Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Given that you can run an iPod off of a CDR-22, I figured you could with a PCM and an aftermarket interface (pick your favorite).

The Cayenne uses PCM 2.0 for the first gen, then 2.1 then 3.0 and so on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi gang,
I'm interested in retrofitting a PCM into my 2003 Turbo. I'd like to have Nav and iPod in a factory form factor (call me crazy), and am wondering how/if anyone has done it.
Would the units from a Cayenne work, or just the 996 variants? I've tried searching, but it's either really straightforward, or no one has seemed to do it.
Thanks,
The 996 uses PCM 1.0. There's no version of this PCM that supports iPod integration. The Cayenne uses PCM 2.0 for the first gen, then 2.1 then 3.0 and so on. You'd need a newer unit - I believe 2009+ in order to get the features that you want. If this is even possible, it would be horrendously expensive.
I went the aftermarket route with a Kenwood and Focal system, and I couldn't be happier. Have you considered that?
I thought that the PCM 1's were for pre MOST cars, and the 2's + were for the fiber backbones?
I've never seen an aftermarket head unit that I thought looked stock enough in our cars. Given that you can run an iPod off of a CDR-22, I figured you could with a PCM and an aftermarket interface (pick your favorite).
You may be right about an aftermarket iPod solution, but it's certainly not as elegant as a system designed for iPods. You're right about PCM 1.0 being for pre-MOST cars. I think the 2.0 unit may be used on 2003+ cars. Either way, it's hopelessly outdated. We have the PCM 2.0 system in our Cayenne and it's not especially good.
If my car was a collector or show car, then I would keep it original. Since mine is a daily driver, I decided to upgrade to a Kenwood unit that has bluetooth, modern nav, iPod connectivity, voice control, etc. I'm pleased with the decision and if you get a good installer, they can make it look pretty darn good.
Why? A current double DIN system will be light years ahead of what you are considering. And while it may not be factory the look can be very good.

I'm also thinking of having the PCM changed (when I get my 996 later this year, T-2 1/2 months now) and found that a certain UK manufacture of Double DIN head units also supply the rim around the actual product specifically for 996's.
+++ Double Din. Are you kidding me? The rate of change of technology needs to be considered. I was very happy I didn't have to yank out an expensive PCM system, and it took until 2011 until the aftermarket units were good enough to be worth ripping out the Bose.
