I set off to remove the mirror so I could put it in a clamp on my table and glue the crack.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I feel like an absolute moron.... Today after taking the cover off my 99 C2 I noticed somehow the drivers side mirror shell had become cracked on the bottom. I knew I could just get a used shell in good condition off Ebay but I still wanted to see what a good superglue job could do for it. I set off to remove the mirror so I could put it in a clamp on my table and glue the crack. I pulled off the electronic mirror controls and trim to reveal the three bolts holding the mirror on, easy enough. Anyone who has done this will know that two of the bolt heads are sitting in the face of the sheet metal and easy to remove. The third, however, is recessed in between the exterior and interior pieces of metal that make up the door. When I removed this one and pulled it out with my fingers it managed to slip and fall into the door. The three minutes it took to remove the screw turned into three hours of me tearing apart the door, sealant, water shielding, and everything else to gut the door. I used my borescope to search around in the parts of the door I couldn't easy see into to further search for the stupid screw. Finding a screw with the same thread to replace it was never my concern. Hearing the stupid screw rattle in the door would drive me absolutely insane and that was my main reason for putting so much time into finding it. Somehow I never found the screw! It didn't fall into the lower part of the door and it wasn't anywhere I could see or feel. After doing some investigating I think there may be a piece of metal inside the door that sits parallel with the ground right underneath where the opening for the screw is. My guess is this structural piece is acting like a shelf and has my culprit screw sitting on it. From what I could see with the door apart, there is no way to access the top of this structural metal without drilling a hole in the door. I know it's a long shot but maybe one of you has an idea of where my little gremlin screw might be hiding in the door. If not, maybe someone could help me find a replacement screw. I know I can easily go to a department store and match the threads of one of the other two screws but I'd probably have to cut and grind it to the correct length. Mostly I think I just needed to make a rant thread to tell my story so I don't go insane over wasting three hours of my life taking apart my factory assembled 911 door in my driveway. Once I get the replacement mirror in (already ordered) I'll install it and go for a drive. So help me God if I hear that stupid screw ratting in the door I might have to undo the hinge hardware, pull the door off completely, flip it upside down, and shake it until it shows itself. I already shook the door quite a bit to listen for it rolling around in there but didn't hear anything. Swinging it side to side is different than going over bumps though...

POST 2Original post

I have various sized magnets on extension poles (like an old school car radio antennas) that Id try. If it doesnt work out, let us know size of the fastener. I have lots of spare bolts and would be happy to pop one in the mail for you, if I have what you need.

POST 3Original post

1) telescopic magnets are great 2) put your phone is video mode and run it in there to see if you can find it 3) leave the door panel off for a few days and drive around...maybe it will fall to the bottom 4) register for therapy

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the offer cds72911 I'm going to measure the threads, diameter, and length today. I have a few telescopic magnets I tried to cram in there where they could fit. What I didn't try is a magnet on the metal of the door itself to see if I could pick it up through the metal of the door. I'll try the phone camera too, I didn't see it with the borescope camera but a wider angle lens on the phone might help. I'm definitely just going to try driving it once I put the new mirror on and see if I can rattle it to the bottom of the door panel.

POST 5Original post

Maybe it wedged itself in somewhere? I don't see it having anywhere else to go unless by some fortune you didnt have the adjustment cap covers on the bottom part of the door and it fell out!

POST 6Original post

Hi, did you find the bolt size, I need new ones (or does anyone know? Cheers
