Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In which case, if there's a way of testing the wheel, I'd go for that option and in the meantime regularly check your tyre for pressure loss.

My reservation with this wheel is not with the repair but with the rest of the wheel.

well happy with the repair but am going to look for a cheap replacement and swap them over

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Woke up this morning had a flat tyre
so jacked up car and thought bonus drop it off on way to work
took wheel off and saw crack about half inch long in back in of rim . kicked a few things and went to garage .
as you can see the wheel is mint i never curb wheels and i cant remember any thing happening when i drove it last .
now i know a lad i went to school with who is a wizz kid with welder he drilled the wheel cut the crack out and welded it up .
he also painted the inside again so after 2 hrs it was back on the car
ive searched ebay but nothing , am looking for a 10j rear wheel cos i wont be doing 150mph on this one as its not only my life i might ruin .
question will this be ok ?
would u of fixed it like that ?
and the wheel fixed
I've had a cracked wheel. Must have happened with the previous owner as it was already repaired. It's been checked for run out and I've had it up to an indicated 180mph with no issues. Wouldn't bother me if it's repaired properly.
like said i drive it daily and was in it last night and nothing happened , am a bit sad i park miles from curbs and avoid scratching them .
and the misses dont drive it as she's a curb monster
Hi
My reservation with this wheel is not with the repair but with the rest of the wheel. If it cracked like that maybe the whole casting is sub standard?
On a Golf it would be OK. On a 996 I would only have it on the car while a replacement was found.

I'd imagine that the previous owner had a rear tyre blow out and this damaged the wheel (hairline crack) that wasn't noticed when the new tyre was fitted.
Over time and with the weather variations, the crack has widened over time.
Personally I would buy a new wheel and not muck about - but if it's second hand how do you know the history?
In which case, if there's a way of testing the wheel, I'd go for that option and in the meantime regularly check your tyre for pressure loss.
Wheels used in racing are regularly crack-tested (usually by x-raying them). You can use a special fluid that migrates into cracks but it's not nearly as informative as an x-ray.
If the weld repair has been done to high standard (and it looks like it was), I wouldn't worry about using the wheel. If you really want peace of mind, use a tyre pressure monitoring system, which will give you an early warning of pressure drops for whatever reason.
Always annoying to find damage to a wheel.
It looks like a good job, and there is no issue with welding a crack, but it is unsafe (risky) to have multiple welds on the same rim. Did your friend spin teh wheel first to check it hadnt 'flatspotted'? Obviously its pointless welding damage to then find the wheel needs straightening, which would weaken the repair. Professionally repaired it should be perfectly safe but I would advise driving at max speed or tracking on a wheel you know to be less than perfect.
Normally when a cracked wheel is repaired extra material is built up on the surface to strengthen the repair. Being invisible is not ideal as its harder to spot for a future owner, or could be sold on to an unwitting buyer.
These Carrera 5 spoke (aka MY02) wheel are nice and light, but if they do hit a pothole or kerb they are more common to failure than other Porsche wheels. Some BMW wheels are notorious for cracks so its not as uncommon as you might think.
Personally I would do all 911 owners a favour and mark the wheel in some way to identify it as damage repaired and let us know. I wouldnt like to come across an invisible mend on behalf of a customer from 911uk.

yes mate spun it on balancer when i noticed the crack to see if it was my fault it had cracked
then again when i had the repair done and tyre fitted all was fine
well happy with the repair but am going to look for a cheap replacement and swap them over
