Anyone hear of this? Called my local dealer to get some front pads for my car, '06 S, with standard brakes, and was told Porsche changed the design on the pads and the old hardware and sensors won't work with the new pads. Asked the guy what changed and why, he wasn't sure said he just had a note in the book that told him things had changed....
Around the late 2007 to early 2008 model years, Porsche changed the design of the front brake pad and the spring clip that goes along with it.
See the explanation here:
Front Brake Pad Set - Boxster S or Cayman S
orsche Parts & Porsche Accessories - Wholesale Porsche Parts & Tequipment - Cayman Panamera Cayenn
You still should be able to get the old 996 style pads that will match your spring clips or you can just get the new clips go with the new style pads. Pad materials should be the same.
As far as the brake sensors go, the sensor wire is routed around the spring clip. I guess the issue is if you go with the new spring clip, the sensor wire will take a longer/shorter path around the spring clip and thus a newer wire would be needed.
I ended up just tying my sensor wires back and just inspect the pads visually for wear going forward.
Thanks. Now why a Porsche parts guy didn't know that is beyond me...
THAT, Sir, is the value of this web site!
Think they changed from 996 to 997 FRONT pads, springs, and sensors during the '06 model year. Only the earliest '06 cars had the 996 front pads/sensors/and the longer spring. Rear pads did not change.
Suncoast
knows all about this if you order pads from them.
Last weekend installed Hawk racing pads on friends CS -- a later version '06 than mine. Hawks would not work with his 997 springs-- had to run over to the Porsche dealer to get the old style 996 longer springs.
Just a side note, I've found that Pagid pads will work with either the 996 or 997 springs because they don't have that notch in the backing plate that the spring clip goes into.
Very helpful info. Pete. Somewhere along the way I' missed this whole event.
Next
year we'll have you make the presentation at Tech. Tactics !
Does anyone have the part number for the 996 type pads. The
Suncoast
site does a great job explaining the difference between the old and new pads but it doesn't tell the part number for the 996 pads. I don't want to buy new springs and wear sensors that would be necessary to switch to the 997 pads if I don't have to.
early style (long spring) front pads using the early sensors for the
Cayman S
and
Boxster S
is part number
996-352-949-03 . Non-S cars use diffrent pads.
In case you want to know what the old and new retainer clips look like, here's a photo from my recent install:
Obviously the old one is the dirty left one, the new one that fits all available pads is the one on the right.
Thanks!! That is what I needed.
With enough web sleuthing, I was pretty sure my 07S was a lucky one equipped with the 996 setup.
I could not find any pictures of what a 997 pad looked like. So here's a few pics of the parts I got from
Suncoast
. Also the Porsche box shows a different PN than the brake pad itself. I also took a picture of the pads assembled off the car to demonstrate the spring clip size. A quick visual check is pretty easy to determine which you have (check the backing plate style or how far the spring clip ends sit mount on the pad) You can see the 997 clip sits completely within the circular posts. The 996 style does not.
I bought aftermarket 997 sensors since they were about $11/each instead of the overpriced genuine $30/each. Made by Sebro as well. See pic.
