If you look close at the base of the oil/coolant access compartment you will notice a small drain hole (in case of overflow while filling).

A lot of sound will come into the cabin through the oil/coolant fill console if that flap is left open.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

For the last two weeks I have been hearing a suttle hissing sound comming from the rear which has been driving me crazy. At first I thought it was just a normal engine sound that I just noticed but the more I drove the car the more I heard the sound with each increase in RPM's. It sounded like a leak in the air intake or an open window but comming from the engine compartment. I finaly decided to take it in to be checked out but it was suttle enough that I thought the dealer would think I was crazy. Yesterday for the first time in two weeks I wanted to put some items in the rear trunk and I saw the problem! Two weeks before I was showing the car to a friend who opened the small oil and water filler door and it was still open. Looking at it closly I noticed a seal that goes around the door. I guess it's there to seal the engine compartment from the cab but with it opened you definately can hear air passing into the cab. Closing the door solved the problem. I thought I was going crazy hearing the hissing sound.

POST 2Original post

Is this "hiss" happening when you hit the gas? i am getting a hiss, but it's only when i stomp down the pedal...not sure if I shoudl be worried or not

POST 3Original post

Yes only when you step on the gas. And it will be comming from the rear trunk area.

POST 4Original post

Same with me. It sounds to me like its coming from the exhaust....hopefully someone else will chime in and help us out on a possible cause.

POST 6Original post

It was strictly the filler door left open on my CS. Hissing went away as soon as I closed the door. Check your water and oil flip door and see if it is correctly closed.

POST 7Original post

Yup, same thing happened to me, and the fix was the same: close the flap. A lot of sound will come into the cabin through the oil/coolant fill console if that flap is left open.

POST 8Original post

Don't most reptiles hiss when provoked? And!!...If something goes wrong with a Cayman (S or otherwise), could that be called Reptile Dysfunction?

POST 9Original post

ED Nope, that's eReptile Dysfunction, otherwise know as ED. The  Doctor

POST 10Original post

If you look close at the base of the oil/coolant access compartment you will notice a small drain hole (in case of overflow while filling). This drain is open to the outside. So, the sound was likely traveling through this open hole. It is also likely that the "hiss" was air being sucked out of the car through this hole as the pressure under the car drops as it goes turbulent under the car. I am not an aero wiz, but this seems reasonable.

POST 11Original post

Ok so my problem if different. Sounds to me like my exhaust is making a "whoosh" when I hit the gas. Any ideas on this???

POST 12Original post

Hi Mate, I think I have the same problem. As I hit the gas I getting a short hissing noise. It only occurs when I initially hit the gas and it comes from the rear. If I keep my foot down it will not continue. It seems as though air passing through something. Is this exactly what you get?

POST 13Original post

"I think you are hearing the sound generated by the initial opening of the throttle body. In m y car, it is a momentary (couple tenths of a sec max) followed by the WAAAAH sound of the engine pulling in higher volumes of air. " That is consistent with my experience, including throttle tip in "cough" or hesitation. It went away last week right after I put on the SRP, so I think it must be the throttle body.
