Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Note that if you disconnect the battery to do this, make sure the ignition is on (engine not running) when you disconnect the negative or you'll trigger the alarm.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For those of you that use a battery charger, can you use the terminals in the engine compartment ? It's not possible to connect the negative cable to an earth at the battery as there isn't one (is there ?).

Pepsi Max 996T said: For those of you that use a battery charger, can you use the terminals in the engine compartment ? It's not possible to connect the negative cable to an earth at the battery as there isn't one (is there ?). I don't understand the question. If the battery didn't have an negative (earth) connection, it wouldn't work. My trickle charger is connected directly to the battery. Note that if you disconnect the battery to do this, make sure the ignition is on (engine not running) when you disconnect the negative or you'll trigger the alarm.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should have said "at the battery compartment" not battery. The instructions state to connect the negative cable to an earthing point not the negative battery terminal. This is OK for most cars where the battery is in the engine compartment but not for a 911 where it's not !

POST 4Original post

The complete shell of the car is earth (-v). As long as you get a location or something that is thick enough to carry the current it will not be any issue. A stud or any metal unpainted surface will be ok. Avoid connecting to metal hoses and lines or any Ecu or electronics. A bolt head on the engine will be acceptable or the chassis of the car if you can find an unpainted surface. Assuming the charger is also low current is less than 6 amps. Any higher I would suggest connection direct to the battery terminals.
