Color me impressed... The car popped an info message informing me the right brake light was toast... wow! Ok I'm easily impressed coming from older cars, but pretty cool....
Not so cool? The stupid bulbs are asymmetrical... And the local parts store sold me supposedly good ones that are symmetrical and don't fit! Ugh... I made them fit, sue me mr porsche engineer, it works for now
I don't know what you mean??? When I had the same issue I went to my local Pep Boys Auto Store and bought a replacement pack of two. There were no asymmetrical or symmetrical options. Can you explain???
Sorry, didn't know what to call them. The base of the bulb (bayonet style) on most cars has 2 little prongs sticking out at 180 degrees, that lock the bulb in place... Those on the cayman bulbs are like 150 degrees, not 180 symmetrical like all my spares and....also the ones I was sold :-(. Not the car's fault, but I wonder why they have to use rarer bulbs...
Regular bulbs won't fit right unless you stupidly muscle them in, which I did for now...better that than no brake lights... Need to find the right ones now... I'm still impressed the car told me about it...I almost lost an old 356 because I had no clue the lights were out and almost got rear ended! Neat feature!
Now I understand.....however, it's not a problem I experienced. What I did experience however was that unless the watt rating of the replacement bulb is exact (5 watt versus 4 watt when all other numbers are the same) the bulb will work although a little dimmer, but the dash message won't clear.
It's a PITA, I just filed one of the prongs off & it worked fine
I've done that on several cars when the prongs don't line up. Thousands of miles without issue. Forced them off with pliers or filed them down. Nice to know its not just me.
as long as noone has faced any issues with this, i shall try it out next time
Why not just buy the correct bulbs?
My wife calls it my stubbornness factor - Dang it! I bought it and I am dang sure going to make it work!! Yes, the attitude has frequetly led to the expenditure of far more time than required to return to the store and correct the error, but it is not as much fun or nearly as satisfying. On the other hand, she is amazed when one of my home projects requires only one trip to the store. I think my average is 3. It's humbling being married to a logical woman.
Finding them is the challenge. I went to the dealer and bought spares. But when the nearest dealer is 60 miles away & you can't run at a DE because of a stupid light bulb it pisses you off & you improvise
