After picking up the car, I saw on the receipt he used 10-40 Mobil 1 with an "MOA Oil additive - BG 110".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I really don't want to start another lengthy oil discussion, and I have searched the forum for the answer to my question, but haven't found it, so here goes. I took my 996 to my indy today for service, which among other things was to include oil and filter. I was referred to him thru my local PCA where he is pretty active and utilized, so I felt he was current on routine maintenance issues. After picking up the car, I saw on the receipt he used 10-40 Mobil 1 with an "MOA Oil additive - BG 110". I guess I just expected 5-40 and certainly didn't expect any oil additive, particularly since he didn't mention it. I blame myself for most of this since most of our discussion focused on the dreaded IMS issue and I therefore didn't have an opportunity to discuss motor oil when I dropped the car off. He is sending a sample of my old oil out for analysis which I give him credit for being proactive. At the same time, he gave me an estimate of $4800 for IMS and all related work including clutch, pp, water pump, thermostat, AOS, which seemed extremely high to me. Any thoughts on any or all of this would be appreciated.

POST 3Original post

did he include a flywheel? if so - sounds right AND you "might" not need one - most SMART shops bid high and come in under - its easier then the other way around wouldnt you agree? I mean if they said $4000 and it ended up $4200 it fells different then if they say $48 and it comes in at $4400

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

He gave me the estimate over the phone and I don't recall him mentioning the flywheel.

I would think that if he's quoting a water pump in there as "related work" he's also including an allowance for a new flywheel.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, anyone with any thoughts on the oil and additive?

POST 7Original post

FWIW, I just had the IMS retrofit (LNE) done with oil change and filter... $2000. My clutch was already changed, this was proactive (and thankfully correct) on my behalf. Indy shop here in No Colorado, very active in PCA. I was using 10w-40... but the shop swapped it to 5-40 as the cold weather is looming. Seems in line with parts and labor to me.

The service advisors in two Porsche dealerships here in Houston told me Porsche does not recommend any additives and they insisted on Mobil 1 0W-40 Many disagree but I tend to listen to Porsche, but that's just me

"Everyone likes different flavors of ice cream but I wouldn't eat what he's serving." Too all it's the wrong weight, too many it's the wrong brand, and to most the use of an additive is a big no-no and and a big waste of $$$ He if responds that 10W-40 is ok via the manual, then I would take my car somewhere else. That information is at least 8 years old and Porsche recommends no 10w-40 currently. It's 0w-40 & 5w-40 across the board with the only difference being the recommendation of Mobil 1 5w-50 I paid $2400 for the IMS bearing, AOS, and a new "y" shaped coolant hose to be installed. The $2400 included parts and labor. Your quote seems in the ballpark.

POST 10Original post

I believe this is the most up to date oil list from Porsche. You need to look at the A40 section. http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/P...oved_Oils.html

POST 11Original post

The problem, (from what I can gather) heavier weight oils can not be pumped as fast to the top of the engine on start up to lub the parts up there. How true this all is I dont know.. I am repeating what I heard. I put slick-50 in once a year....

POST 12Original post

Are you sure that wan't just a typo on the invoice ? I'd ask him - and if he says 10W40 still - ask him why ?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Really appreciate the input from everyone. I may just take Targa's advice and ask him if the 10-40 is correct, particularly given the fact we are headed into winter here in the NE and temps routinely go below freezing. He did send the oil out for analysis and said he would email me the results. As for IMS, I might be missing something but I got quoted $4800 and the numbers I am seeomg here are closer to $2400.

POST 15Original post

Well, I did all of this to my car myself IIRC parts cost were as follows IMS $1000, 10hrs Seal $5, 15 min Clutch $400, 0 time.Included with IMS AOS $150, 4 hours Water pump $180, 1 hour About 2000 in parts add another 600 to that for a flywheel if you want one and 0 time. I think he is about right on the price. 1 he is going to mark up the parts (after all he is on the warranty hook) 2 He has to warranty the job. 3 He has to make money. So by the time you add the labor and the parts mark up... Sounds about right for all that work People are victoms of their own cheapness. He can do it for less I am sure.. But not with out sacrifice to after job service.

OK, that answers it. Thanks Kyle and everyone else for your advice.
