Did a search and couldn't find this so I figured I would ask the question. For those who have a 2005-2012 Boxster or Cayman what type of motor oil are you using?
Thanks
Amsoil 5W-40, recommended by my shop.
Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40. Pennzoil Ultra is the favorite new oil over at bobistheoilguy.com and the Euro 5W-40 is Porsche A40 certified.
What does this mean exactly?
My indy shop uses elf as it's default brand, but will use others. I'm getting my oil changed tomorrow, so I just started to do a bit of research myself.
I did find
THIS TEST
, but I think it's fairly dated at this point. Royal Purple killed it. Valvoline was a close second.
Mobil1 0-40wt Euro Blend - If it's good enough to be the factory fill, it's good enough.
I've been a Mobil 1 0W-40 guy for some time. It's what Porsche puts in the race cars! But I'm considering Redline 5W-40. It has a higher HTHS rating than M1 0W-40. There is some speculation that the low HTHS rating in M1, along with the lower zinc and phosphorus content, plays a role in the whole "oil starvation, spin bearing #6 issue." The idea is that the better oil will protect the bearings better during a momentary drop in oil pressure. I'm not sure I buy into that, but there it is.
^^^ Good to know. The article came up through a google search of elf oil as I'd never heard of it before. I'm of the mindset that the frenquency of oil & filter change is of much greater importance than the brand of oil used.
I'll be getting my second oil change at 3900 miles tomorrow. The first was at 1900. I've had three track days between now and then.
As much as I hate to feed an "oil" thread, I will. Went to get Castrol Syntec 5w40 today and found new bottles of "Edge" mixed in. The Edge has an SM rating. Does that mean reduced Zinc and Phosphorus? Is the old Syntec 5w40 with SJ/SL rating on the way out? C.
See the topic I just created for more on this subject:
Be prepared to do some reading!

Anyone have the latest 'Porsche Approved' list?
My long-time local Porsche guru (Russ Kelso of PMCI) puts Motul 5W-40 in my Cayman. He said that here in the southwest, the 0W-40 is unnecessary. I believe him.
I believe it's at website
