I opted to go this route because he resealed the plastic with epoxy,so any material that was sanded off was replaced and lifetime guarantee sounded gd to me

I just used the 3m headlight refinishing kit on mine and it worked awesome..

I also have used a DIY kit and the results were descent but compared to what pictures were posted, mine now looks like #$%^%.

The Turtle Wax kit comes with a life time supply of "clarifying" polish that I use on lots of plastics.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A while a go Dennis C posted some pics of his headlights b4 and after he Dr. Headlight refinish them. They looked so good I looked in my area, but there were no franchises near me. I called the one in new jersey and the owner was good enough to come all the way out here(bout 1.5 hrs each way) Really impressed with the results.
Lifetime warranty. They sand them down buff them the re- apply an epoxy with uv blocker.then wet sanded them and buffed em again. He got her about 1030 am and left about 630pm
Definitely need to do the pumpkins with the artic silver. I need to replace my avatar, but did both the pumpkins and plugs and it looks great. It takes less than 5 mintes.
It was $175, but it was more for him to come all the way out here. I think if your in nj it s 150, not sure though. If you want info pm me. Mine had already been done with a dig kit and were starting to go bad again. I opted to go this route because he resealed the plastic with epoxy,so any material that was sanded off was replaced and lifetime guarantee sounded gd to me
Holy crap! I'm calling my guy now!!!
Unfortunately the closest one to me is about 90 minutes away but I'll see if we can meet somewhere. Impressive results and the lifetime warranty makes it all worth the price.
Yes all day he got here about 1030am(I live in Milford) he did all the sanding by hand. Was 3-4 different grits. Shot the epoxy and had to wait about an hr to set up then wet sanded twice and buffed and waxed. He said normally he comes back the next day to wet sand but I was so far away decided to wait it out.
This guy was really meticulous, was really hot here yesterday so had some orange peel. He charged me $175 but I gave $200 because his attention to detail was awesome. I know sounds like an ad but I couldnt be happier with the job he did.
He was the owner of the franchise, and took the results personally. Also I think maybe he didn't realize how far of a ride it was to where I am. Either way I'm more than satisfied with the results.
This is an excellent post with a real time solution and cost savings, as compared to buying new. I have the same issue with my C4S and this is a good solution for me. I'm going to search for a dealer in the S. California marketplace. Thanks for sharing.
Not to steal any thunder from the results of this, but 3M carries a kit that you can do this on your own.I think you may only be able to clean and polish them. I don't think you get the epoxy and such, but I have done this before with the 3m kit and it turns out great. You just need to apply a UV protectant that is good for plastic after to protect them. Kit number is 39014, but you can get professional kits also.
Mine had been done with a diy kit and looked ok when I bought the car,but they were starting to turn yellow again. More than anything I wanted the guarantee
I also have used a DIY kit and the results were descent but compared to what pictures were posted, mine now looks like #$%^%. I was planning on buying new lights, so this is a more economical way to go.
I just used the 3m headlight refinishing kit on mine and it worked awesome.. its pretty cheap to i think it was 30 bucks. if you get this one i would recommend getting 2 .. 1 for each headlight
I found a homemade recipe for headlight sealant in the Autogeek detailing forums. It is 50% mineral spirits and 50% Helmsman Spar Urethane (clear gloss). You mix it up and then wipe onto the headlight (after polishing) with a blue paper shop towel.
I did this on a "guinea pig" BMW 3 series about 6 months ago, and it is still holding up quite well. Others online report that 2 years later it is still doing fine.
I searched and found a 3M kit on-line that uses a similar process like the Dr. Headlight process and I'm going to give it a try. Their process requires a high speed buffing process, with multi grades of fine grit, water based sand paper. They finish it if with a sealer type finisher as well. I'm game to see what it does. I'll post a thread about the process and outcome when I'm done.
Thanks for the tips and heads up.
Again... the sanding and polishing is the easy part. Any of the kits will do a decent job restoring the color and clarity--and total removal of the clear coat. The Turtle Wax kit comes with a life time supply of "clarifying" polish that I use on lots of plastics.
After polishing your lenses (no clear coat) they will turn yellow and haze in 2-3w, they will look worse than before polishing since you just sanded off any remaining clear coat. Replacing the clear coat is the real issue. The clear coat that came with the Turtle Wax kit lasted 2-3 months before I could see degradation. Not good.
j beede - I understand you're making your statements based on experience, so I respect them. Then what are my options, other than replacing the headlight assembly? Dr. Headlights seemed like the logical option but with no dealer in my area to offer services, that option has gone to the wind. And, I'm not really comfortable with shipping my lens across the county to have someone restore them. What are the replacement costs? Has anyone priced them recently, or done the replacement option?
Dr Headlight is only one of many different kinds of companies that do this sort of work. Just do a search on your local Google pages or even ask a body shop who they would use. The important thing is to make sure whoever does the work applies the clearcoat to it.
Sounds interesting... I will check out the Krylon and may try it on my Nissan "transportation appliance". Since I polish my lenses every couple of months--I have no issue with trying just about anything on them
I have not tried any aerosol product due to concerns with overspray. I'll just use more masking than usual.
When I bought my car, the headlights were almost as bad as the headlights in the first post of this thread.
I bought the $25 restoration kit made by 3M at my local parts store and then went to town. It took about an hour per headlight, but they looked like new when I was done.
Not to be a downer... I think that they offer a good service. However, I think mine need to be done again. They are showing some wear and some discoloration since they did them before. I may have to take them up on their lifetime warranty...
Here in Florida we suffer the same problem! But I used the 3M kit in one of my cars and work just as great the $175 job!
Plus I love to do this jobs by myself!
