For the antenna, I mounted it on top of the plastic windshield cowl with a rare earth magnet underneath (so I 'sandwiched' the plastic between the magnet and antenna), then ran the cable thru the passenger side door, under the rubber molding, and into the cabin.
Leading evidence: 'Run cable thru the passenger side door' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). For the power cable, I hardwired a 12v socket to a switched fuse in the fuse box and ran the cable underneath the dash to the passenger's side (there's a hole in front of the center console you can run wires through, very convenient).

Get the standard audio interface, and subscribe to Sirius/XM online, and stream the audio using an iPhone?

The only question I would have is where it says to run the cable UNDER the window molding.

I know I am subject to the ability to have 3G access, but I have been using the iPhone via FM modulator to play music in my current car, and have had very few issues with poor reception/skipping/etc.

I could still use a mobile charger to alleviate the battery drain since the standard audio connection fits a standard headphone jack as far as I can tell.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK here's my issue:
When ordering my car, I wanted to get XM, and as we all know, to get it, you have to get the NAV package (whatever it's called) which is like 3-4k extra. Plus the ipod interface is like 500 bucks, as opposed to the 90 or so for the standard. I know how to get around. I don't need the NAV. So as not to spend the money to get the satellite radio factory will this work?
Get the standard audio interface, and subscribe to Sirius/XM online, and stream the audio using an iPhone? Also would work with Pandora. I know I am subject to the ability to have 3G access, but I have been using the iPhone via FM modulator to play music in my current car, and have had very few issues with poor reception/skipping/etc. Obviously it's not the ideal solution, but IMO it beats paying 4k to get it factory (that's 4K more I can spend on other stuff that really matters: LSD, PASM, Interior upgrades.) Anyone doing this, and if so how's it seem to work? I could still use a mobile charger to alleviate the battery drain since the standard audio connection fits a standard headphone jack as far as I can tell.
Unless.... I can get the music to play thru the Bluetooth interface, which might be possible using the new 3GS iphone. WoW just thought of that.
Opinions?
That would work. I believe someone else here tried this successfully, aside from having a fair amount of audio dropouts, but I guess that would depend on where you are.
I don't believe the Bluetooth interface is A2DP compatible and as such will only work when making voice calls.
Another option would be to buy a simple plug-and-play Sirius or XM tuner and connect it to the AUX interface. I have PCM 3.0 and nav, but no XM - so I hardwired a Stiletto 2 dock and mounted it with a ProClip. Looks very clean and non-intrusive.
Hmm that sounds like a better option. Do those need antennas on the roof or something, or are they stand alone? I don't want to look all ghetto with wires taped everywhere.
Never mind, there is this thing called the internet where you can look stuff like this up apparently. So I looked up your dock thingy and looks pretty concise including instructions. The only question I would have is where it says to run the cable UNDER the window molding. Is this something that you did yourself? I'd be afraid of messing up the molding or making it look ridiculous or worse, making the window less secure or leaky. I'll have to see once I get the car if it is something I could do myself or just have someone do it.

For the antenna, I mounted it on top of the plastic windshield cowl with a rare earth magnet underneath (so I 'sandwiched' the plastic between the magnet and antenna), then ran the cable thru the passenger side door, under the rubber molding, and into the cabin. Completely, 100% reversible.
I'll try to put up some pictures when I have a chance.
Very cool. looking forward to the pics. That sounds better than putting the thing on the roof like the .pdf manual for the dock says. Will have to look at the car when I get it.
If the standard radio on your car has an aux terminal, I would just buy an XM or Sirius car unit (I have the Audiovox commander). I think the Audiovox unit sells for around $100 now - maybe less with specials from XM. It can be mounted easily in the "cubby". In my car, the antenna is mounted inside on the dash at the very front next to the windshield and the wire is hidden between the windshield and dash. (I know that you are supposed to mount the antenna on the outside on a metal surface , but this works about as well as the external antenna on another car I have). The whole installation is very need with no exposed wires. It is not factory - but it doesn't look bad at all.
If you don't have an "aux" terminal, then in order to get decent sound, you will need to buy something like the Dension unit - which will also allow you to have an Ipod. The FM wired FM modulator which comes with the Audiovox really does not work all that well.
Ayway - all of this is a lot cheaper than $3000.

The entire Sirius/XM radio line is waiting approval from the government for a supposedly much improved plug in solution. See

Might consider waiting for those.
I have the nav in my car and had a mobridge installed to take care of ipod and bluetooth. I use the iphone to stream sirius throught the aux port. Same idea as what you are talking about. I get less drop outs this way then I did in my previous car which was hard wired from the factory with sirius.
I have a Pioneer receiver w/ built-in bluetooth, and can stream the audio signal from my iPhone 3GS to it - iPod, internet streaming, and Navigon GPS directions.
I had a 6 month XM trial with my other car...and I let it lapse because the programming, quality, and customer service all sucked. I've since switched to Slacker (similar to Pandora) on my iPhone. They also sell a device that lets your cache a bunch of music while still being able to vote/skip that I am looking at getting -- those with Blackberries can already do this with their blackberry app apparently...
