Suggestion

Might be a bad admission but I do not prepare either car for winter........they both have good tyres (if they get low they get changed), the washer fluid is checked relatively regularly, I'd notice if the wipers were ineffective etc, and they are serviced on schedule to identify other issues.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How to Prepare Your Car For the Winter When winter approaches there are some basic things you must do to make sure your vehicle remains reliable and safe. If you live in a warm climate you should do these things on a regular basis anyway for the same reasons! 1.Have your cooling system cleaned and flushed, and new antifreeze put in. 1.A thorough cooling system check will include a leak test. This is where they put the system under pressure and visually look for leaks. Ask you mechanic to do this, in the event it is not part of his regular cooling system service. 1.Make sure that all your radiator and heater hoses are also checked. If any of them show signs of cracking, rotting or softness replace them even if they're not leaking yet. 1.Check all fan belts for cracks or wear. Replace if necessary. 1.Check your windshield wipers for wear. Replace if needed 1.Have your brakes and tires checked. Replace any worn parts in the brakes and any worn tires. 1.Also make sure your spare has air in it, and you know how to safely use your jack and lug wrench. 1.Make sure your heater, defroster and rear defogger are working properly. 1.Have your battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Don't take any chances here. 1.Carry emergency equipment on board your vehicle, including jumper cables, flash light, extra batteries, flares, a shovel, first aid kit, basic hand tools, blankets and if at all possible a cell phone. 1.And don't forget to keep plenty of gas and windshield washer fluid in your vehicle.

POST 2Original post

Also dont forget: 1. Put Winter Tyres on. 1. There are BIG differences between anti-freezes, double check yours is the correct one for your car (eg colours vary). 1. Keep a warm coat and/or a blanket in the front boot 1. Put a tow rope in the boot an dcheck your towing eye is in the toolkit

POST 3Original post

And a small foldable shovel for £5 from Amazon is useful in case you have to do dig yourself out of the snow instead of relying on twigs like I did.

POST 4Original post

1. Don't panic, it's only a spot of bad weather. 1. Get used to it, it happens every year. 1. Be careful, there's more idiots on the road than usual. uh:

Might be a bad admission but I do not prepare either car for winter........they both have good tyres (if they get low they get changed), the washer fluid is checked relatively regularly, I'd notice if the wipers were ineffective etc, and they are serviced on schedule to identify other issues.

POST 6Original post

Same here uuf361. It's not like we're in Alaska and I'm fairly certain a temperature change of around 30 degrees isn't detrimental to the running of your vehicle. It'll certainly handle the extremes of heat and cold far better than we ever will! The operating temperatures of your tyres, wiper blades, battery, screenwash, brakes, etc, are all well suited to handling any weather that the British winter will throw at you. If you service regularly then your anti-freeze should also be able to handle itself. If it's slippy then slow down. If it's knee deep in snow then even stay at home for a few days until it passes. Even with winter tyres you're likely to get stuck behind someone who hasn't or a queue of people who don't. Happens every year and people still seem to be surprised when it does!

POST 7Original post

I also used to live in Denver and it snows there, sometimes a lot and I didn't do any winter preparations there either........the only concession was that I did have a shovel in the trunk of the car which came in handy only once or twice digging the car out of the airport car park, but even then only after massive dumps of snow (i.e. 36 inches in 36 hours)....

POST 9Original post

+1 IMHO it's just a car. Although a very nice one.

POST 10Original post

The only winter 'prep' I partake in is placing an ice-scraper in the glovebox. Which I shall be doing tomorrow morning after having to wait 10 mins for the car to defrost when leaving work tonight...

POST 11Original post

Can't beat a hot kettle in the morning :floor: , wife's car of course :thumb:

POST 12Original post

It's not the mornings that are the problem (it's pretty well protected by the front of the house / girlfriend and neighbours cars either side so rarely gets iced over that badly overnight), I just don't have a boiling kettle with me when leaving work each night (pretty exposed car park in the middle of the Cheshire countryside)!!!

POST 13Original post

winter prep Mine take it into garage fit cover , wait until spring and drive my pick up find its the best way that salt is a nightmare on a turbo, but be carefull out there.

POST 14Original post

In the cold weather last year (in which I kept driving the C4S - awd is great) I drove for a few miles behind a woman who, whenever the traffic slowed or stopped at a junction, stuck her arm out the window and emptied some more water from a thermos on the windscreen. By the next junction it had iced up - so more water. I can only assume she had a shortish journey. I did just clean my number plates - they were totally illegible by the time I got home today. That's about the limit of my winter prep.

POST 15Original post

I am preparing the car this weekend for winter. At the moment I am toying with the idea of turning the heating up to 23 degrees from 22.5, thats about it. Am i being too over cautious for a German car designed for German winters?
