Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys. My 138,000+ mile 996 has recently developed a starting issue when warm. It'll crank just fine, but not fire. I can't really smell fuel in the exhaust, but I'm not sure if it's a spark or fuel delivery issue (in the old days, that would have been an easy diagnosis, but not any more). The first few times it happened, I was able to start it after maybe 5-8 minutes. And it would fire as if nothing were ever wrong with it. Once running, it behaves normally under all loads and to redline. Today, I got stuck for about 15 minutes before she suddenly decided to fire - as if there was nothing wrong. My wife had already shown up to come get me from the parking lot when, during one last try, the car fired right up. Not sure what might be going on here. Any ideas?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmm. I'll have to look into that. I'm a DIY guy, so I may be able to swap that out myself.

+1 on replacing the crank position sensor. Was causing similar issues on my wife's Boxster. I was able to change it without a lift on the garage floor by jacking up the passenger side. Kind of a pain in the butt, but definitely do-able.

POST 5Original post

heres a link on how to do the DIY http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...ensor-removal/ good luck

POST 6Original post

Warm starting problems have also been associated with corroded electrical connections to the starter. You'll need to pull the generator to check the lines behind it. Do a few searches on hot start issues and you'll turn up some interesting pictures of the area of concern. -Shawn

POST 7Original post

Don't forget to check the evap valves. A failing one at the fuel tank or in the engine compartment will cause it to crank but not fire. There is a TSB on this and it is not uncommon. I suspect that most of them will fail sometime after 100k miles.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, it seems that my problem is solved. I called my parts guy who had a new Bosch Crank Position Sensor delivered to his shop a few hours later - about $150. In the mean time, I jacked the back of the car up and put it on jackstands, removed the left rear wheel, located the sensor and single mounting screw, and removed the sensor without too much trouble. Once I got the new one, it was installed in a matter of minutes. I started the car - just to be sure all was well - and it fired RIGHT up, with more authority than I've heard in a while. Wheel back on, car lowered, and test drive/gas run taken - with a few intermediate stops along the way. It fired up immediately each time. Not only that. it seems to have a smoother idle now and the power seems a bit more immediate and linear. Thanks for all of your help guys. Tom, thanks for the heads-up on a possible issue down the line.
