Just ordered the Dension 500 via Eric's group buy and wanted to get opinions on where best install location is. I have a CDR24 w/ Bose, no PCM, no CD Changer. My intent is to have the ipod as easily accessible as possible in the cabin so I can control it directly.
Am I better off installing in the front trunk and running the wires back into the cabin or installing directly behind the head unit?
Thanks
Wondering the same thing...
I just got a 2007 Cayman S after my 2004 C4S was totaled in an accident. The Cayman also has a CDR24 w/ Bose and w/o a changer. I also just bought a Gateway 500 from Eric. I used a ProClip mount for my iPod/iPhone in C4S, and I just ordered a new bracket for it to fit the Cayman. Unless I hear a better idea here, I plan to mount the Gateway in the front trunk and to run the wire into the passenger compartment and to the ProClip.
After much reading and searching, planning on going for install behind the head unit so I can run the ipod into the cubby in front of the gear shifter.
One other question - what is best way to tap into power lines behind head unit? Do i need to strip away the existing lines and solder or is there an easier way?
best way w/o tools.
Posi-Tap- No Crimp Tap
Mine is behind the center console --- it's a tight fit, and you may have to fiddle with its orientation before it fits nicely. Some people have installed it in the front trunk too. This is for a 2008 with CDR-24. No idea if the Gen2s have the same kind of space.
I use the Kuda mount.
CDR-24 is what I have as well. Based on other threads, it seemed easier to take out head unit and install there than trying to run cables from front trunk to cabin.
I used 16-14 gauge T-Tap connectors and they worked fine
Are there good instructions for pulling out the cdr-24 and tapping down power?
I got yer back, bro
.
I installed mine in the right side of the passenger foot well. If you remove the little foam sheet that is attached to the glove box on the bottom with four plastic screws, you'll see there's a lot of space under there. I used the supplied tape to affix the unit to some plastic box that said something about "humidity" on it... not sure what that is for.
I had to chain together two lengths of optical cable (a'la NomadicRiley style, thanks) in order to make it from the head unit to this location and it just barely has a comfortable amount of slack. From what I can tell, it's not running over any extremely hot lines or anything, but I may revisit the whole situation soon and see if I need to ziptie or otherwise move lines around.
I didn't install the box right behind the center console, because my Reus Audio subwoofer has a mounting screw that would be impossible to reach if I put the box there.
I tapped into power/ground on the 12V socket in the passenger foot well.
I ran the cables into the glove box. I didn't see any good way to do this without making a hole in the glove box--anyone else care to tell me how that's done?
I had to remove the glove box in order to get a hole in it. This is pretty easy to do, but you have to remove some trim pieces on the right and the cup holder in order to get at all the screws. Be careful when you pop it off--there's three electrical clips to unfasten before you can take the glove box out of the car.
The Dension comes with this cute little hole plug that has three holes in it to accomodate the three wires. I measured this to be 20mm in diameter. I couldn't find any metric spade bits, so I bought a 3/4" one which was just a bit too small. I used a dremel with a sanding bit on it to enlarge it just a hair, but I made it 20.5 mm by accident which is a tad too loose, but it still works. Be careful when doing this.
I put the hole in the top of the glove compartment, next to the light. I haven't mounted all the little accessory holders and such for the cable ends, but will post pictures once I do.
I've read all the posts about installing the Dension, and am about ready to do mine. I want to run a Sat radio with mine, and plan to put the Sat antenna under the cowl below the wipers, but haven't yet figured out how to remove this cowl. Has anyone done this and can help me?
I just talked to Startronics in Santa Monica about installing Dension in my 07 CS w. CDR24 Bose, no changer, no nav. Eddie felt under the passenger seat was best, but I haven't seen anyone mention this location. And plug for iphone in glovebox, totally hidden. May also do a sat radio, again under the seat. Apparently bluetooth not an option with CDR 24 without PCM, although I would like to have it. Anyone see problems with this? Dust? Thread pretty old, but I gather there are no new options for my setup, short of a new head unit. Want to keep stock appearance. Thanks for any suggestions.
Sounds fine to me, but you say put Sat radio down there, are you talking about the faceplate? I mounted mine in front of the shifter on the console. I have the speaker for my radar detector under the pass. seat, works fine. I put all my wiring and stuff inside the stack, tight fit but I managed to get everything in there.
