Widened to get fit/offset right and fill the guards.

If I really dig it, and get another car as a daily, then I would toss the whole roll bar n hood, add a single pod/hump and chop the screen/replace with aero screen - and buy some goggles!

So you'd be running 16" steelies Trev, can you even buy 16's?

Clutch did crap itself at the end of the last run though, so me and the boxrod got a lift home..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you have or know of an early Boxster for sale i'm interested.
Must be manual trans.
1st pref is Silver exterior with Boxster Red interior.
2nd Silver with Black interior.
3rd pref Black exterior w red or black interior. Maaaaybe a tan interior at the right price.
Exterior/interior doesn't need to be perfect. Suits me better if not at the appropriate discount.
Don't really care if 2.5, 2.7 or 3.2, but must be driveable and mechanically sound.
Pref in VIC, but will buy the right car interstate.
$10-15K or a little more.
Nah, just completed my hairdressing certificate at Sunshine Tafe. Dad will be so proud!
Ok....A daily driveable project!
Outlaw boxster beater.
Dumped on steelies w fat rubber, stripped interior, retro steering wheel, red low-back spyder seats, loud long single pipe trumpet exhaust, other silly stuff, think modern day RSK/550 - obviously a highly practical daily!
It's this or a early WRX as a runabout. I
should
be more mature than that....but have always wanted one... If the right Boxster doesn't show up soon I'll likely grab a one in the meantime and keep looking.
Yeah I kind of want to do it out of a 1st year 2.5 car preferably. Goes with the ethos of my early 924 which is also very spartan compared to those a few years newer.
And everyone knows I don't need the power!
So you'd be running 16" steelies Trev, can you even buy 16's? Would the offset work to clear callipers etc? and tyres not hit guards? as you'd be running high profile tyres as well I expect and not licorice straps .......and dumping the body ....
The styling of the boxster actually lends itself more to RSK / RS-60 than the 550.
The headlights... so boxster.
The original concept car was so much cooler than the production one...
Look at that exhaust pipe! Awesome!
Wheels would be something custom. Widened to get fit/offset right and fill the guards. Yes to big rubber!
Not sure yet if 15's could be made to work - but hopeful on an early non-S car with smaller brakes.
I've been racking my brain how to do it with those old 356 drum brake style wheels (which are 16") but not sure...I found a guy who did manage to fit them to a BMW of all things by engineering some hub adapters to suit. That would be cool, but a lot easier made out of widened early 911/912 wheels.
Failing that I've found a source for billet alloys in any size that look like steelies - the irony....
Maybe you can get it down to a reasonable price

Thanks James, but Auto...
I know of a reasonably priced silver auto but just don't think it will cut it for driving experience...as much as MrsMcRev thinks it's a good idea!
It will start off as a daily so will keep the screen and hood....for now.
If I really dig it, and get another car as a daily, then I would toss the whole roll bar n hood, add a single pod/hump and chop the screen/replace with aero screen - and buy some goggles!
Below: What I
think
I'll look like at the next SMT...
What I'll
actually
look like!
yeah,
nah
i had a Clubman with a full windscreen which meant it had aero of a brick and would hit an aero wall at 215 km/h. I planned to remove it until another of the clubman guys with an aero screen copped a seagull in the chest at high speed on the main straight at Sandown. Very lucky not to cop serious injury or worse....
Challenge is to beat Magnus to it
I've seen 205 to 130 but not 130 to 205.
This BMW made it work with custom ones...
I't be great to do it with style but i'd be just as happy with regular 5x130 steelies. I would expect them to need modifying/widening etc to get the fitment right.
Or Image Wheels do an alloy in a classic steelie look, in any size.
http://www.imagewheels.co.uk/billet-46-classic-build-alloy-wheel/
I've tracked down a few other 16" 5x130 steel wheels too...
Already underway
let's organise a catchup soon though, be good to bounce some ideas around before firming up a direction. Might take on some rally cab inspiration...
Trev, look what you've gone and started!

Indeed! It's the only one I've found on initial searching when you do a general search for rally boxster. But I have some variations to this theme I'm mulling over... Just hoping prices for base cars stay low for at least another 6 months. So don't get everyone too excited about boxster project cars just yet Trev!
I just spat my coffee through my nose!
Read the first line i'm like "Of course...don't think i've got much choice"
Scroll down "Wait what! They can do that?"
Next thought.... "Nah, that must have a Chev in it...."
Next thought "I hope MrsMcRev doesn't see this....I told her they are slow"
Next thought "wait till I show the kids this!"
not got it home yet, but here's a crappy gumtree pic!
I were going to refer to it as the "Boxrod" but that sounds all kind of wrong....but that's exactly what this is all about, which makes it oh so right!
Update: Just got home from picking up the McBoxRod an hour ago.
Who would've thought a $13000 beater could bring you so much joy!
Not driving for a year brings a new found appreciation for the simple pleasure of driving.
Stoked to be driving and stoked to be driving a Porsche!
One of the perks of buying off a guy who owns an exhaust shop is negotiating a Fister-mod into the deal - the sound is like music to my ears, and it all happens at sensible enough speed that retaining a license shouldn't be that hard!
I drove half the way back along Beach Rd behind this Ferrari and I'm positive I were more happy with my base-spec boxster than they were with their $400k Fezza.
That fezza is the Boxster of the Italian family too so you were practically in the sae car! My vote is is for "boxrod"
this is going to be a fun build and I can already hear the whinging from the ac guys when you monster them on SMTs.
It's a damn fine looking car that's for sure, following him back down from Lake Mountain into Healesville it makes just the right amount of noise yet sticks perfectly to the posted speed limits
I crept up on Trev over Reefton this morning. As soon as the GTS came into view in his mirrors he stepped up his game and peddled a bit faster. It goes alright. Sounds good too.
The guy I bought it off owned an exhaust shop. So I negotiated the mod in to the deal.
Actic Silver, same as my 996 was, but I think the terracotta paving in the pic is showing up in it.
If it wasn't obvious enough, I had a blast driving it today.
Hard to believe you can have that much fun in something so cheap.
It may be down on power, but dare I say it handles "better" than my 911...
By better I mean in the technical sense. The balance of the chassis is spot on.
It was certainly capable of hunting down 911's in the twisties and that's on a 1st drive!
It'll never have that 911 "steer with ya bum" feel a rear engined car gives you though...that is hard to beat!
Mighty 2.5 base spec!
The Wanted thread has been moved here - lets continue the Boxrod story.
After a couple of SMTs and a few weekend solo runs I've gotten to feel it out a bit more. Haven't had a convertible since my CJ7 Renegade when I were about 19...Top down in the winter sun sure is nice.
I've been enjoying just driving it while searching for the parts n pieces I need to give it some "touches".
Here it is in good company ready for its first SMT - the morning after picking it up!
Ps. It's the one on the left.
It's only a sticker, but it's only the beginning...
Steelie mock up. At the time I couldn't get the wheel off - discovered the previous owner had lock nuts but left me with either a very well hidden socket, or none at all. Finally got them removed this week so will be able to test properly now.
Don't know if a 15" will clear brakes...
Yep, alloys. Marc designed them and had them made for the blue car, I believe the owner has painted them black.
Those are a 17" rim, but don't look it which is why I like them. I'll find out how much they were...
Not wishing to blow smoke up your arse, but that slide demonstrates you're used to a car going from under you, most would've panicked and lobbed too much opposite lock on.
Dab of oppo and away ??
If I didn't think the marshals would get upset and start waving flags at me I would've loved cut a whole lap slideways!
The wet made it a good day to explore the cars handling and learn it though.
It should handle much better once I get the broken engine mount & blown rear right shock replaced! Didn't have time before the event.
And the clutch only just made it home...
Yeh they were mentioned at the service it had in the week before... I thought they were put in but found out once there that obviously not!
Might check my invoice...
Ha ha. When you said you reached for the demister, I thought you meant you did it on the straight and missed your braking marker, not missed your turn in. Love it, right in front of the only track marshal!
The Boxrod at Sandown today. First time i've driven there.
Still haven't had time to sort the engine mount, rear suspension or clutch, but figured Fuch it! I'll just turn up and drive anyway.
Early bird gets the garage
Half of the PFA garage gang SimonK, Pork Chops, with TP-993 and Hugh out of shot..
Couldn't find my phone mount last night...so here's a lap with a view of the sky.
Best time for the Boxrod was...In your best Jeremy Clarkson accent...
"You did it......
In One minute.....
Thirty.....
Seven...
.06 seconds!
Happy with that for a wannabe star in a reasonably priced car.
Clutch did crap itself at the end of the last run though, so me and the boxrod got a lift home..
I were just trying to give it the old rev limiter lubrication solution - it's free you just gotta splash the oil around, but alas i will now succumb to peer pressure and do it while there...
I like it that you are tracking it... I think at some point in the near future when I feel like I have achieved what I want in the GT3, a boxster is in my future for some cheap thrills.
After recovering from spending 40% of the vehicle purchase on clutch, flywheel, LN IMS, etc etc, I've just ordered some KW coilovers for the 'rod.
Looking forward to getting them in when they arrive!
And my Momo wheel sampler pack arrived too!
I got 2 x Mod07, 1 in leather and 1 in suede, and a Mod78 in suede also.
I think the leather Mod07 will go in the boxrod, the suede Mod07 in the 924.
The Mod78 is kind of a spare... it would suit a more mid 80's to early 90's car in my opinion.
I guess it could go in the lancer...but if someone wants to make an fair offer on a brand new genuine Momo Mod78 wheel let me know.
Noted that you got a new
LN IMS.
But dont throw the old one away.
W
hen
you get a bit of time on your hands & in a destructive mood; could you cut the old bearing in half and inspect it for internal
wear
?
Your Boxrod is a prime example of the P. cars that buyers are scared of. Curious to know if the old IMS is still good internally or partially worn out.
lol got me bad. I'm like WTF is going on there? That looks weird....then the penny dropped in my tiny mind!
Oh, and this is where your Boxster is heading!
