Suspected cause
The issue is the Final Drive Ratio - quoted as 3.25 for the PDK - correct, I believe.

Congrats. Weather is crap. Can't have the new car buying experience inside the dealership. Stand outside sign some stuff. Only you can get in the car then bugger off home.
Get it delivered on a day you can immediately go and drive it around you favourite local roads.
Congrats, I've turned down a couple of slots for one of these but might be interested depending on gearing, would you mind posting what the rpm is at 75 in top, please? (Apologies, I'm always asking about this).
I will have the same dilema coming up,
pros of collecting is that you get to look over all the car for any scratches, dents, spec, etc, etc, before driving off, there shouldnt be any off course.
pros of delivery you dont have to go to the dealership,
cons, do you like or trust the delivery mob to get it on the trailer without marking anything, i am personally never keen on that, but it happens every day and most cars are fine, , ,
its just easier to raise issues if there are any before it arrives at your door,
mine, want PPF before it leaves the dealership and I will be collecting it and inspecting every panel before it leaves their forecourt.

scott.

What’s ppf Scott? The opc have asked me if I want ceramic paint protection doing before I collect. £499 I think he said cx2 and leather Whatever that means

Andy congrats again, was just chatting to you on Facebook about it and mine being ready March too (John Cameron).
Exciting times, I’m just gonna go to the dealer to get it, as Scott was saying I’d rather not trust any delivery driver

Paint Protection Film. I'm having it applied to my car before it leaves dealership, also. Was quoted £1400 for front end + rear wheel arches.
There's also the alternative of spray-on protection, which I'm debating (versus PPF) at the moment.
Basically, these will protect from stone chips and minor scratches.

I am Interested in people’s views on this. OPC quoted me £2000 for ppf front and sills, I am going for ceramic coating only. £750.
If you are happy collecting it do so then you can inspect the car personally.
If you have it delivered check the underside for damage. I've had 2 front splitters and 3 plastic sill covers damaged by transporter loading on new Porsche GTs even with front lift. OPCs sorted no problem it but it was a faff and inconvenience and dead miles returning the car.
Imo don't bother with the paint protection its a rip off.

I've done nothing to protect my car and in 12months/4000m I've got one very small stone chip on my bumper and some mild rash inside the wheelarches.
PPF has its fans, but for me it's a massive waste of money.

I'm still unsure about mine given it's ability to collect dirt in the seams but it's saved me from a good 3 or 4 in the first 800 miles I've done in the car. I don't think you're too far from me but the roads around Alderley Edge/Knutsford (Cheshire in general?) are a disgrace. Probably worth it for me?
One of these potholes will claim an alloy soon/swallow entire car, no amount of PPF is going to stop that

Don’t think Matt Farah has the gear speeds right either unless they have indeed changed the ratios.
Last manual did 84 in 2nd at what 7600 rpm?
The pdk in the 981 was 75 I think?
Guess both now at 8000 revs would be higher so be interesting to get gear speeds direct from Porsche. Apparently 17 seconds faster than the manual round the ring, probably down to the increased torque, better locking dif and faster changes more so than much shorter gearing. Still to find out if 7th is not just an overdrive.
I do think he’s right though, buy the manual if that’s what you really want and vice versa
17 seconds faster around the 'ring? That's a lot - got a link to that? That's how much faster the new 992 GT3 is over the 991.2 with an extra 10bhp, tricker tyres and a whole new double wishbone suspension system!
As for the increased torque of the PDK car, it's only a touch more and done to offset the drivetrain losses of the double clutch system.
No link just read it in a blurb so might be pish, can’t remember how much faster the pdk GT3 was than the manual one for reference, but don’t think it had the better dif or extra torque so maybe also not a fair comparison. Sure we will hear soon, but not as much fun unless you are changing gears I guess
3 seconds is a claimed difference for the GT3 PDK vs manual in this thread:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I very much doubt it's 17 for the GT4, even though the GT3 has a manual box with ratios closer to the PDK. It'd be good to see if there's definitive data out there though!

Worth pointing out that the Ring has been smoothed out and resurfaced in parts and apparantly slightly shorter since 2017 991.2 GT3 lap.

PDK GT3 has e diff manual has mech diff. Engine torque is the same.

The GT4 PDK has 7lb/ft extra torque over the Manual for one reason alone and its nothing to do with drivetrain losses. The PDK's 317 Torque is what the engine produces and the Manual has less because its Gearbox is strictly limited to 310. This is purely from a licencing POV as plenty have souped up GT4s to exceed this figure/

I reckon the engine could produce more than 317 in its current form, I'm pretty sure it's a parasitic losses thing just like it was on the 718 GTS with the 2.5T. I suspect they're both electronically limited in the engine mapping but at different levels.
I seemed to remember some talk of PDK vs manual in another thread but I couldn't find it, so I Googled and found the press release:
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/products/pors...
Porsche said:
Compared with the 718 models with the manual transmission, the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 now accelerate from 0-100 km/h half a second faster, in 3.9 seconds. They reach the 200 km/h mark in 13.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster). The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, both with 294 kW (400 PS), also improve in the standard sprint from 0-100 km/h by half a second to 4.0 seconds, and then reach the 200 km/h mark in 13.7 seconds (0.4 seconds faster compared with the manual transmission).
So launch control saves 0.5 seconds in the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint but the manual car claws back 0.1 seconds between 100-200km/h (62-124mph) as the gap drops to 0.4 seconds.
With auto-blip and a good driver there's probably not a lot of difference between the manual and PDK cars in strightline speed so it would all come down to the diff differences and how much of an effect they have on handling:
Porsche said:
In addition, the PDK versions of the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 benefit from the enhancements made to their mechanical locking rear differential: in traction and overrun modes, this achieves locking values of 30 and 37 per cent as compared with 22 and 27 per cent with the manual transmission. This has a positive effect on the longitudinal and lateral dynamics as well as traction, and increases driving pleasure.
OP - I picked up a new car from the OPC during lockdown. The only difference was we ( Mrs and I ) were not able to drink coffee and eat the biscuits. The OPC has a dedicated handover area that just us and him were in. The car was covered and the reveal and handover no different to when I got one out of lockdown. Plenty of opportunity to look the car over, check it and drink in the new car smell !!
Congrats on the new car, looking out the window at the glorious sun and blue skies, you got it just in time

I doubt very much there is an official lap to confirm the 17 seconds advantage for the PDK GT4 because that would mean a full lap of 7.15 which is only just over a second slower than a 991.2 GT3 PDK! The manual 718 GT4 does it in 7.32 and the 981 GT4 does it in 7.42 (I was quite surprised when I saw that the 718 was 10 seconds quicker).
On the other hand, I would not be at all surprised if a PDK GT4 was significantly quicker around the 'ring than a manual for the 'average driver'. Maybe that is where the 17 seconds has come from because the times above are all for pro drivers? Having owned a PDK car (Cayman R) before my GT4, I think a PDK would very likely reduce my time around Spa Francorchamps in the GT4 by at least 3 seconds (ca. 3 minute lap). Therefore it would likely reduce a lap of the 'ring (which must be about 3 x longer) by at least 9 seconds.
If I bought a 718 GT4 replacement for my 981 GT4, I would definitely go PDK. Because as David says.....PDK wins on trackdays!
Sounds like people are getting all these times mixed up with 992 GT3
718 GT4 PDK being 17secs quicker than the manual GT4 doesn't sound correct at all.
The end of gear speeds aren't even all that different - so you're just saving the shift time?
Motortrend estimated that PDK would be 7-8seconds quicker - but that sounds more like the kind of gain from an RS (which maybe should even quicker)
PDK GT4 is carrying a little more weight, and are there more transmission loss from a PDK?
https://www.motortrend.com/cars/porsche/718-cayman...
Oh, and a PDK transmission will be available in a few months for those who really want to chase lap times. The six-speed manual is fun, say the Porsche engineers, but the PDK is fast. No one will confirm it on the record, but it's whispered a PDK-equipped 718 Cayman GT4 has already lapped the Nordschleife seven to eight seconds quicker than the manual car.
Before the launch of the PDK cars I thought that they might be shorter ratios - but that not the case. Likely saving this for RS.

7-8 seconds sounds much more likely over a 7 minute lap
Still sounds like a lot though... and its all rumours - there is no official time.
991.2 GT3 PDK is only 3 sec quicker that Manual GT3.
Indeed. I think the shorter ratio 'box of the 991.2 may come into play? I assume PDK and Manual gears 1-6 are very similar. More of a difference in the GT4 so a doubling of the gap in times could be right.
In the real world, with a mix of driver abilities and circuits/roads the difference is going to be pretty small. Buy the gearbox you like for what it is rather than what performance advantage you think it has

Wonder if the closer GT3 manual to PDK time is largely down to the fast flatshift manual GT3 option obvs not applicable to the GT4 manual v PDK.

Good find T.
PDK lower speeds of c7mph in 2nd and c9.5 mph in 3rd do look more realistic.
That's really interesting and if accurate means that the PDK GT4 has a high 7th gear the same as the 981 PDK, which I found really useful. You don't use 6th on track (generally) so being able to take it easy on a motorway on the way can be a bit of a relief. The 991.2 GT3 PDK didn't have such a high 7th, wonder what the ratio was in that.
End of gear speeds are higher than previous gen for MT because of the raised rev limit.
Common practice is the US was to do a big engine conversion from a base 981 2.7 because this is actually a different ratio box.… this would likely have been revised for the new power output.
But goes to show Porsche have the parts right their on the shelf but actively chose not to use them for emissions and to maintain the product hierarchy.
I’m not sure all the numbers in that table are correct.
But something to have discussion around anyway.

Good spot, they do indeed and that table doesn't account for it.
Bit of a moot point though really as it's a cruising gear so even if it's 50mph shorter it makes no performance difference. It'll hit top speed in sixth.

Yeah agreed, I think if anything I’d have preferred a longer cruising gear... but I’m sure I’ll learn to cope
My 981 GTS PDK definitely didn’t to 85 mph in second on the Rev limiter it was somewhere in the low to mid 70s.
I also remember some blurb saying the PDK GT4 as not having the economy 7th gear. I agree it would be handy for the motorway getting to the Alps or just for cruising, will find out in a couple of weeks and try and calculate it in the running in period.
Wish they had a “track my order” thing it was apparently at the port 4 or 5 days ago!

GT3 7th is around 25 mph/1,000 revs, as I recall 981 S PDK around 32 mph.

No! the original quote was correct. The issue is the Final Drive Ratio - quoted as 3.25 for the PDK - correct, I believe. HOWEVER there is clearly a step down in the PDK box - and hence the 718 box quotes an OVERALL ratio of 3.62. I KNOW my 981S PDK did about 70 in second and 100 in third (I checked it with GPS because it was obvious that the car wasn't pulling 40mph/1000 in 7th.
The US folks used this calculator. If you know the correct gearing spec numbers pump them in and see what you speeds get...

The significant word is OVERAL transmission ratio - ie it's not the final drive ratio - but the final drive ratio x the constant dropdown ratio in the box. I'm surprized this is still being discussed - the fact that PDK is around 15% lower geared in the intermediates has been a fact (and accepted by most) for years.

Another reason for the 2.7 is that the PCNA exchange value for the 2.7 is more than for a 3.4. Also 2.7 is a cheaper base car to buy.
