The left rear wheel looks like it has been repaired from a minor accident along with a sloppy touch up paint job of the left rear bumper gash.

Yesterday we test drove this car at a local used car dealer.

Also, have the facility doing the PPI use a paint gauge on all the panels, especially since you suspect body work.

Prices seem to have gone up some since then and will be higher at a dealer but if PPI is clean I would try to get them down to 19-20K.

I'm helping a good friend buy his 1st 911. Yesterday we test drove this car at a local used car dealer. It is difficult to tell from the dealership pics but the front end looks like it has been pebble blasted (likely from track use). The left rear wheel looks like it has been repaired from a minor accident along with a sloppy touch up paint job of the left rear bumper gash.
The carbon interior package has held up well except for the drivers entry guard that needs replacing d/t significant delamination that looks awful. Otherwise the interior is in fair to good condition for it's age.
Pretty sure the car hasn't had the IMS fix. The car drives well. Has new but inexpensive Khumo tires. Calipers and pads look relatively new.
My buddy is OK with the cosmetic issues if he gets a decent price as he would be willing to recondition it himself as a project.

There are not many 996's for sale in my area to compare. Any help with an appropriate target price range for this vehicles worth would be greatly appreciated!
That car has lots of nice factory options. The factory aero kit, wheels and carbon fiber are very desirable options. It also has full-leather interior and Litronic headlights - again, very desirable.
If the car passess PPI, CarFax, etc., then I'd say the the asking price isn't really too bad. I think he can negotiate a bit and see if he can get them to come down, but it's not outrageously priced.
Service records will assist in the valuation of the 996. I would certainly recommend a PPI by a QUALIFIED facility? If the facility doesn't know Porsche's, find one that does. Also, have the facility doing the PPI use a paint gauge on all the panels, especially since you suspect body work. The options do carry value over other 996's, however if your friend has interest in the car I would not start negotiations in the 20's.
As a point of reference my car is a 2001 C4 with nice options, no aero kit but close to perfect condition with 62K miles. I bought it 8 months ago for $22,500 private sale. Prices seem to have gone up some since then and will be higher at a dealer but if PPI is clean I would try to get them down to 19-20K. Good luck.
Have you run a carfax to see history of service or accident? Price is not bad but it looks like stock suspension and potential clutch work with that mileage. You may need to factor that into your purchase price.
The heavy options definitely are a selling point!
They said they don't have service records but he definitely will get a PPI. Good point about paint gauge. I'll be sure to have him ask specifically for this to be done if it isn't part of a typical PPI.
Thank you for an idea of price on a near perfect condition car. This car's black paint has definitely had a rough life in terms of the front bumper and the aero pieces on the rocker panels. The wheels also have a bit of curb rash that effect the value and will be used as a negotiating point.
The carfax is clean except for a "wheel repair". That wheel repair was likely why I saw the mild left rear bumper damage. It appears to me to have been a relatively minor incident but we'll see what the professionals think after the PPI. I didn't think about the clutch. Will have him ask the PPI shop for a quote on a clutch replacement to get an idea of cost in case it goes soon.

It is very helpful to get your opinions on price and things to look out for. He plans to make an offer on the car this week contingent on no surprises found in the PPI and the understanding that he will likely need to drop about $1000 (rough price I heard from a friend in the PCA for a 1999 motor) for an IMS upgrade for peace of mind.
He likes the fact that this is a local car and easier to arrange PPI as well as having an old camaro he may trade in at the time of the deal. He is OK with the condition issues as long as the PPI doesn't reveal some major accident repair and he can get a fair price for it.
Seems reasonable with a clean title, carfax, PPI check and verification of maintenance.
For some perspective, I just put an Aero kit on mine for about $5k, which was actually very low price for the work using factory parts. I think these Mk1 Aero kit cars will hold some "classic" appeal as they are the same body kit as the original 996 GT3 in Europe and the "Taco Wing" is well-liked, even by some older 911, "snobs."
Bought mine last August for a 26K and change. I have guys offering me 30K currently to let it go. No joking.....I have a 01 996 aero kit, litronics, full leather, power/heat seats and 28K miles. Same colors!
Upgraded IMS...new RMS....fister exhaust....drop in filter....I'm in it for 28K and change.
