Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I assume the bulb was switched and the headlight still did not work so you can say the ballast is the problem.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an interesting question here. I have the opportunity to purchase a non-working litronic for my 986 (2002 986S). The headlight is in mint condition visually. Apparently the ballast "went out" or is not working. I assume the bulb was switched and the headlight still did not work so you can say the ballast is the problem. What I am wondering is if I can just use the housing? (I will benefit from the clear housing which is aesthetically nicer than the ambers I have, as well as having the beam pattern of the litronics). Is there any way I can use one of those cheap aftermarket eBay type ballasts to somehow re-wire the old ballast, or just bypass it all together? Whether it is a D2S cheapo kit off eBay or a H6 or H7 or whatever? I have an old cheapo ballast laying around from when I had it on my factory halogens. (if it makes any different, I DO have a working factory litronic for my OTHER headlight but I can always purchase new bulbs for both sides so they match). If anyone can help I'de appreciate it. The reason why I'm interested in this is because I can get this non-working/housing headlight for just a couple hundred bucks. Just want to know what are my options...
