extended warranty is planned. My 991.2 GT3 was in last week for 2 year service and warranty extension, the original Dunlops were worn and I asked for P4S as a replacement. They checked and, while the P4S is N0 rated and can be used on other Porsches, it's not on the Porsche approved list for the GT3.
The GT3 list at the moment is the Dunlop or the Cup 2, hopefully the P4S will appear on the list in the future but my Porsche Centre couldn't confirm that (although they did say the P4S was a very good tyre).
Why did you extend your warranty ? It’s not due for another year if it’s a two year warranty.
The point about warranty is a good one. One of the reasons that having two sets of wheels is good
From what I know Porsche don’t retrospectively homologate tyres so PS4S may not ever be allowed under warranty. Certainly the case with 997’s there are much better tyres now than what’s N rated.
Yes, I think you're right about 2 sets of wheels being the ideal solution!
I extended the warranty now as they included the 111 point check with the 2 year service, the next warranty renewal will coincide with the 4 year service and so on.....
I run a 991.2gt3 and have swapped from cup2’s to 4s’s. Definitely a good move for me. Occasional track use but plenty of road use in all weathers. 4s’s are great.
Got Porsche to fit them and they didn’t say a word about warranty.
Swapped my cup 2s to MP4S straight away on my old GT3 Superb tyre for the real world where it’s often wet and cold and you aren’t constantly thinking about tyre temps.

Oh that’s smart. I on the other hand just had the two year service done on two cars and didn’t do that....I guess next year I’ll be buying a one year warranty then!

But normally the warranty falls due after 3 years when there’s no service required, unless you’re talking about an older model?
Cup 2's are a very, very good track biased tyre that is more than acceptable for any road use.
However, if you do not intend of tracking the car more than once a year, just fit road tyres and accept they're a compromise when you do visit a circuit.

Yes...that’s ,y point sort of. My car will have to go to the OPC next year just for the 111 point check and the warranty extension. So I’ll do the warranty for a year so it then ties in with the service visits every two years.
If anyone needs fronts for a 991 gt3 I have a spare set of Michy pilot sport cup 2 N1 245/35/20 , were only used on the road (no track work) briefly and both have over 5.5mm tread remaining..
For those (like me) interested in moving from either the Dunlop or the Cup 2 track day tyre to a more road-biased tyre with better wet weather performance, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S N0 is now on the approved tyre list for the GT3.

Coincidentally, I emailed my OPC at the weekend to enquire about the Pilot Sport 4S and whether it was on the approved list for the Porsche warranty. I had provisionally agreed to replace the tyres on my car for the new Cup 2's, but given it will be 99% road use (despite what i promise myself every year about taking it on track), it makes sense to go for something with better all-weather ability.
Should save about £50 per corner too!

I have a rear Cup Sport 2 which has decent tread which is available if anyone wants to collect - it came off my car when I had a puncture and chose to buy two new tyres.

My OPC wouldn't price match, but they did knock about 10% off their original quote for 4x Cup2s earlier this year.

Excellent news – thank you!
I get the impression that 'N0' Pilot 4S might be in short supply (in GT3 sizes at least) - I had quotes from 2 separate OPCs, both provided similar quotes which were almost the same price as the Cup 2's, whereas online companies show the 4S as around 20% cheaper.

Won’t OPC fit your supplied tyres ?..
Otherwise find a good local place or mobile guy that does them, Camskill usually beats most places and BlackCircles have offers on now and again
Btw - re michys, there’s deals on now at £75/£100 quid off for 4 tyres, it’s not much but it’s still money off

OPCs won't fit tyres supplied by someone else.
The main issue is finding a convenient local place that can cope with the GT3s centre-lock wheels and which can be trusted not to damage the PCCBs when they remove and replace the wheels.

Oh,
Your best off finding a local / mobile guy
Where are you based ? As I have the gear to do it, torque wrench, CL alignment tool and paste..
Your welcome to use the gear
Just let me know..
I didn't use them on a GT3, but I had a set of Pilot Super Sports (the predecessor) and a set of Cup 2s for my Lotus evora, and I did track days with them both. My experience was that while the Cup 2s are a "superior" track day when it comes down to outright speed and grip, I actually preferred the Super Sports for the track for one main reason - sensitivity to pressures. The Cup 2s are very very sensitive to tyre pressures, and you are forever adjusting them on a track day. The Super sports have a far larger operating window of pressure, and so you I found they were far more consistent on a track day as you only needed to adjust them once throughout the day. Of course on the road there was no comparison.

I find the reverse with a cup two, 2 bleed downs and you can forget about them all day, really good at keeping stable pressure.

That's very kind, but I'm in the South East and I think you're in the North East?!
you might find this video helpful, especially towards the end when he talks about the Pilot sport 4s specifically. They use the 4s on their GT2RS Ring Taxi. So you can be sure the PS4S are more than capable for track driving.

As the wet tyre of choice ofcourse.
Indeed, I drove my GT3 to my Porsche Centre yesterday for a tyre change from the Dunlop Sport Maxx to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. It was a biblically wet day with flooded roads in places, the return journey was considerably more relaxed than the outbound

No no, he said it is the best tyre for wet hands down, but that they use it dry and wet regardless.

I've driven my Ferrari with MP4Ss K1 on biblical wet roads and these tyres are magical in those conditions.

Can we ban taffy from mentioning his Ferrari in every thread :-)
Every one must know by now he has a Ferrari ....:-p

Thanks for this - very interesting! I’m now more than convinced I’m making the right decision in changing to the PS4S.

To be truthful i've actually got a couple of them in case you're interested..

For those (like me) interested in moving from either the Dunlop or the Cup 2 track day tyre to a more road-biased tyre with better wet weather performance, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S N0 is now on the approved tyre list for the GT3.
Hi, how did you find this out? Is there an online list somewhere? Great news if true!
Hi Christurbo,
Apologies for the delay in replying. Yes, it's definitely true, my dealer (Swindon) got an up-to-date copy of the approved tyre list from Porsche GB.
Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
I'm late to this thread but thought I would share me experience of trying PS4s without knowing it on my GT4. When the car was at the OPC for its service earlier in the year the OPC flagged the front Cup 2s needed replacing (which I knew). The price they quoted was better than I was expected, so I told them to go ahead.
I picked up the car, went for a drive and thought the turn in was a bit sluggish with a hint of understeer that isn't normally there. I put it down to the tyres being brand new.
When I got back home I looked at the tyres and they were PS4s rather than Cup 2s.
Moral of the story is you will feel the difference through the steering even on the road at normal speeds.
Of course, you will also feel the benefit of the PS4s whenever there is a bit of standing water on the road.

Would love a set of PS4S for my 718 Spyder but the 295/30 rears aren’t available. In fact the only choices I can find anywhere that are N rated are Cup2’s, Dunlop Sportmaxx or P Zero’s - which really is a poor selection.

So they fitted PS4s to the front and left the Cup 2s on the rear? If so, someone there needs a good talking to.
Should be fun/lethal in the rain.

basically this. that is pretty unforgivable if they did that.

If a quote from an OPC comes in lower than expected there is usually a catch.

That’s great thanks. I need to wear the Cup2s out now prior to Autumn!!!

Isn’t this a fail on the 111 check for warranty?

It was an error by the OPC. They apologised and fitted the correct Cup2s when I called them. Overall it wasn't their finest hour - when I picked it up from service the first time having paid a bill including tyres they hadn't fitted new ones. They came and collected the car, and then fitted the wrong tyres. At the third attempt I've got the right tyres on it (though they have pointed out it will fail the 111 point check as it has N1s on the front and N0s on the rear - the N0s no longer being available apparently).

the N1 tyre is supposed to be quite a lot grippier and you're still running N0 rears. i have no idea at all if the difference between N spec are great enough to cause a handling difference over and above say simply new fronts vs old rears but it might be something to keep in mind especially as you're going to be having a fair bit more front grip now.

I've done track days at Silverstone and Goodwood with this mix and TBH I didn't feel any difference in the balance from how it's been before - still has understeer as the limiting factor. But my best lap at Silverstone was 2.5s faster than I did last year - some of that was I'm sure me driving it a bit better/harder and getting a couple of completely clear laps, but I would guess some in the tyres also.
Sorry to bump this thread but I'm struggling to find tyre pressure recommendations.
I have PS4s on my GT3 for road. The recommended pressures (presumably for the Cups 2s) are 29/33. After a spirited drive today pressures were 33/36 with sometimes 38 on the rears.
Should the warm temps be around factory recommended? So should I bleed our about 3 psi from the rears?
Any help appreciated thanks.

The pressures advised are for cold tyres normally .

Yup. I switched from Cup2s to PS4Ss on my GT4 over winter and I've kept to the same cold pressures as recommended by Porsche. Both sets of tyres seem to increase by the same 0.2-0.3 bar from cold when driving on the road so I don't see any need to change from the standard pressures.
Advice needed....I was looking to switch to a set of PS4S but got the following reply from the dealer:
'Porsche are unable to supply and fit the tyres due to them having no N rating. I have asked the parts team to quote a price for similar spec in tyres.
The tyres that’s been priced up with the N0 Porsche rated tyres for your size are below.
S2453520YPILSPT4X
S3053020YPILSPT4X'
Does anyone know if that's PS4S's they are talking about or is it a completely different tyre?
Of those of you who have switched between Cup2 and PS4S, did you notice much/any difference in the ride and/or road noise in the cabin.
Previously I swapped PSS to Cup2 and noticed a marginal increase in road noise, but this was a long time ago so not sure how the sidewall technology or construction has come along since in the move from PSS to PS4S. Thanks in advance.

So not sure why the OPC is telling you “computer says no”
Arse covering in case a customer throws it at the scenery and claim that it was Porsche who fitted the wrong tyres??

But they're not the wrong tyre..
They are going to provide a quote for, what looks like an N rated PS4 rather than a PS4S, having said that the PS4S requested isn't N rated. But it is.

Turns out they were quoting for PS4S. Will go ahead and order and see what tyres are sitting there when I turn up at the dealership!
They were quoting £317 for the rears and £251 for the fronts. That's fully fitted. Could save a fair bit ordering from camskil but not sure I trust any tyre fitters up here in the highlands. The car is also going into the dealership for a service.
Have yet to order though as I am now toying with the idea of trading the car in.
I use both Cup 2 and P4S on air-cooled and water-cooled 911. I also have had P4 on air-cooled. Big difference between all three. The P4 you will understeer everywhere. P4S amazingly good for normal tyre and more progressive than Cup 2 but less grippy especially up front. Cup 2 though dialled in feels like the wheels will come away from axel so much G created. 911 feels mid engined on the Cup 2 when warmed up. Almost cheating actually its so grippy can even makes an air cooled feel mid engined and relatively safe if set up correctly.

Has anyone been able to find any Cup 2's lately?
Mine likely to fail its MOT this week so going to have to make a choice on a new tyre
I guess it depends what size you're after. I got some 305/30/19 (N0) Cup 2's last week, but I'm afraid I have no idea where they came from as they were fitted at the same time as having my wheels refurbished. I recall Black Circles were showing stock at the time though.

I've a spare set of Sportmax N1 with good tread if you need something to get you through the test, Though having run a 991.2 with Cup 2's last year through winter and this year a 991.1 with the Sportmax I'm liking the difference in grip in the wet and cold. Probably will look for a set of Cup 2's for summer though.
Located not far from Aylesbury.
