I picked my car up Wednesday from the dealer after leaving it last Friday for new shift cables to be installed. I was hoping Porsche would cover them under warranty, but they denied my claim since I had an aftermarket SSK installed. The left cable kept popping off the fitting on the transaxle, and when the mechanic started taking the old cables off, he could hardly get the right one to come off, had to use a big long pry bar and lots of muscle. Porsche says the aftermarket shifter some way caused the other end of the cable to twist in such a way as it came off the fitting.
I cannot see any way in the world this could happen, but if it is so, then why wasn't the right cable coming off too? I've appealed to their dispute process, but don't have much hope realistically that they will cover this. Has anyone else had this similar problem? I know some have said their cables were replaced but no mention has been made of having an aftermarket SSK.
I seem to remember reading some loose shift cables after plenum installation. Which aftermarket SSK did you go with and were they able to put the cables back on without a problem?

If it makes you feel any better, I had to have mine replaced right after the warranty ran out, and they weren't covered by the extended warranty.
The endlinks snapped on the tranny side. $800 or something like that. On the bright side, it was the first money that I had had to put into the car for repairs ever in the first four years of ownership.
I had the Agency Power unit in there. I first went with a Schnell, and wasn't satisfied with it. I liked the AP unit better, but the tech that did my cable install convinced me the factory was enough better to be worth it, and after getting it I have to agree. It has the feel of a regular transmission shifter, with the return to center feel that neither of the aftermarket units had, and I got a pretty good deal from the dealer, plus no extra labor for installing it. My total was just a few bucks under $800, the cables cost about $250. They won't sell or install just one, have to do the pair. I won't say they went in without a problem, they were a lot of work to install, as they run down the transmission tunnel, up the back firewall, over the engine, and down to the transaxle. Some of the attaching points were pretty hard to get to, I was watching the tech do some of the work.
All that said, I still in no way can see how the AP SSK unit caused the linkage to keep popping off.
That is where they always break, nice job by Porsche ducking the warranty for a part known to fail just becuase you had an aftermarket shifter.... Pretty weak on their behalf.
On our own Cayman, with stock shifter, we had a cable let go at 22,000 miles. Most dealer have the cables in stock and that tells you something....
