Just thought i'd share with you my experience of the basic
cdr24
setup here in the UK 06 CS.
I didnt have rear speakers in my car and nor was it possible to use a fader setting from the
cdr24
as it wasnt there. I popped down to the local dealer and they flashed it with a 997 stereo setup as the guy doing the work said, "all 997's have rear speakers". So to my surprise i suddenly had a fader option.
(the
PIWIS
had version 25 of their software on it, so i'm told)
I then proceeded to take apart the car to get to the rear terminals on the back of the headunit. I installed some wires to the correct pins for rear speakers and found that my stereo was capable of pushing out a rear signal.
So all in all...a nice simple effective upgrade for all those stuck with just the standard non
bose
...uk spec stereo.
I have the CDR 24 and my cd player took a dive. When the dealer replaced it under warranty, I was rushing them and I didn't get the program that allowed for a fader--I do have rear speakers. So, I took it back and the program asked the tech whether I have ASK. I haven't looked up what ASK is yet, but it has something to do with an amp for the rear speakers. Just FYI.
This is very helpful information. What size/type of rear speakers did you install? How did you mount them? Isn't it true that the rear grill cannot be removed and there is nothing under it to mount the speaker to? What route did you use to run the speaker wires back to the main radio?
IMHO the lack of rear speakers is the single biggest problem with the base stereo. Without them, you have to pump the volume up really loud to hear anything over the engine, and that's when you get the distortion and bad sound.
I was going to install 5" Focal Coaxial's underneath the rear grills, then thought that the standard headunit power would be insufficient to make best use of the £300 i'd spend on the speakers. So I've decided to take the rear feed from the headunit....run it >> through the center console..to behind the passenger seat. >> Underneath the backing carpet & under the plastic trim which holds the engine cover in place....>> out the the side of engine cover, making sure it doesnt touch it as it gets very hot >> and underneath the shiney aluminium looking cover into the boot space.
I've since added a amplifier in the back which runs from speaker level inputs which is what i intend on using the rear speaker wires for. This is a KAC-9104D, its supposed to be one of the best amps to work from speaker level input. Its not the best solution i know..but i dont want to change headunit so not much choice.
The plan is to add two 6.5" JL audio subs in the rear. utilizing the space behind the lights in the rear boot which doesnt really get used much.
The sound stage in the car....sounds like it lacks power and mids / bass. The treble is fine so i think with the addition of 2 4ohm JL 6.5" SUBS giving 300watts RMS will make a big difference. The speaker level input quality is more noticable when you use full band pass and add components or 2 way speakers. For bass and midbass, its not so noticeable.
If after i feel the bass over powers everything i might splice into the rear wires and add the 5" coaxials underneath the rear grills.
