I want to add two remarks to what I wrote, namely, (i) this sound only occurs when I use the CD player, and (ii) the sound is similar to that made when a small pebble smacks in to the windshield at moderate speeds.

I have the Bose audio installed in my 2006 Boxster S. When I want to mute the music I simply push the TP button. When I push it again to restore the volume, I typically hear an electrical "pop" or "crackle" just before the volume is restored. The "pop" or "crackle" is louder the higher is the volume setting. Has anybody else noticed this? Does anybody have an explanation as to why this happens?
