Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Check the transmission oil level, it could just be low.
Leading evidence: 'Check transmission oil level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check transmission oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If the car has more than about 40k miles, I would change the tranny oil with OE Porsche oil only.

That is one reason that Porsche uses a Dual Mass Flywheel.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys........just a quick question to hopefully calm my paranoia! There's a difference in noise coming from the engine/gearbox area with the clutch either in or out. Now, I realize that with the clutch down, the transmission isn't spinning and so some additional noise will be evident when the clutch is released (this is all in neutral btw).
Was just wondering how much additional noise is "typical"
When you spin the trans (clutch engaged) there are a lot of bits being prodded into action, gears, bearings, shafts, shift forks etc... that are brought "on line".
Some noise is normal. IE: at idle in the garage or somewhere quiet it is normal to hear a
little
gear rattle. That is one reason that Porsche uses a Dual Mass Flywheel.
If your car has had a Light Weight Flywheel fitted the gear clatter is very noticeable at idle.
Yep that was going to be my first question too. Do you have a lightweight flywheel installed? For some reason these can make a terrible racket. However if not, then it could be a tired TO bearing or worse case it could be a bearing internally that is starting to go out, but this does not seem likely given your description.
I don't think that you have anything to worry about just yet, but it would be good to keep an ear on it for a bit and see if it gets worse.

This is actually a great question, but is one that is a bit difficult to answer accurately. We have seen these last far longer than 90K but have also seen them fail in 3 hours on the track, it really depends on how they are driven and how well the owner takes care of the gearbox.
Generally though it is not uncommon to see these require at least some maintaining between 60K to 80K miles. Synchronizers are kind of like clutches, they wear out and require replacement. If someone keeps on going then additional damage usually takes place as a result of the wearing out of the synchronizers, and what might have been a fairly low cost rebuild can turn out to be quite a bit more expensive.
I would also recommend that oil be changed in these gearboxes at least once a year, as some of the damage that we see is certainly due to oil breakdown and contamination.
I hope that this helps to answer your question.
