Had clutch replaced before I purchsed it with ~55k on it, now has 107k
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I responded even though I no longer own the car. The guy I sold it to 25 months ago came by at work on Friday and said the car has 64K miles on it. Issue free except airbag light is on.
Well I have a 2004, but I have 133,000 miles on it. The best 133,000 miles I've ever driven.
My 2001 C4 had about 65,000.
Neither has had any engine failures. <knocks wood>
Doug, are you the original owner ? Just curious, when it was repalced. Mine has 80K now and is on its second motor as well (I can tell my the serial number on the engine). Don't know when it was replaced though, although I suspect after 32K miles as there was a major service logged then.

Replaced:
Coolant tank
Tranny
Water pump
Coil pacs
Had clutch replaced before I purchsed it with ~55k on it, now has 107k
That's about it.
85,000 miles & 25 Track days
Owned since 68,000mi
Apart from consumables the only unintended repair work has been: 1 Rad, 1 AC condenser, 1 Coil pack, 1 Wheel speed sensor.
Electively I replaced clutch/IMS/AOS/RMS (which were all fine at the time), 17K on my LNE IMS now.
122K on my 2000 C4 Tip Cab. Two water pumps@ 80k and 112K, AOS @ 122K, now looking at intermix issues. Great car all around despite my recent trouble. I will probably throw a rebuilt engine in it, freshen the suspension and go for another 120k... Incidentally, the car runs great- no symptoms other than oil in the coolant.
113k on it when purchased a year ago, currently 116k on it. Previous owner had new alternator, battery, brakes, rotors, tires installed and at porsche dealership then traded it in at a later date. New clutch kit installed just prior to my purchase. Everything was fresh when i got my hands on it, full service records from date of delivery to original owner in hand and always at same dealership (the guy was Good) I've put new fuel filter, coil packs, plugs, tubes and o-rings, oil/filter change. Loving the find and loving even more my ownership.
46859 total, 26228 street and the last 20631 all track. 3558 on the current rebuild after failed crankshaft. Putting as many track miles on as I can to get the ROI somewhere near reality or see how long it will last. Going to start PCA Club Racing in GT3-S in 2 weeks at BIR.
55K miles with about 140 hard track days. I've changed the springs and revalved the shocks (by Bilstein) to match the sprints (700/900), added custom roll bar, removed all rubber, solid motor mounts, dog bones, cup shift cables, LWFW, wheel studs for faster/easier tire changes and other similar things. I changed the clutch at 35K not because there was anything wrong with it, but I figured I might as well do it then as long as the engine was out to have the cam lifters replaced. Replacing the cam lifters was the ONLY repair I had done.
I had the LSD rebuilt using Guard plates at 35K and its been fantastic. The perfect track car. I've loved it from day one through today. Love the looks and the sound at full song. Pretty much bullet proof.
My plan was to gut it, add a cage and make it a full race car, but I wound up buying a GTB1 (Koni) instead. So this is now a very stiff DD.. But I still love it
porsche had replaced the engine with the previous owner, which he paid for. I, myself, did the head along with a lot of other maintance while it was torn apart. This is the car the day before I put it in the body shop. Still waiting to get it back.
2000 C2 AS Coup: 139.6k kms or 86.7k miles
At 133.7k km or 83k mi, replaced clutch, flywheel, RMS, engine drive belt, brakes rotors/pads. Didn't know then about IMS issue ... fully briefed now!
H&R lowered suspension & engine purrs nicely.
If it reaches my 1990 VW Jetta GTX's 305.8k km (190k mi) some day, I would be very happy, indeed!

MY 2000 3.4 has 56,000. I have owned it for 8 years.
Replaced a failed coolant tank, water pump, front disks, ignition switch.
Replaced prior to failure a clutch, RMS, IMS and switched to a single mass LWFW at 52,000.
Added Fabspeed intake and cat back exhaust so I can hear whats going on back there.
Lovin' every mile.
So far 39 have responded by posting details and of those 39, five indicate a new engine was installed. If everyone would post details that would give us some good data on how many or what % have actually needed new engines. Some of the cars are heavily tracked so have to take that into account.
I count 8, so far.
98k miles. Only one engine failure
80K Miles . replacement at about 35K
103K on the chassis and 30K on crate motor
120k or so but the engine has 1k maybe.
122K on my 2000 C4 Tip Cab intermix issue
180xxx miles engine replaced at 100k by Porsche
157,895 miles and counting. (2nd engine, though.)
46859 total, 26228 street and the last 20631 all track. 3558 on the current rebuild after failed crankshaft
I missed your comment for one. The 122k who was looking at the intermix issue did not say he replaced the motor yet if I read it correctly and I was not counting the one that had 20621 all track miles so I guess it was 6 using that criteria. BTW thanks for starting this great thread.
1999 C2 127K
Original engine was replaced. Has the factory replacement engine designation "AT" " I do not know when the engine was replaced.
Engine Serial # Original M96/01 66W08106 / current M96/01 AT66X65750
No oil leaks, runs great, replaced all spark plug tube seals when one started to leak about 2500 miles ago.
2001 C2 with approx 60k miles (94,000 km) with the original motor. I am the original owner. Car has approximately 12k track miles. I have replaced a MAF, coil packs, had the RMS replaced and installed the LN IMS.
For longevity, I had the 3rd rad, LN low temp thermostat and X51 oil pan installed. The cooling modifications have made a big difference on the track and in traffic.
1999 C2, 81K miles on original engine.
Replaced IMS (LN), RMS, AOS, clutch and several seals when purchased in 4/12 with 79K miles.
I am the 4th owner and loving my first PCar!
MkII 2003 C2, 42k miles on original engine
RMS changed twice by previous owner around 12k miles.
Windows regulator changed by previous owner
Catalytic converter failed twice, first replaced under warranty, then switched to high-flow cat
Failed light switch and key switch at 38k
Car has been flawless so far. knock on wood.
137,000 miles and increasing rapidly, as this is my daily driver.
Original engine.
Replaced clutch, RMS, and IMS (for the LN Engineering version) at 110,000 miles
Transmission coming out this weekend to replace the three bearings in there.
replaced AOS
replaced water pump
Coolant tank (before I got it 100,000 miles ago)
replaced coil packs
replaced engine mounts
replaced alternator
Overall, it's been a VERY reliable car for me. Happy as can be with it.
I have a 2003 C2 Coupe. 16,xxx miles, original engine, only have had to replace the driver window motor and a few rubber bits. The car saw very little driving until I was allowed to take it.
How's that?
Most of these cars were purchased by their original owners to be used as weekend, good weather fun cars, and as such, they were not driven much in their first five years or so. Most of us are second, third, fourth owners who drive these cars more regularly, so the cars are finally beginning to build mileage. These cars are anywhere from eleven to fourteen years old now and most still have their original engines and run as if they were new. Yes, they've had parts replaced over the years, but most of those parts are considered age or wear limited anyway - items such as the alternators, coil packs, air/oil separators, clutches. The IMS bearings and Rear Main Seals are known weak areas, so most - if not all - of us replace those two items with upgraded versions as the clutch comes out for normal replacement.
My 137,000 mile car with its original engine still pulls like a freight train, starts immediately, passes smog every year with flying colors, gets great mileage, and feels as smooth as a turbine.
In my opinion, these cars are generally quite robust.
My 99 C2 has 72,000 miles. Original engine. Replaced clutch and did IMS bearing upgrade at 70,000 miles. Original double row IMS bearing was failing. I was very lucky to have replaced it when I replaced the clutch. If you have not done it then you're driving on borrowed time! My mechanic, Karl Troy, at European Road & Racing in North Charleston kept my bearing to show to his other 996 & 997 owners. My clutch, AOS replacement, IMS upgrade and oil change ran about $3500.00 all together. I just had to replace my water pump this week.
Original engine .. po did clutch and rms at 30k. Coolant tank done under warranty. Radio failed and window regulator; oil pressure sender... that's about it ....not bad for 10 years ....tell me about a performance car that is better than this? How many engine failures versus original on mk2's up to 100k ?
Interesting dip at 85,000 - 100,000. Just a theory, but this period is normally when the clutch goes. Owners that took advantage of this service and had the IMS / RMS / AOS done at the same time make it to 100,000 ++. !
