Reported cause
After the dynorun clutch is pressed and dyno measures the drag that is caused by the powertrain.
Leading evidence: 'powertrain' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'powertrain' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check but maybe not' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

We disconnected the front drivetrain in order to measure only the rear wheel power.

I did mock up a 90mm and the car ran off idle, but with no AFR guages I didnt let it run long.

These are all just guesses and quoting figuresl, of course the type of dyno used makes a difference.

As for the valves, I assume the the valve clearance may need to be checked but maybe not.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

fellas.... I'm picking the car up this afternoon.
4 months has past since car was towed to my mechanic. I'm psyched to say the least.
....reviews coming soon.
Ok, drove home about 30 miles from the shop, mostly highway miles. The car sounded great. I didn't go over 4000 rpm which is were the torque really starts but my impression is that the car is running really well. She shifts smooth and the power seemed very linear and elastic, which is how the car felt when I first bought it. Motor has about 100 miles so far. I'll put some more on her tomorrow. I need to get the motor broken in so I can get back to the track.
Engine is a 2002 3.6 upgraded to X51 then upgraded to 3.8 by Flat 6. Its running the cable TB. The VCAM+ is triggered by RPM switches that bypass the ECU. Either full on or off. Its a dedicated track car so inbetween doesnt really matter. Protomotive did the ECU tuning. Rev limiter is at 7500 and its a blast at the track.
I just received the dynojet readings from Friday. We only did 3 pulls but the numbers were rather good considering the motor has yet to be fully broken in. We disconnected the front drivetrain in order to measure only the rear wheel power. I will post the readout tomorrow as I don't have a scanner at home. 3 runs yielded 319,325,327 rwhp. Torque was rather strong at 292,298,298 ft. Lbs at the rear wheels. Once the motor reaches 1500 miles I will bring it for service which will include a valve adjustment if necessary and an oil change. At that time I will dyno the car again to see if the readings have improved.
I'm seriously considering removing the awd system. I'm tracking the car frequently and would like to install an LSD.
More updates to come as I get reacquainted...
Just stepped out of the car after a quick blast on and off the highway. 2nd gear is explosive. Way stronger than i remember. The car pulls really well with no hiccups from what I can tell. I ran it to 4500 or so in 2nd and 3rd and Im starting get impressed. I cant wait to see what 4500-7000 rpm has in store.
I should have some pictures of the build coming tomorrow as well. Tuners documented the assembly and im waiting on all the photos to be emailed.
Logray, I have not. Been looking for a larger TB but haven't come up with a solution yet. I did mock up a 90mm and the car ran off idle, but with no AFR guages I didnt let it run long. Would like to chuck the whole intake and go with a high butterfly, but thats another whole can of worms.
Ltusler,
My old 99 was setup exactly the same way except that is was a standard 3.6. Todd even did the ECU, same rev limiter.
The one/off switch wasn't bad on the street. Mine had a delay from bank 1 to bank2 to soften it. Fun car, miss it.
Don't want to hijack Carey's thread. Maybe we need a 996 3.8 subgroup?
Carey, keep the RPM's up! I had mine at Road Atlanta after a couple of hundred miles on Jakes dyno and a oil change. Just don't hit the limiter or keep it revved to high for sustained periods. Over 3k track miles on mine and it just keeps getting better.
Great news !
I can't wait to see the pictures documenting the build !
Can you elaborate about that valve adjustment thing ? I did not know valves had anything that can be adjusted
That sounds sweet Carey. I am in your camp with removing the AWD parts if you won't see wet/snow weather much. You can always retorfit it. The steering is more communicative this way. My TT has its AWD removed and I like it a lot.
Great Post! And what a great opportunity the big bore build offers. With every year and mod that passes I can see how I too might end up at Mr. Raby's place. Something to be said for building your own unique Porsche.
Hey Phil, where have you been mate? When is your next event? I was shooting for Chin on 17th but not sure if Ill be ready so soon. As for the valves, I assume the the valve clearance may need to be checked but maybe not. We can always put them in the valve stretcher if needed...
Seriously, the car is running really strong. I cant wait to really open it up at the track....
Something like this ????
Carrera 2= -12%
Carrera 4= -17%
Tiptronic= -2%
So if he decoupled and I'm assuming manual?, 327 works out to 366 at the flywheel.
Yep think it's finally sorted, old flywheel was toast, rattling/shuddering... new FW is in and working much better/smoother. It looks like just one more issue to sort out with the idle valve.
My 3.4 c2 man. had about 17% loss. 255 on the wheels and calculated 300 on the flw.
That 12% seem's optimistic
So flw hp in Hardback's car is some where between 366 and 382.
And the torque that the 3.8 make's, must be fun car to drive
LN rebored my 3.6 to a 3.8. They also supply JE pistons and rings with each cylinder upgrade. Go to LNengineering.com, they have plenty of info and explanations on their site. My motor was damaged by a valve seat which resulted in a cracked cylinder. This is why I upgraded.
Yes but you also have the same old tired pistons and cylinders and only a partially rebuilt motor.
Carey's engine is pretty much brand new, cylinders, pistons, and all... I'm betting it's closer to a 12-13% number, or at least maybe once the rings are fully seated.
I think that we are talking about diffrent thing's.
Dyno measures the powerloss that the trasmission and rest of the powertrain causes. It has nothing to do with the engine.
After the dynorun clutch is pressed and dyno measures the drag that is caused by the powertrain. After this flw hp is calculated.
Lot's of different thing's affect's this, tyres, tyrepressure, etc...
sorry OT
Yes I think you are right, we are coming up with the same figures so I think we are saying the same thing, just coming about it in different ways.
Your taking the at the wheels and working backwards (which is how it is actually measured).
I'm quoting average drivetrain loss (negative percent) to calculate FW hp. So flywheel incl condition/running of the engine (compression, etc.) then subtract a percent for drivetrain, tires, etc, etc, etc. These are all just guesses and quoting figuresl, of course the type of dyno used makes a difference.
Carrera 2= subtract 12-14% (new, well tuned/good compression)
Carrera 2= subtract 15-17% (tired, poor tune/poor compression)
Carrera 4= subtract addtl 4-6% unless FWD decoupled
Tiptronic= subtract addtl 2%
Sean... Yeah, Ive been waiting for them myself. Hopefully Ill have some to post for you guys today or tomorrow.
How is your research coming for LSDs? I emailed Guard but no response yet. I'd like to know if the diff in our cars can be rebuilt or do we need to buy a new LSD? Price for either situation etc.
Hardback did you stay with the same cam shafts?
Thinking of going the same route this winter while my car is still running but going through a 1l a week in oil.
