Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

once replaced, there is no guarantee it's not going to leak either if you have a garage queen.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been dreading this but at 81,000kms my car will finally need a major service.
1) An electrical gremlin has reared its ugly head. Central locking system and all the interior lights are dead, as is the alarm. Not sure if it's just off because the central locking is off or if it's also pooched in its own rite. All the fuses are good so where do I go from here? Is there a relay somewhere I should be looking at?
2) Differential is noisy on deceleration..that thing's probably got to be replaced. What's the general consensus these days on where to shop? OEM vs. Guard vs. Kaaz vs. Carbonetics
3) Clutch is seriously slipping now. Now that the 996's are pretty old...any long-term opinions from people who've done the LWFW?
4) "While I'm In There" - I've not really been actively scanning the 996 forum for almost 2 years now. Is the RMS issue permanently solved? Now there's an IMS issue that's come up? If my motor's never leaked...do i need to bother addressing either seal?
Appreciate the input. Cheers
i'd leave the rms alone since nothing has leaked.
perhaps the car incorrectly goes into sleep mode and that's why central locking and interior lights are out? just a thought.
noisy differential can mean fluid is low. do a fluid drain first to see if it needs to be rebuilt.
There are plenty of threads here on what else to do if you have engine out for clutch. Just because rms didn't leak doesn't mean there aren't ims bearing wear. If you are doing clutch anyway and plan to keep car for a few years why not do ims, new rms seal, plugs if almost due, aos, water pump( although not strictly related), polybelt (cheap) and oil pressure sender ... new transmission fluid and then you should be set. For a while hopefully ... if you are going to trade the car ..perhaps clutch only ...
the truth about rms is that they leak if the car sits. once replaced, there is no guarantee it's not going to leak either if you have a garage queen. if it hasn't leaked about all these years, you are more safe to leave it then to replace it.
If you're going to do the clutch, a new rear main seal will add about $40 to the job. No brainer.
I did a bunch of preventative service about two years ago (I'd already done the IMS bearing retrofit). The main items for me were the water pump and, surprisingly, a bunch of coolant hoses that had gone soft with age. Did it all, figuring I'd get years more out of the car. Predictably, of course, it's now for sale. My wife tells me that investing a wheelbarrow full of money in a car is how she knows I'm about to get tired of it. Thus, she never asks me to send her to a spa
Just had mine back from having work done.......I did: Clutch/Flywheel/Throwout bearing/Slave cylinder/IMS Bearing/RMS/AOS. All work done by Dealership. Dealership cost = $3900 + $600 for the IMS (they fitted it at no labor charge)......$4500. Car has done 80k miles. No idea if I'll sell it anytime soon but I feel I now have peace of mind, I hope..:-)
IMHO, doing the clutch and not doing the IMS and RMS, is well, silly!
While ordering parts to do my major service I got coil packs 'just in case' while changing the plugs, coils were fine so if you need some let ,e know, I got 6 of 'em from pelican
I agree with most, if keeping the car and doing the clutch might as well do ims, rms, flywheel while yer in there.
