Its a motor swap, the same motor using the same parts.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you had a Cayman S or a Boxster S and you were going to do some mods...would you go with Ruf or Farnbacher Loles? If you selected Ruf would you go with the engine swap or Kompressor conversion? thank you in advance for your views...
Correct me if I’m wrong... but it’s the same engine no matter who you get it from... is it not? and both RUF and Farnbacher Loles are top notch companies... so pick whichever one is giving you a better price and/or warrantee... and if they are nearly identical, than go to Farnbacher Loles due to the fact that they are soooo much closer to you.
You are in NJ, Farnbacher Loles without question. I know some of the techs up there from YEARS ago (a friend used to work with them at shop in Norwalk) and those guys know their stuff VERY well.
And like it was posted, the motor itself is all the same. I would chose an X51 swap over forced induction any day. FI on car not made for it never runs 100% perfect. X51 is going to run just like the car was built at the factory.
and (as everyone always point out) your local dealer will be able to service the 3.8 x-51 engine when you need them to. whereas, i wouldnt be very comfortable letting my local dealer work on a RUF supercharged 3.4L.
The advice I was given by Ruf when I asked them this exact question was that the supercharged option made more sense for a street car, but the 3.8 X51 was better for the sustained peak power environment of a track car. Supercharger is OK for typical short bursts of power on the street, but not necessarily durable enough for track abuse.
Since I live only an hour away from F/L its a no brainer for me. I've been there for the CVRPCA tech meeting and toured their facility, for my money(if I had enough) I"d go to F/L, get the 3.8L X51 upgrade and if that wasn't enough, you could still add the supercharger later....
Closer to me is Mustante Motorsports which is another Porsche aftermarket tuner shop and the owner was telling me he was researching a 4.0L motor upgrade for the Cayman. I don't know where they have gone with that but I'll be tracking with the co-owner who is also a chief instructor for CVR this next week at Watkins Glen. He is going to do a few laps with me to give me some advice and we are staying at the same Motel so I plan on really grilling him on the bigger motor and what it will cost, what do they expect for HP.
For me, in CT, if I could only chose between F/L and RUF, I would obviously chose F/L. But I wouldn't choose either before first checking out
Dan Jacobs Hairy Dog Garage
(just about 20 minutes away from F/L). They are the real brains behind the X-51 swap. They'll even drop a GT-3 motor into a Cayman if you've got the cash.
For me, I would not consider a supercharger. For the price, you might as well bone up and get an X-51 which will be more reliable and provide smoother power.
There is a thread dovoted to Cayman engine displacement increases. It would be great if you could post info about the 4.0 engine there, too.
Thanks,
Fort
The 3.8L from the company whose product appeals to you more. They are quite different in appearance to my eye. personally I prefer the FL version over the RUF version aesthetically.
