The 996 GT-2 and GT-3 were never offered with PSM, and only one 996 model, the Anniversary in model year 2004, was ever fitted with PSM and a mechanical limited slip differential (LSD), but it was a special low level 22/27% knock version.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Question: Does PSM freak anyone else out when it kicks in, or am I doing it wrong? When the suspension gets light while cresting during a rising turn, PSM thinks I'm understeering and hits the inside front brake, scaring the crap out of me and attempting to point the car at the nearest wall. This is my first 911 and first car with PSM, so I'm not sure how much it is excessive nannying, or if I'm really not driving correctly and it feels like I'm in immediate danger of dying. I took this corner at 1.5x the speed in my Boxster for years without feeling that I was on the ragged edge of fiery death. Should PSM be disabled for anything except the most conservative driving, or do I need to really dial back the speed entering turns, much moreso than I needed to in the Boxster? Obligatory pic of my "new" baby:

POST 2Original post

I've never had the PSM on my car do anything like that. In general, I've only heard people say that it has helped save their bacon on rare occasions. Sounds like something is going on other than a properly functioning PSM.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After reading up on the system, the behavior it's exhibiting is correct, but it seems overly sensitive. I'll bounce it off my indy next week...

I can't speak to how the C2 is equipped, but my C4 sports PSM.

Ummm... he said that the car is a C4, not a C2... I have never felt the PSM kick in except in really rainy, icy or snowy conditions. I think that it is rare that it would engage even under normal spirited driving. A couple of years ago I when I first got my C4, I took it out in about 4 inches of fresh snow and played with the PSM. I can tell you that the PSM made all the difference in the snow! At low speeds with it off, the car was very unpredictable. With it on, the car was a delight to drive. Incidentally, the C4 is one of the best snow cars around, with proper tires (except for clearance) and I am sure that I will now get death threats from WRX owners...

POST 9Original post

The 911 is slower in and faster out than the Boxter. PSM will kick in in the situation you describe, but if you turn it off in that situation you need to be ready for the rear-end to swing around on you. With all the weight in the rear, if the rear gets light in a turn, it will want to come around on you. Simple physics. The key is to keep downforce on the rear through a turn. My suggestion is to keep the PSM on until you get used to the new dynamics. It will tell you when you are doing it wrong.

POST 10Original post

From "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion" page 299: PSM was originally installed as standard in the model year 1999 996 Carerra 4 Coupe and Cabriolet models only. However, it was available as an option for the rear wheel drive Carrera model range (option M476), but the cost was prohibitive because, along with the PSM system, came a different engine, e-gas and a new engine management software version. PSM was a standard installation only for all-wheel drive 996 models be they normally aspirated or turbocharged. The 996 GT-2 and GT-3 were never offered with PSM, and only one 996 model, the Anniversary in model year 2004, was ever fitted with PSM and a mechanical limited slip differential (LSD), but it was a special low level 22/27% knock version. So there you have the information!

POST 11Original post

PSM does spooky things... Ive said this since I first started tracking my car. The first thing i do before i leave the pits is switch it OFF. High speed sweepers can trigger the brakes if the car begins to push a little. That being said, Ive never felt PSM adjust the brakes while driving on the street.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 9905272

Agreed! When I forget to disable PSM on the track I am reminded very quickly! I never notice on the street except for when I get a new set of front or rear tires. Last time I got new fronts the PSM was very sensitive and kicking in on one specific low speed turn on my work commute. It stopped after getting a few miles on the new tires though.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is this degree of threadjacking common here? If so, I'm gonna have to learn to self-medicate before every visit.

Thanks for the comments. San Diego Region is doing their annual performance driving school. I signed up a couple of days after I bought the car - I want to spend as much time as possible on the skidpad getting a feel for how the 911 rotates compared to the Boxster. With PSM off in the same spot, I can feel the car's urge to rotate, but it doesn't feel anywhere near letting go. That said, I'll stay on the safe side until I get used to having the motor hanging out back. The tires I'm currently running (I don't have the specs handy) have essentially no sidewall. They definitely make the ABS twitchier than it was in my Boxster, even in low-speed straight-line braking. A cigarette butt or gum wrapper is enough to make the ABS perk up with these wagon wheels...
