On my previous car a M3 I opted for the colder plug the iridium and the car noticably ran smoother.

Suggestion

The only thing that I have ever noticed is on older cars e.g Minis, that it may start slightly easier or run a bit better when cold.

One of the reasons for opting for the iridiums on my M3 was longevity but also since the m3 engine runs quite warm I thought it better to run colder plugs.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As above, has anybody tried fitting the iridium spark plugs? On my previous car a M3 I opted for the colder plug the iridium and the car noticably ran smoother. Just wondering if anybody has had any experience of the same type of plug in a 996. If so can you point me in the right direction for gapping please?

POST 2Original post

I started to go down this route but after doing alot of research the concensus was don't bother. I had already purchased them but in the end never fitted, now sat in the garage. Some reports actually stated that them to perform worse than Porsche OEM...

POST 3Original post

The theory about Iridium plugs is that with the smaller diameter (thinner) electrode, for a given voltage, the spark will be stronger. Also, they are supposed to last longer. On both counts there is some truth in it if you compare them to single electrode copper plugs after a period of time. With the single electrode copper plug, it wears faster than the Iridium plug so the gap slowly opens up and the edges of the electrode becomes round and the spark gets progressively weaker. However, on most systems, the voltage of the ignition system is much higher than required so the spark quality is relatively preserved unless you let the plugs get so worn the gap has opened up to ridiculous proportions e.g 0.2+mm more. In most modern cars, the single electrode spark plug is made if Yittrium or Platinum anyway to give better wear characteristics. On Porsches, the plug is multi electrode hence it wears a lot slower. The spark will jump from the path of least resistance and in theory it will have a choice of 2/3/4 electrodes to choose from. With the thin Iridium plugs, I have known of racing Imprezas where the electrode has broken off at high RPM with devastating consequence. I have tried all sorts of plugs in a variety of other cars and to be fair, I have never known the MPG or acceleration times to improve. The only thing that I have ever noticed is on older cars e.g Minis, that it may start slightly easier or run a bit better when cold.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Food for thought. Thanks for your responses. One of the reasons for opting for the iridiums on my M3 was longevity but also since the m3 engine runs quite warm I thought it better to run colder plugs. Haven't really investigated how warm the 996 gets yet. I will have a think for now.

POST 5Original post

I fitted them 18 months ago, have to say that I haven't noticed any difference to standard plugs really but certainly haven't had any problems either (other than failing coilpacks) but that's down to standard coilpack failings! I was lured in by the longevity too so when it comes to their 20k mark in July,I'll see how they've done and report back then!
