GT One had a look at it and said there was nothing wrong, just 'that's the way it is due to the aerial being in the windscreen'.

Suggestion

You could ask an OPC parts department if they could check the PET (spare parts system) for the availability of the items needed to retrofit an external antenna to a UK market 996.

If anyone else finds themselves stuck in Wallingford for the day, as I did while Tony fitted the cruise, I can thoroughly recommend the full English breakfast at the Dolphin in the town.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I had one of the Acoustic Solutions units in the past and it worked pretty well, so I think it may be a good option.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been lurking for some time while I've been looking for a 996, and now I've got my baby I thought it was time to say hello. As of just under 2 weeks ago I'm the proud owner of a 2001 996 Carrera 4 tiptronic, and so far I'm absolutely loving it. It's certainly the best car I've ever owned, and I can't get enough of that 'special' feeling every time I get in and start her up. In the last 2 weeks I've had cruise control fitted by Tony at Wrightune (I do a fair amount of motorway miles), who is a top guy and did a lovely job. If anyone else finds themselves stuck in Wallingford for the day, as I did while Tony fitted the cruise, I can thoroughly recommend the full English breakfast at the Dolphin in the town. I've also just had a few bits and pieces done by GT One in Chertsey, as they are my local specialist, and again I can't recommend them highly enough. They are a joy to deal with and did a fantastic job. There is just one thing that is bothering me, that I thought people out there might be able to help with. I tend to listen to Talksport a lot on the radio, and I've found that the reception on AM in is AWFUL! GT One had a look at it and said there was nothing wrong, just 'that's the way it is due to the aerial being in the windscreen'. So can I ask if anyone else has a similar experience, and if so did you find a good fix? Anyway, it's been a pleasure lurking for a while, and I'm now glad to be one of the team.

POST 2Original post

:welcome: to the 996 club and of course :useless: With regard to Talk Sport - turn it off and listen to the flat 6, probably get more sense from that imho.

POST 3Original post

AM band reception does not usually have a high priority for car radios in most countries, because there is no real demand for it. However, if I remember correctly, an additional external AM antenna was offered as an optional extra for the 996 for the American market, due the popularity of the so-called Talk Radio stations on AM there. You could ask an OPC parts department if they could check the PET (spare parts system) for the availability of the items needed to retrofit an external antenna to a UK market 996. If I remember correctly (again) the antenna was on the roof just ahead of the rear window, where European market cars had their cellphone antennas.

Welcome :thumb: An excellent choice of car Sir. What colour is it? What wheels? Looking forward to comparing notes and seeing pics. What did you have before? T8

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I'll try and take some pics tomorrow to post up. To Red993C4, I called the my local OPC in Byfleet, and they couldn't find an external aerial for a 996, plus they also said that all Porsche's since the late 80's have had universally bad AM reception, and there's little you can do about it. He did suggest I fit an after market DAB, so I'm thinking I may go with this solution... http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Acoustic_Solutions_DAB-ICS100_DAB_car_radio.html ... along with a glass mounted aerial, as I'd be gutted not to have Talksport and 5 live (especially for the cricket). I had one of the Acoustic Solutions units in the past and it worked pretty well, so I think it may be a good option.

POST 11Original post

Welcome! AM reception is pretty poor unfortunately. ~ Maxie

POST 12Original post

Well done mate. Excellent motor. As a matter of interest how well is that cruise control working? I have asked a couple of OPC to fit them and have had mixed reports as to their reliability. This has me somewhat confused as I would like to fit one of those meself but don't want to be paying for it if it is problematic. Any thoughts appreciated and WELCOME!

POST 13Original post

Three years of Tony Wright's CC retrofit and no probs here. :thumb: Sounds like sour grapes from OPC (who without PAG authorised TSB have no OEM method of fitting CC to a 996). Odd really, as they fitted them exactly the same, with the same parts, on the Stuttgart production line!

POST 14Original post

Exceptionally excellent news! Where is this Tony Wright located and what kind of costs are we talking about for a CC kit and installation? :thumb:
