Reported cause
It turned out that the cam adjuster was stuck open so while I was there I had them flash it with te GIAC tune.
Leading evidence: 'cam adjuster was stuck open' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cam adjuster was stuck open' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). I replaced about everything on this engine and car itself so I know with out a worry about it.

I do feel that the resistors need replaced bc when I kick the a/c on the high speeds come on but the low speeds or high speeds will come on without the a/c on.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After that didn't fix we tore the engine down to the case.
This is from a local board called C&C in NJ
"Well, when I say I used it as a daily driver, I mean it. My 1999 911 has 178,000 miles on it. For the most part it's been very reliable except for a little nagging issue of spontaneous engine combustion.
The first engine died with 95000 miles. Something about ring wear (Porsche doesn't really tell you what's wrong). That was replaced under warrantee, so it wasn't a hit to my pocketbook. Now, the second engine bit the dust with about 85000 miles on it. "Intermix" is the problem. I.e. oil in the coolant indicating a crack somewhere, probably the heads. Porsche's answer: replace the engine. They answer this so fast to so many problems, it's a bit crazy. The dealer said they don't even need to look at the car. I described the intermix problem over the phone, and the guy said I need a new engine. Case closed.
With a car worth $10k to $12k on a good day with all the stars aligned, and $8k plus to install a new engine, the math just doesn't add up. The car's worth more in parts. So to a breaker it will go.
Unless there's someone out there just itching for a dead 911

Anew engine (remanufactured) at the dealer is going to be closer to $20,000 than $8,000. Here is a chance for someone who wants a dead car or wants to rebuild the engine.
He just listed it on ebay and he's a member over on RT.org...

If it wasn't such high miles I would consider snapping it up and fixing it. But I wouldn't be looking at a huge profit, maybe 1-2k after repairs and flipping it.
Edit: holy crap $10k blue book for a car with good engine and that many miles. Wow.
Ok, staaaaay away. Unless you need a donor car or want to part it out.
trouble with intermix is it could be head replacement (less expensive) or block replacement (more expensive)
Real...what's real... I live in a land of make believe. to me all you guys are real..... who knows
Will do buddys B)
The mods I've ordered for it are the following:
Underdrive crank pulley
LWFW
Headers
muffler bypass pipes
front drop links
rear adj control arms
clutchmaster stg3 clutch
solid subframe bushings
solid engine mounts
160 F Tstat
metal water pump
new oil cooler
new coolant tank
new coolant tank cap
It also already had a hardwired passport and m030 suspension on it.
Should be fun driving after she gets fixed. Getting the old cooler pressure tested this week and if that's not the issue its going to the family friends Porsche master mechanic for some free work to find the issue
Bringing this back for an update
My friend and I have been building the car since I recieved it. I purchased the car last Octoberish from Ross. As I was driving it home (knowing and not caring of the intermix) from Newark, NJ the head gave way in Pittsburg, PA blowing the mix all over the road from the coolant overflow. I didn't want to believe that the head was cracked so I tried some other possible fixes. This included the coolant tank with updated cap, AOS, and the oil cooler. After that didn't fix we tore the engine down to the case. Cleaned it completely out and found the 4-6 head majorly cracked.
I then purchased a good used head and added ARP headstuds. I also replaced all the coolant hoses, water pump, low tstat, LN chromoly oil gear shaft, spark plug tubes, spark plugs with densos, screw on oil filter, and all other major gaskets. Filled her with fluids and started right up. After a few moments it developed a misfire so I took it to Wright Motorsports for a coolant flush and to see what the issue was. It turned out that the cam adjuster was stuck open so while I was there I had them flash it with te GIAC tune. To be honest I'm not sure if they flashed it bc I could never tell a difference. She still runs a little hotter than I'd like. So while I was fixing the car I did forget to mention how bad my bite was from the mod bug....lol
This is her before and after:

My next step is taking her down to 2500 lbs and going to a 3.7 or 3.8
Ive never seen the gambella hood before, pretty cool. And since you went mod crazy, why not? I am surprised its still running hot with the 3rd radiator and LT t-stat. Maybe do the hi speed fan hack.
I ran two 8" spal fans on the center to a switch. Also replaced a cracked radiator. I just order all new relays, 5 total, for the hi/low fronts and rear engine one. Fingers crossed. Maybe I'm throwing parts at it but from reading everyone's post it's not a bad thing to keep all my parts new B)
Oh FYI 180k miles one her
Nice job! With intermix, did you flush the entire coolant system? You should not run hot with all of those mods to the coolant system. My car runs as cool as I want it to constantly due to a new water pump and the low temp stat. I have no 3rd radiator or fan mods of any kind.
The needle sets to almost the right edge of the zero on the 180 mark. I feel as if it should stay at the 180 mark. It has been 90+ pretty much every day here in Cincinnati, OH.
That car looks fantastic! Awesome job! I am contemplating a 996 at present, where does your friend work? I am in Cincinnati as well. I will be needing a good mechanic I am sure!
And THIS is why the 996 is the best modern Porsche! Totally modifiable for a lot less than buying new. Nice! And no qualms about "originality." Do whatever makes you happy, without worry.
Mine sits between the 8 & 0 closer to the 0 until I get in traffic, then it creeps to just off the right of 0, when the high speed fans kick on. Then it slowly will go back to around the middle of the 0 and settle there until things open up and we get some airflow.
Make sure that both fans work on high and low speed, Ballast resister may be out?
Did you ever change the water pump? The intermix might have caused some deterioration of the plastic impellers. Impeller breakup is not uncommon.
That's exactly how mine acts. That makes me feel a lot safer lol. I've been very nervous about it heating up to much after all that I have research I have done on the car. It hasn't passed the 0 yet. I replaced about everything on this engine and car itself so I know with out a worry about it. I have just read that people seem to see it stay right at the 180 mark. I do feel that the resistors need replaced bc when I kick the a/c on the high speeds come on but the low speeds or high speeds will come on without the a/c on. Also the engine compartment fan will not kick on either. I just put all new relays in also.
^^ my car acts exactly the same as franks and yours. Totally normal. The engine compartment fan does not kick on very often. IIRC the engine compartment itself has to reach 176F or the coolant temp needs to reach 216F for the engine compartment fan to kick on.
