Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Paragon have poured over the system and changed the engine temp sensor and the thermostat but problem still there.
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine temp sensor and the thermostat' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check vac pipe' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the temperature gauge on my instrument cluster is playing up, the red light comes on and a message on the dash 'temperature indicator failure;, Northway (my excellent local Indy) have replaced the sensor but still having the same issue, they told me that it may be a case of replacing the whole instrument cluster, has anyone else had the same problem, and if so what was the fix?

I have had my indy check and replace the vac pipe but the gauge is still playing up?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
the temperature gauge on my instrument cluster is playing up, the red light comes on and a message on the dash 'temperature indicator failure;, Northway (my excellent local Indy) have replaced the sensor but still having the same issue, they told me that it may be a case of replacing the whole instrument cluster, has anyone else had the same problem, and if so what was the fix?
Many Thanks
PS - I will try to upload some pictures of my car again!
tell them to check the vac pipe that connects to the coolant shut off valve on the tip box .. if this comes adrift the valve stays shut and the warning light stays on...
Hi Porscheuro,
the fault is intermitant, it temperature instrument gauge works then fails and gives the symptoms I have mentioned above, I take it would be something else then what you have stated?
Thanks
I've seen what porscheuro is talking about a couple of times. The temp gauge can fluctuate, but it usually drops to 60 degrees or lower. It isn't the gauge misreading the temperature - it is the tiptronic cooling circuit cutting in when it shouldn't, and over-cooling the engine. The plastic pipe between the valve and inlet manifold splits or cracks.
Definitely worth a look, as it is a cheap fix.
Temperature Gauge Failure
Well, well, well - nice to read about someone with exactly the same problem I have had since buying the car 18 months ago. MY03 996 C2 tip coupe.
PS2 comes up with fault P0116 Engine Temperature Sensor.
However mine only happens when outside air temp is below 10 degrees. Gauge reaches 60 degrees after about 3 miles of journey and fails with same indications as yours. Gauge recovers after another 1-10 miles (it does vary), flicks up to 80 degrees, subsides to about 65 degrees then slowly builds to normal op temp. Thereafter no problems unless break in journey and engine coolant drops below 60 degrees and outside temp remains below 10 degrees.
Mine therefore only happens roughly between Oct and March each year.
Paragon have poured over the system and changed the engine temp sensor and the thermostat but problem still there. Have not looked at vacuum pipe as seems odd to only fail in winter.
I live with it as the car seems perfectly OK. Paragon will have another look at the next service but not expecting any revelations on this one. Porsche OPC Exeter at the 911 clinic suggested it might be an instrument pod problem but I do not want to go down that expensive route unless I absolutely have to.
Idiosyncracies are Porsche - OK!
Instrument mis-behaviour
I have a similar issue between Autumn and Spring, with the Voltmeter. It soometimes reads only 10 V upon starting and then sometimes less than 12V duriing running. Output at Battery is correct around 14V. My indi wonder garage has diagnosed a sticky stepper motor in the instrument pod. ( Requires new Dash pod to fix as it is embedded.) Voltmeter functions perfectly during Summer or when outside temp above 15 C. Perhaps same happeninig with your gauge ...
I have had my indy check and replace the vac pipe but the gauge is still playing up? any further suggestions as to what it could be? it is going back to them in a few weeks for further investigation.
