Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have yet to remove the bearing cage and inspect he bearings properly but from what i can see there is no evidence of wear, the bearing feels fine and the seals were in tact.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect he bearings properly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect he bearings properly' (1 discussions). Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I decided to go ahead and drop my engine & transmission as planned in order to replace the IMS bearing and do a multitude of other things while I am in there. I have put together a web page specifically for this task as it is reasonably involved.
If your interested in seeing the details/pics etc the web page is here

Cheers.
Very nice.
Site and content obviously took time and foresight to produce.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
(can't quite work out how to efficiently re-word that so it sounds less patronising, please be assured it isn't meant as such)
Thanks & no worries. I like to take the mystery out of some of these things so that other owners might consider doing some work themselves or at least understand their cars a bit better when faced with some kind of issue.
I have found it's been a great way to get to know the 996, I feel a lot more 'connected' with it now and I'm looking forwards to when the weather clears up and I can enjoy driving it with a really good awareness of it's mechanical condition.
Hi John,
I have yet to remove the bearing cage and inspect he bearings properly but from what i can see there is no evidence of wear, the bearing feels fine and the seals were in tact. I'll update my findings when I get a chance to take a closer look at the bearing though.
Oz, I just love your dedication. That has to be one of the cleanest 996 around, respect :worship: . Have posted it up over on the Porsche Ireland Forum, hope you don't mind.
Baz.
Great site and thanks for sharing :thumb:
I really enjoy reading sites like this that document the maintenance of cars. Hats off to the amount of effort you have put into it.
I'm glad you guys are finding it helpful. No worries with posting a link elsewhere Baz - The corrosion effects here in this part of the world do need some careful management IMHO so promoting awareness/discusison on the subject has got to be helpful.
I have had to leave the project alone for a few days now as I am in London for a few days. There was about 4" of snow on the driveway when I left this morning so it's going to be interesting when I get back into it on the weekend.
Cheers.
