Suggestion

Either your MAF is faulty or dirty (they last say 50k miles at most and they die quicker with oiling from a K&N style filter and repeated cleaning) or you have unmetered air entering the engine after the MAF or a leak in the exhaust system, or a faulty injector (fuel pressure).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, Well i was not anticipating my new 996 to arrive so early on in my search but here I am. Great car, handles great with factory M030 set up. Loved the long drive back. This is my 5th 911, all the previous ones have been air cooled but this shape has grown on me and so here i am. An issue at the moment is that at idle it revs and holds at 650rpm, which seems low to me, oil pressure sits at 2 when fully warm. Over the last year the car has had a new MAF, new coils and was serviced fully (major service) a year ago but has only done 2000miles. Any ideas would be appreciated. It has had a re-build in its life at 65k, currently on 86k. Here is a pic. It would be rude not to post a pic. It is a C2 manual 996.1.

POST 2Original post

6500 rpm is about right when going to should got to about 6800rpm

POST 3Original post

:thumb: will be interesting to see how you find a 'modern' 911

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Paul I am referring to revs at idle, which are at 650 rpm, which I am assuming a bit low. Should it be around 800 mark? Getting used to the car at the moment will make a comparison in a week or two.

POST 6Original post

That does seem low. Engine idle without a/c is 700-800. With a/c 900-1000. Either your MAF is faulty or dirty (they last say 50k miles at most and they die quicker with oiling from a K&N style filter and repeated cleaning) or you have unmetered air entering the engine after the MAF or a leak in the exhaust system, or a faulty injector (fuel pressure). The low idle is because the car is running too lean. Any other symptoms: Smoke, smells? Do you have a performance filter/induction kit? Still most probably the MAF. Get it tested on a diagnostics machine (PIWIS/PST2) - or stick a new one in or swap with someone's whose works (obviously it has to be the same MAF model) - if your's is fine and their's dies - QED!

POST 8Original post

Great looking 996 :thumb: looking forward to your first weeks of owning her -v- Aircooled !

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks traitors responses guys. GT4 thanks fit your breakdown of what could be the likely culprit. There is snow up here at the moment, so don't fancy driving her at the minute. I will try and get to the bottom of the problem next weekend as I think I will tuck her away this week. Having said that she will be my daily driver, so will look forward to next week weather permitting. Once I have had her a while I will post what I think of her compared to the 911's of yesteryears. Look forward to that. Gr4 it's just had a new MAF sensor, not sure of what filter is in there at the minute. Looks to me many an hour will be spent examining possible causes. I shall report back my findings.

POST 10Original post

Looks good, congrats! These early 996s are absolute bargains at the moment, no? :thumb:

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Couldnt agree more Ant. Alot of car for the money. Everybody who has seen her has made a very positive comment. I wasn't never really a 996 man to be honest but have really grown to love her. I think it is the best 911 i have owned, fantastic in all departments. I am really pleased with her. I will post more pics once the weather improves.

POST 12Original post

Same as mine, wouldn't worry unless there is a misfire.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well that's good to hear, I haven't driven her as much just in case there was an issue. I'm hoping it will idle a bit better after a good service.
