I have a 2011 Basic Cayman with 600 miles on it. Just had to add 1/3- 1/2 of a quart of oil. Is this normal? I never really had to add oil to my BMW Z3.
I was told by my dealer that these cars will burn oil a little bit in the beginning but should level off. I just got over 1000 miles on my 2012 S and have not noticed a drop in oil level, YET.
I was down two bars, I was careful not to add too much. How you liking your new S? I love my basic, lotta fun.
So far, I love the S, although the PDK takes a little getting used to. Some issues that are different than a regular automatic.
I only have a couple of very minor complaints - no automatic headlights (what's up with that?) and having to double pull to open the door if you have the program set to autolock.
did you note the beginning level prior to adding oil, sometimes the intial level is down 2 bars. Next time i would wait until the indicator turns on, that will give you a better idea of how much it is burning over x number of miles
yeah, probably a good idea
And don't baby the car too much during break-in - yes, keep the revs down, but you do need to exercise the throttle a bit to get the rings to seat.

Uh, no.
The low level indicator should not be used as a signal to add oil though of course if it comes on oil must be added.
The level should not be allowed to drop down to the low oil level.
The oil level should be kept between the max and min lines, preferrably closer to the former than the latter.
If you want to know how much oil the engine's using carry a new quart of oil in the car and add oil when necessary and after so many miles -- between oil changes or some other yardstick -- note how much oil has been used from the quart bottle.
Sincerely,
Rockster.
Yes, normal. New engines and even new but broken in engines can use oil. In fact every engine uses oil though of course some use less than others.
Most likely as the miles accumulate the engine will use less oil.
In rare cases the engine's oil consumption will go up.
It is always a good idea to with a new vehicle build up a feel (accurate feel) for the car's oil (and gas) consumption -- keeping in mind both are affected somewhat by how the car is driven/used -- so if there's a drastic change it can be an early warning sign of something going wrong.
I can't recall how much oil my 08 Cayman S used in its first miles -- it was not a scary amount though or I would remember -- but at 750 miles I changed it oil/filter and again at 1400 miles and then had the dealer change the oil/filter at 2K miles (end of 'break-in').
Up to you but unless the owners manual prohibits it an early oil change is not a bad thing.
Oil consumption might drop a bit since the oil will be fresh and less diluted with water and unburned gas and thus less likely to be consumed in the engine.
Sincerely,
Rockster.
