Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

You could always prompt a re-learn of the gearbox DME by disconnecting the battery for an extended period of time (30 mins, possibly less) to reset the memory (don't forget to put the key in the ignition to position 1 to avoid alarm deafness).

Suggestion

The box will have a cold/winter setting that is slower to change between gears and moves up the gearbox earlier (with be in a higher gear than normal for a set speed).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

loving my 98 c2 tip in the snow (unlike 97 sl500 which is trying to kill me !) but, how can I get the `sportier` of the 5 gearbox maps to kick in when better conditions return ( april?) Seems to take a lot of welly for ages before it decides to hold a gear longer. Kickdown is still fantastic but not always advisable in everyday driving..... regards edhinho

POST 2Original post

The Tiptronic gearbox has FIVE dynamic modes. Ie they self-select depending on conditions. The box will have a cold/winter setting that is slower to change between gears and moves up the gearbox earlier (with be in a higher gear than normal for a set speed). These are either mechanical sympathy interlocks or in the case of higher gear torque reduction, keeping you out of trouble. The problem is, until the car detects a higher starting temp or has an extended run, it will maintain the winter setting or similar (ie at the opposite end of the spectrum to the sporty settings). The system is analysing average usage patterns the whole time, so it will revert to sporty when it is ready. You could always prompt a re-learn of the gearbox DME by disconnecting the battery for an extended period of time (30 mins, possibly less) to reset the memory (don't forget to put the key in the ignition to position 1 to avoid alarm deafness). But at the moment that would be pointless as the car will sense from scratch it is still bloody cold and start in winter mode again!

POST 3Original post

well you could just slip it into manual mode and wait for the car to try to kill you as mine did near gatwick a few days ago hehe i thought it would be a good idea to hold it in a lower gear (3rd) as we edged along but when you loose traction things get interesting in the snow but the look on the face of the guy in the car next to me i was overtaking was priceless as the wheels span up and i passed him while gently tankslapping down the road! dont wish for too much too soon
