Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace fuse' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace fuse' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I tested the relays, fuses, and temperature sensor.

Suggestion · Original poster
Is there a temperature switch on the engine that the plug connects to that is easy to change w/o dropping the engine?

Finally I moved the temperature sensor so it was basically sitting on the engine just to test whether the fan would turn on if the sensor reached the proper temperature.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 99 996 C2. I am trying to work though the riddle that is my engine compartment fan.
My engine compartment fan will not turn on, unless the engine is about 0 on 180 AND I open engine compartment and pull the plug that connects the fan to the engine sensor. If I do this, the fan runs until the engine cools down; however, I will NOT turn on automatically.
So Far
- bought new fan and wiring harness
- Replaced relay
- Replaced fuse
On the track with airflow going over 3 radiators, my car stays just to the right of the 180. However, at auto-x with little airflow, the car tends to run hot, and when I sit in traffic in the Atlanta summers.
Thoughts or ideas? Is there a temperature switch on the engine that the plug connects to that is easy to change w/o dropping the engine? I can pull the plug off/and put on, but there is not a lot of wiggle room in there.
I went through what I thought was a similar issue only to discover it wasn't an issue. In the past six years I've heard my engine compartment fan come on maybe once or twice in total. This includes some 90+ days at the track.
I tested the relays, fuses, and temperature sensor. Everything tested fine. Finally I moved the temperature sensor so it was basically sitting on the engine just to test whether the fan would turn on if the sensor reached the proper temperature. Sure enough, the fan kicked on just as I parked on a hot day. The moral of the story is that the temperature required to turn on the engine bay fan is high enough that it will almost never turn on unless the bay is very hot. Your system is probably working just fine.
To answer your question, yes, the temperature sensor is located on the passenger side of the engine and is mounted between the intake manifold runners.
Why not do the engine compartment fan mod so you can control the fan as you like with a micro switch in the cabin?
It would be nice if there was a lower temp sensor for automatic operation of the fans, but I haven't heard of any.
