Other things that you can do is to use the GT3 console delete kit to give your left leg more space or a steering wheel extension thing (don't know anyone who has gone down that route though) that is available from Carnewal.

also i chose a tiptronic as gives more room for feet and do also have a number of sets of "driving" shoes or trainers which are narrow with rolled edges to the soles and makes using the pedals at an angle much easier

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has had this problem and maybe found a way round it.
I've been looking to buy a 996 recently and have had a few test drives. Think I've found the one I want, but there's one little niggling thing that's stopping me handing over the cash - The pedal offset.
I'm 6ft3 ish so my legs don't really fit under steering wheels, they fit round them. Not a problem in my current BMW E60 barge, where there's plenty of room and the pedals are in the middle, but in the 996 I find I'm having to curve my leg right round to get to the brakes.
What I'm wondering is, do any of you guys (particularly those over 6ft) have this problem and does it make it uncomfortable over time? Is there some magic way of setting up the driving position to avoid the gymnastics?
For me it was just a matter of the right shoes, but I already have bucket seats (so sitting lower to begin with). Other things that you can do is to use the GT3 console delete kit to give your left leg more space or a steering wheel extension thing (don't know anyone who has gone down that route though) that is available from Carnewal.
Hi there
i am 6ft 1 and find that the offset is fine but i tend to sit closer to the wheel with my knees wider apart than most drivers i know
(everybody of a similar height that has sat in my car always wants to put the seat back at least 2-3 inches)
also i chose a tiptronic as gives more room for feet and do also have a number of sets of "driving" shoes or trainers which are narrow with rolled edges to the soles and makes using the pedals at an angle much easier
mine has the comfort seats and lumbar adjustment which i cant back lower right down and pump up and i find this comfortable on long journeys (200-300 miles)
did try a 993 and a 964 before i bought this car and both were far harder to get comfortable in due to the much more obvious offset pedals
cheers
Did you try adjusting the steering wheel - if you pull the wheel out as far as you can from the dash you may find you get better clearance around your knees?
Cheers for the responses so far. The steering wheel extender looks a bit excessive (especially at 650euros) and I'm not sure I want my hands an extra 2" away from the controls.
I think Timpani's tactic might be the best... Instead of getting the seat right back (my first instinct when trying to fold myself into a car) I should get closer to the wheel and get my knees up by my ears... Oh, and it's a Tip I'm looking at, so at least it's just my right leg that needs to bend the wrong way.
I was amused to (eventually) discover Porsche had put the left foot rest all the way round behind the console. Maybe they should put a signpost in the footwell to help newbies like me find it.
I was not suggesting an 'extender' (not sure what it is to be honest) but from memory the steering wheel is adjustable and it will pull out away from the dash which should allow you to get your knees behind the wheel
Hi Spandex,
I'm around 6'2" and dont appeat to have any issues, i have the seat as low as it goes but not too far back! also have pulled the wheel as far towards me as possible and this helps.
Both mine are manual for me the offset seems to make the heel toe changes easier if anything.
Have a fiddle and see how you get on.
Good luck.
Well, based on the fact that various other lanky gits have successfully crowbarred themselves into 996s, I've put a deposit down on a car.
If I can't get used to it, I'll get my feet offset by 5 inches. If I tell them it's causing me mental trauma, I reckon I can get it done on the NHS.
I'm a cut and shut person - although only just 6' I have the legs of someone 6'4" and the body of a 5'8"
So just because one person who is 6'4" can sit comfortably doesn't mean all can.
911s should some in short, regular and large.
Using mine since July as daily commute with 45 - 75 min drive each way to and from work. Am 6 4 and find my t'tonic fine. I have the seat at lowest point and as far back as poss and seat back quite upright. Once in you do have to push the small of your back right into the seat an sit very slightly angled left. Honestly, very comfortable. Even been behind the wheel for 3 hours and that I must admit was my limit.
Think mine has lowered elec sports seats or was that just the salesman filling in an awkward silence with BS?
The 3 spoke steering wheel gives you an extra couple of inches knee room, and if you have the 'soft ruffled leather' seats - they are usually softer and allow you to sit lower. Whatever, it's a Porsche and you
WILL
get used to it, and grow to love it.
I'm 6' 2" and had concerns too during the first few weeks - but I now look forward to every journy. I did have to make sure I got a facelift though, as they have the 3 spoke wheel....
Just drive it....
totally agree with andy . am 6ft 18st and had a boxster with 4 spoke steering wheel had to sell it as never got the comfort . bad back and knee always hitting the steering wheel on gearchange . tried the steering wheel in and out the seat up down back forwards everything , now got a c2 targa facelift with 3 spoke and the sport seats feels like loads more room
Agree with most others; driving position can feel strange at first but you get used to it quickly - just another 'feature' you'll grow to love on a 911. I'm 6'2" and have no problems; wheel extended, seat in lowest position but quite close to the wheel. :thumb:
Oh, no more talk of NHS please - you're a 911 owner now, private all the way... :hand:
