Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys I am a new 996 owner and the car I bought is an 01 Cab with 42789 miles and is producing a black residue on the bumber. I realize it is coming from the exhaust. What is causing it? Is it serious? Is there an easy fix? Thank you, Brad

POST 2Original post

probably just carbon buildup... use some techron and driver her like you stole her...

POST 4Original post

is it only on one side only right above the tailpipe? Or is it on the whole bumper? I get brake/road/tire "dust" on the rear of mine all of the time.

POST 5Original post

Great color (but your bumperettes deserve to be Guards Red too!)

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 9723643

Yup brake/tire dust- some have attributed to tire wear in direct line with the mufflers - even worse against the yellow paint.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok thank you for the replies. Let me see how it goes with Techron. I don't think it is brake dust as it is just above both exhaust pipes.

POST 10Original post

Carbon buildup+road grim = what you are seeing. Drive & drive!

POST 12Original post

Ive begun to see this on mine as well...and this is after probably 10-12 fill ups w chevron 94 octane w techron (no ethanol). Hoping thats its just me blowing the car bon out with some quality gas cuz who knowshow the po drove it or what they put in it.

POST 13Original post

Dont scare the poor guy.... 1st thing he going to do is search "IMS" on the forums and have a sick stomach. its just carbon or brakedust/road grime. try good gas also i dont know if your state has 93octane but if it doesnt use an additive "chevron fuel additive works great and BMW used the same stuff but at the dealership its in the same cheveron bottle but grey with the bmw logos and 10dollars higher...lol go figure.

POST 14Original post

I doubt the "soot" is coming from the exhaust stream. OBD-II would be kicking a CEL if the engine was running excessively rich. I'm betting my dime on brake dust. relinuca
