Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, here's the story of a 1968 SWB 912 project that's slowly starting. Car bought off gumtree just before Xmas 2016, not pretty but not hiding anything. It was missing; motor, gearbox, axles, seats, front and rear bumpers, front and rear lights, and front guards. needs rust repairs to front slam panel, sills and parcel shelf. also has later engine cover, and has had carerra flares fitted at some time. after getting it home, acquired and fitted steel 1969-73 front guards (larger flare than pre-69), fiberglass S front bumper. All hold on with zip ties for dummy fit up. now just have to decide to build as hot rod retaining rear flares, or stock looking (requiring new front and rear guards)

POST 2Original post

Personally. Hot rod it! It's way past any originality, so go nuts I reckon. Know someone looking for  a decklid too! ?

POST 4Original post

I think it looks great as is (with a front guard tho obviously, and lowered) paint it up and get it going!

POST 6Original post

Hot rod will be much more fun to build and drive

yes, I picked up a 2.0 flat six out & 901 5 speed with axles out of Sydney, also purchased a weber style efi set up. have most of interior now replacing sports steering wheel with standard steering wheel replacing 912 gauges with period correct 911 gauges (thanks for the speedo Russ). bought some autotechnica low back sports seats also purchased 15x4.5 fuchs for front now just chasing an oil tank, and then rust repair panels

POST 9Original post

Looks like so many people are going for EFI conversions now. I'm yet to see one run. Do the porsche purists frown on it, or is it an acceptable mod?

POST 10Original post

Cool, I remember seeing that one on gumtree, watching with interest.

POST 11Original post

many run. usually better than stock haha.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

working out what bits I need to get, a crank trigger (like the clewett engineering kit for 2.0 & 2.2) and a ecu (probably haltech) to go with the TWM injection system http://www.clewett.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_23&products_id=22 exhaust system, has anybody tried the OBX stainless headers from ebay usa? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OBX-Exhaust-Header-Fits-65-66-67-68-69-70-71-72-73-74-Porsche-911-RSR-Flat-6-/122272027811?epid=1247237362&hash=item1c77fb14a3:g:zOsAAOSwEetV~JVM

POST 13Original post

Can't comment on their headers but I did buy the cat delete for mine, it fitted and for the money was fine for me. The finish was not as pretty as it looked in the pics.

POST 14Original post

For the money it's not all that much more to get custom stuff made, and it's a heap better. Check the exhaust thread in the aircooled section, I recently had some made. If they are of interest I can send you the fab guys details.

I saw Uncle's run (the two different cars) It has so many benefits I'm not sure it'd sit well with the purists but that wouldn't matter to me

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 223618

Just out of curiosity, why 4.5 in Fuchs on the front?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 224351

I keep flip flopping between narrow body or hotrod, lately I'm leaning towards getting the correct front and back narrow guards, then having it sitting low over 15x4.5 fronts and 15x6 deep 6's fuchs on the back. Bit of a bugger because I've also bought four new Porsche pattern fat minilites for the hotrod build, and narrow body means more bodywork. have picked up a set of dansk replacement sills off gumtree this week, still lots of parts to source.

POST 18Original post

4.5's will leave you with a 165 tyre. You already have 4 steelies, why not just get the rears widened.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 224358

You interested in selling the minilites then?

POST 20Original post

pics of the minilites? could find them a new home.. edit: beaten by hugh haha

got it off Geoff in Camden :-) yep, I will be having a garage sale once the car is running, selling off whichever wheels I don't use, panels (fiberglass long hood, 73 rs front and rear bumpers), sports steering wheel, 912 gauges, etc agree, at the moment that's the plan

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not much 912 progress in last weeks, next steps are exhaust, ecu and oil tank to get it running. Just finishing off an old ford falcon resto-mod

POST 27Original post

Nice I'm in bris to. Keen to see what you make you make of it. I hope you got it for a good price from what he was asking and good job on finding parts so quickly. where in bris are you?

bought oil tank today, next is exhaust system then start bodywork

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

have purchased correct early guards (1965-68) and metal rear bumper (centre panel), now just chasing SWB rear bumper end pieces before bodywork can commence

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

today ordered swb rear quarters to replace flared ones currently fitted, now to get SWB rear bumper end pieces

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

have obtained swb headlights, the parts buying continues

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

new SWB rear quarters ordered mid November have arrived, now chasing 911 engine shroud and tinwear to get car running before the body and paint commences

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

edging closer as engine tinwear organized through 'thesamba.com" classifieds, have bought quite a few parts from one seller on there who is happy to post to Australia, all parts he's sent to date have been well priced and described accurately https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=hencar progress on 912-6 has been slow as I try to get the ford falcon project done http://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/201299/1983-ford-falcon-group-replica next step is fan shroud, get car running, weld on any brackets needed, cut off any brackets etc not needed and then commence body and paint

POST 36Original post

Love the greens tuff falcon.   I know a guy with a fox body mustang letting it sit without being fixed and so tempted to buy it off him and make a DJR racing mustang replica.  Would be a very cool track car.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 242216

do it, its very cheap to build in comparison to Porsche, and sourcing parts from jegs or summit is quick and easy

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

more parts buying, now have 911 engine tinwear, correct early engine cover (thanks chris) and just bought SWB rear bumpers. now chasing plastic engine cooling shroud, early front bumper and some spare time to start piecing it all together :-)
